Bright Futures Joplin pits first responders against each other for a good cause known as Guns & Hoses. This year’s competition takes place on the basketball court and proceeds go to help provide scholarships to the children of fallen Joplin police officers. Tickets are free for children and students of Joplin High School, and adults pay only $5 at the door for this worthy cause.

Chef Anthony brings his class in to whip up a tasty salad

Chef Anthony Fischer brings his class from the Pittsburg High School into the KOAM studio. Chef Anthony’s class is getting ready for a regional competition and live tv served as a great test of his students’ skills. The team put together a fresh and delicious salad with vegetables and a refreshing blueberry vinaigrette dressing. This recipe is quick and easy for anyone to make! The students did an amazing job and you could see the pride on Chef Anthony’s face.

Elite Kansas athlete heads to a national competition

An elite Kansas athlete heads to a national competition. Crystal Bridges gets ready to represent the state of Kansas in the Special Olympics USA Games. The games will take place in Orlando Florida from June 4th to June 12th. Crystal stopped by the KOAM studio to talk about the competition, her love of sports, and her drive to become a better athlete. She also talked about her love of friendship and family. Over 5000 athletes will make their way to the USA Games from across the nation and the Caribbean. The fact that Crystal will represent her state was an obvious and well-deserved source of pride for her. Silence Is Violence event is headed to PSU

The Silence Is Violence event heads to Pittsburg State University on March 26th. This event draws attention to the topic of domestic violence. It will also show attendees how to give and receive help to those experiencing domestic violence.

The event will feature multiple speakers. Doctor James Otter, owner of Japan Karate – Do Genbu Kai, will conduct a self-defense training simulation.

The event starts at 10 am at the Overman Student Center the Pittsburg State University.

Wildcat Wednesday: Aging With Attitude Expo

The Aging With Attitude expo returns to southeast Kansas. It’s designed to promote positive attitudes about aging. Aging With Attitude also educates older Kansans and caregivers on issues that support physical, mental and financial health. Register for the in person option for $15 or view the recorded sessions for $5.

Jasmine Kyle shows off a furry friend

Jasmine Kyle stopped by the KOAM studio with a special friend; Betty, an eight-year-old rescue dog who is up for adoption. Betty is sponsored which means all of her fees have been paid for. The SEK Humane Society is also hosting its annual Egg My Yard event. You can purchase 25 eggs for $25 or 50 eggs for $40. The order deadline is April 8th and your yard will be egged on April 13th between 7 and 8 am. All funds go to benefit the SEK Humane Society.

Jasmine Kyle introduces a furry friend looking for a forever home

Jasmine Kyle from the SEK Humane Society dropped by the KOAM studio with Apollo – one of the many animals up for adoption at the shelter. For those who’d like to help out but are unable to adopt, the shelter always needs volunteers and foster families. Another way to help out is through the Doggie Bag Retail Shop. All proceeds from the Doggie Bag help fund the SEK Humane Society. During her interview with Tawnya Bach, Jasmine announced big news for the Doggie Bag: the grand opening of their new location at 514 North Broadway in Pittsburg. The grand opening takes place this Saturday, March the 12th.

International Showcase heads to Pittsburg State University

Pittsburg State University hosts an International Showcase on March 5th. PSU students Marlon Merida and Claire (Yu-Hsuan Chen) sat down with Michael Hayslip in the KOAM studio to talk about the event. Here are some of the details:

  • The event runs from 5:30 to 8:30 pm
  • Held at the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts
  • Food samples served from 5:30 to 6:45 pm in the lobby and art gallery
  • $1 at the door and food samples are $1 while supplies last
  • Performances start at 7:00 pm

Everyone is invited, not just Pittsburg State University students!
