Joplin Police officer observes smoke coming from a residence; Joplin Fire respond

JOPLIN, Mo. – About 7:15 p.m. Friday evening, December 9, 2022, a Joplin Police officer on patrol noticed smoke coming from a residence at 1925 South Connor. Joplin E-911 alerted the Joplin Fire Dept to respond.

Joplin Fire arrival observed smoke coming from the eaves and roof of the residence.

Joplin Police tell us on scene there was no sign of forced entry.

We never observed visible flames from outside the residence.  Neighbors tell us it is vacant, the owners had fixed the home up for sale and the for sale sign is clearly posted in the front yard.

Liberty Utilities responded to cut electric from the residence. Smoke almost immediately began subsiding.

Joplin Fire will have official information as it becomes available. But for now it appears it was electrical within the walls and ceiling.

Smoke showing, former Holiday Inn Joplin

JOPLIN, Mo. — Just after 4:30 p.m. Friday, December 2 reports of smoke showing from the former Holiday Inn Hotel, 3500 block Hammons Blvd alerted Joplin E-911.

Joplin Fire, Joplin Police, METS ambulance, Newton County Ambulance responded. Redings Mill Fire and MoDOT Emergency Response responded as mutual aid.

On scene we observed smoke visible from different windows of the large, vacant, empty structure.

Joplin Police tell us no one was observed or detained on the property.

We will update this article with more information from Joplin Fire Dept.

No firefighters were injured as they searched the building, opening windows to allow smoke ventilation.

Joplin Fire Dept is hiring 14 new firefighters, they will pay you while they train you

JOPLIN, Mo. – The opening of Station No.7 next year means the Joplin Fire Dept is already down firefighters Joplin Fire Training Chief Dustin Lunow tells us. And they now need 14 additional firefighters to staff the new station. And they need to hire before 2023 begins.

“You have to be older than 18, high school diploma or GED. Previously we were in a position where you had to be a firefighter or certified firefighter and EMT.  Currently we are waiving those requirements,” Chief Lunow tells us.

NEW HIRE FIREFIGHTERS: “The application is open right now. Individuals who are not currently working as firefighters.  You have to be 18, high school diploma or equivalent.  Equal Opportunity Employer, hiring men and women. You can live out of state.  No residency requirements. Previously applicants had to be a certified firefighter or EMT… BUT WE ARE WAIVING THOSE REQUIREMENTS. We are going to be doing a lot of hiring as we look forward to the future with Station No. 7 opening. So we will bring you on, pay you, we will train you, get you certified.  What we need are individuals who are really motivated, who care about their community, and make a difference.”

CURRENTLY A VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER: “A large number of our Joplin Firefighters still volunteer with their original groups.  Myself I volunteer with the Carl Junction Fire Protection District. Many work their full time job here as a Joplin Firefighter and they still volunteer at their local department where they currently live.”

As a Joplin Firefighter I am biased.  But I believe we have the greatest group of people that I’ve ever had the opportunity to work with. We are a very tight-knit group. There is a lot of tradition.  There is a lot of pride and ownership. We have great equipment. And our personnel are second to none. They are the greatest I believe.”

Duplex burns in Carl Junction, frigid high winds

CARL JUNCTION, Mo. — About 1:40 p.m. Friday reports along Fir Road in Carl Junction of a residential structure fire alerted CJFIRE Dept.

Carl Junction Fire, METS ambulance and Carl Junction Police responded.

1008 and 1010 Southgate Circle, two large 3-bed, 2-bath, 2-car garage dwellings.

31° currently and the wind chill makes it feel like 19°.

Almost before CJ Fire arrived mutual aid was requested of Joplin Fire and Webb City Fire.

The large duplex is located on Southgate Circle which runs parallel to Fir Road on the southern edge of the Briarbrook Neighborhood.

Red Cross has been requested to respond to assist the families involved.

Carl Junction Fire Chief Joe Perkins has requested assistance from the Missouri State Fire Marshal for investigation.

One firefighter was treated on the scene for an unknown issue.

Motorcyclist suffers traumatic injuries in crash near Downtown Joplin

JOPLIN, Mo. – About 2 p.m. Thursday, November 17, 2022 reports of a crash involving a motorcycle at 4th and Jackson alerted Joplin Emergency Dispatch.

Joplin Fire Dept, Joplin Police Dept and METS ambulance responded emergency.

Cpl Brett Davis of the Joplin Police Dept tells us on scene, a southbound Chevy Equinox on Jackson Ave collided with a man on a motorcycle traveling east on 4th.

The adult male was transported Priority One to an area hospital suffering traumatic injuries to his lower legs.

The motorcycle operator was wearing a helmet.

Cpl Davis says the Chevy Equinox was driven from the scene.  The driver was not injured.

Nixon’s Towing removed the motorcycle and debris from the crash scene.

SUV overturns in collision with pickup, Duquesne Road

JOPLIN, Mo. — About 2:45 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, November 16, 2022 reports of a two vehicle crash, one overturned, at 32nd and Duquesne Road alerted Joplin Emergency Dispatch.

Joplin Fire Dept, Joplin Police and EMS responded. Duquesne Police Dept responded to assist with traffic.

On the scene we learn from Joplin Police Ofc Hayden Hinkle there were no injuries in either vehicle. No one was transported to a hospital.

Rosenberg Towing removed the overturned Tahoe. And Chuck’s Towing removed the pickup.

The crash and all debris was cleared in less than an hour, about 3:30 p.m.

Tow truck driver, 18, killed in crash on I-44 at Joplin, next of kin notified

JOPLIN, Mo. – Capt William Davis of the Joplin Police Dept releases more details regarding the fatal tow truck crash on Tuesday, November 15, 2022.

“Tuesday about 9:20 am, the Joplin Police Department Emergency Communications Center received report of a a single vehicle rollover crash near Interstate 44 just east of Rangeline Road. Officers with the Joplin Police Department responded to the scene along with the Joplin Fire Department, METS Ambulance Service, Newton County Ambulance District, and MoDOT Emergency Response. Officers located a 2003 Chevrolet tow truck upside down in the ditch near the shoulder of the roadway.”

The driver, Bradley E. Skaggs, age 18 of Lanagan, Missouri, was the only occupant of the vehicle and was ejected during the crash. He did not survive and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Newton County Coroner.

Next of kin has been notified.

Members of the Joplin Police Department Major Crash Team responded to the scene and are still continuing their investigation at this time.

Car strikes rear-end of tractor trailer under Connecticut Ave Bridge

JOPLIN, Mo. — Just before 8 a.m. Monday morning, November 14, 2022 reports on I-44 east near 7.8 mile marker a passenger car and tractor trailer collided alerting Joplin E-911.

Joplin Fire, Joplin Police and METS ambulance responded.

On the scene Joplin Police Traffic Ofc D. Farmer tells us the passenger car struck the rear end of the tractor trailer that was completing the large hill eastbound which peaks near the Connecticut Ave Bridge.

The collision came to rest under the bridge.

Ofc Farmer says one female driver was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Coats Towing removed the car. The tractor trailer was driven from the scene.

The crash was cleared in about an hour.

5-vehicle crash in Joplin; Child suffers life-threatening injuries

JOPLIN, Mo. — About 9:50 a.m. Wednesday, November 9, 2022 reports of a multi-vehicle crash at E 32nd and Connecticut alerted Joplin E-911.

Joplin Fire, Newton County Ambulance, METS ambulance, Joplin Police responded.

On the scene we confirmed it was a 5-vehicle chain reaction crash in the westbound lanes approaching the intersection.

Cpl Sean Higgins tells us seven people were injured. Six with minor injuries. And a minor child suffered life-threatening-injuries.

Metro Towing and Cotrill’s Towing were summoned to remove vehicles. Two vehicles were driven from the scene. Three were towed.

Joplin Police marked the vehicles for crash investigation. The roadway was cleared to all traffic about 11:15 a.m.

Joplin Police Detectives investigate, two dead at residence

JOPLIN, Mo. — Cpl Tim Hudson of the Joplin Police Dept tells us about 9:20 p.m. Monday evening, October 31, 2022 they responded to the 2200 block of Annie Baxter to an unknown trouble.

Upon arrival to the home in question they located two deceased adults.

THE RESIDENCE IS LOCATED IN THE 2200 BLOCK OF SOUTH ANNIE BAXTER IN JOPLIN’S BLENDVILLE NEIGHBORHOOD.

Cpl Hudson says there was a 9-year-old boy at the residence. He is safe.

Witnesses tell police they heard gunfire before authorities arrived.

Detectives of the Joplin Police Dept began arriving just before 10 p.m. as crime scene tape wrapped the house and the street from 22nd and Annie Baxter to 23rd. Tape also blocked the alley behind the residence.
