Rosin up your bow…it’s time for the 25th Carl Junction Bluegrass Festival

Cavanaugh Studyvin from the Carl Junction Chamber of Commerce stops by the studio to talk with Tawnya Bach about Carl Junction’s 25th Bluegrass Festival. This event has become more than a showcase for bluegrass bands and musicians: you can find various arts and crafts projects, explore the history of Carl Junction, food trucks, beer and wine garden, and so much more. And that’s just the day of the festival – it all kicks off with a 5k run/walk on Friday, September 23rd. Here’s all the information you need about the 25th Carl Junction Bluegrass Festival:

September 23rd – 5k Glow Run/Walk

  • Kids 400m fun run takes off at 6 p.m.
  • 5k starts at 6:30 p.m.

“88 Strong Passing It On” event to raise funds for the Christian Heady Foundation

Doug and Leslie Heady lost their son, Christian, in 2021 to stage 4 DSRCT Sarcoma, a rare form of cancer, when he was only 12 years old. Thousands of people came to know of Christian’s journey through social media and now have a chance to support the foundation named in Christian’s memory. The 88 Strong Passing It On event takes place on September 17 to benefit the Christian Heady Foundation, and if you want to take part, here’s the information you’ll need:

Fair Season set to return to Kansas

Will Morris from the K-State Research and Extension District stopped by the KOAM studio to talk to Tawnya Bach about the return of county fair season in Kansas. Four counties have fairs coming up – Crawford, Labette, Montgomery, and Wilson – and all have a variety of classes for entry. Silence Is Violence event is headed to PSU

The Silence Is Violence event heads to Pittsburg State University on March 26th. This event draws attention to the topic of domestic violence. It will also show attendees how to give and receive help to those experiencing domestic violence.

The event will feature multiple speakers. Doctor James Otter, owner of Japan Karate – Do Genbu Kai, will conduct a self-defense training simulation.

The event starts at 10 am at the Overman Student Center the Pittsburg State University.

Wildcat Wednesday: Aging With Attitude Expo

The Aging With Attitude expo returns to southeast Kansas. It’s designed to promote positive attitudes about aging. Aging With Attitude also educates older Kansans and caregivers on issues that support physical, mental and financial health. Register for the in person option for $15 or view the recorded sessions for $5.

The expo takes place April 29th from 9am to 3:30 pm and the expo takes place at Community Christian Church, 1919 Horton St. Fort Scott, Kansas.

 

Jasmine Kyle shows off a furry friend

Jasmine Kyle stopped by the KOAM studio with a special friend; Betty, an eight-year-old rescue dog who is up for adoption. Betty is sponsored which means all of her fees have been paid for. She loves people but would do best in a home with no other pets. If you’re interested in Betty or any other dog or cat who would love to be rescued, contact the SEK Humane Society at the following:

The SEK Humane Society is also hosting its annual Egg My Yard event. You can purchase 25 eggs for $25 or 50 eggs for $40. The order deadline is April 8th and your yard will be egged on April 13th between 7 and 8 am. All funds go to benefit the SEK Humane Society.

Craft Expo On It’s Way To NEO A&M

Jasmine Kyle introduces a furry friend looking for a forever home

Jasmine Kyle from the SEK Humane Society dropped by the KOAM studio with Apollo – one of the many animals up for adoption at the shelter. For those who’d like to help out but are unable to adopt, the shelter always needs volunteers and foster families. Another way to help out is through the Doggie Bag Retail Shop. All proceeds from the Doggie Bag help fund the SEK Humane Society. During her interview with Tawnya Bach, Jasmine announced big news for the Doggie Bag: the grand opening of their new location at 514 North Broadway in Pittsburg. The grand opening takes place this Saturday, March the 12th.

Frontenac Theatre Department talks “The Little Mermaid Jr.”

Frontenac, KS — Disney’s “The Little Mermaid Jr.” is coming to Frontenac Theatre. Seth Harley stops by the studio with Abby Albright who stars as the main character Ariel to talk about what goes into a theatre production.

 

The play is held at Frontenac High School (201 S. Crawford St. in Frontenac). There are three different show times for you to attend:

 

  • Sunday — March 6th, 2:30 PM
  • Monday — March 7th, 7:00 PM
  • Tuesday — March 8th, 7 PM

Tickets are five dollars at the door and exact change is encouraged.

International Showcase heads to Pittsburg State University

Pittsburg State University hosts an International Showcase on March 5th. PSU students Marlon Merida and Claire (Yu-Hsuan Chen) sat down with Michael Hayslip in the KOAM studio to talk about the event. Here are some of the details:

  • The event runs from 5:30 to 8:30 pm
  • Held at the Bicknell Family Center for the Arts
  • Food samples served from 5:30 to 6:45 pm in the lobby and art gallery
  • $1 at the door and food samples are $1 while supplies last
  • Performances start at 7:00 pm

Everyone is invited, not just Pittsburg State University students!
