6th annual Buckles Barrels & BBQ underway in Carthage

CARTHAGE, MO. – A nonprofit organization that helps those with disabilities live at home held its biggest fundraiser of the year.

The 6th annual Buckles Barrels and BBQ is underway in Carthage benefitting On My Own Inc.

The home healthcare service is based in Nevada and serves five counties in Missouri.

This fundraiser will help them buy adaptive equipment for their clients.

More than 380 barrel racers are competing in the three day race.

“The fundraiser that this is it help builds ramps and modifications we help buy shower chairs, wheelchairs and different things like that that people cant afford if they don’t have Medicaid,” said Jennifer Gundy, On My Own Inc. Executive Director.

The Barrel Racing continues Sunday at Lucky J Steakhouse & Arena.

Nevada, MO men make 51 day trip to Mt. Rushmore via horseback

NEVADA, Mo. – Two men take a 51-day trip traveling from Missouri to Mount Rushmore on horseback.

Cris Rodriguez and Forrest Drury left Nevada, Missouri on June 1 and arrived at Mount Rushmore Wednesday July 21 with family and friends waiting. Rodriguez and Drury had help from day one, when a family they met offered them a place to stay after a camping site didn’t work out. Tt continued from there, with each family knowing someone in the next town.

“Everywhere we went, people took care of us,” said Drury.

Rodriguez says, after 51 days of riding horseback, the ground feels good.

Nevada woman charged for trafficking drugs through mail

NEVADA, Mo. – Police seize a mailed package containing meth and arrest a Nevada, Missouri woman.

The Nevada Police Department has been working with the United States Postal Service Investigations and the Department of Homeland Security in a months-long investigation. They suspected someone in the community was trafficking drugs through the mail.

Officers got a search warrant based on information that a delivery of drugs was being made to a home in the 600 block of N. Elm Street on July 8, 2021.

That afternoon, law enforcement executed the search warrant. The Nevada Police Department, Vernon and Bates County Sheriff’s Offices were all involved.

During the search, a Bates County K-9 made a positive alert on the package in question.

Nevada Police seized the contents of the package. There was about 115 grams of suspected methamphetamine. According to the NPD, it has an estimated street value of about $2,000. Officers will send the evidence to the Missouri State Highway Patrol Crime Lab for testing.

They arrested Dawn M. Hopper, 43 of Nevada. The Vernon County Prosecutor’s Office filed a charge of Trafficking Drugs 2nd Degree (Class B Felony) against Hopper. The Vernon County Jail is holding her on a $100,000 cash only bond.

Authorities continue their joint investigation.

‘Pride in the Park’ to be held in Nevada, MO

NEVADA, Mo. – Nevada, Missouri’s Marmaduke park will play host to the first ever Pride in the Park Festival. The event will be Saturday, June 26 from 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

NEVADA, Mo. — On Sunday a group of people in Nevada gathered at Earp park to protest recent lives lost after police encounters. The group wanted to bring attention to this issue to the local community, and says although these deaths did not occur in Missouri, they still hope to being awareness to the local community and spark conversations here.

JOPLIN, Mo. — Saturday evening Joplin for Justice hosted a rally at 7th and Rangeline to bring awareness to the death of Daunte Wright. Wright was the 20 year old man who was fatally shot by a police officer during a traffic stop in a Minneapolis suburb. Joplin for Justice says this local protest was meant to bring awareness to racial injustice in the country and show how Joplin can make changes locally.

Nevada man wanted after stolen vehicle pursuit ends in fire

VERNON COUNTY, Mo. – Authorities search for a Nevada resident suspected of leading a police chase in a stolen vehicle.

On Wednesday, April 7, 2021, the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office got warrants for Joshua Hallam, 38, for resisting arrest and driving while revoked.

On March 1, 2021, law enforcement took a report of a stolen two-tone Chevy Suburban out of Nevada. Deputies later saw the vehicle and tried to make a traffic stop.

“They spotted the vehicle leaving a gas station in Nevada and when they attempted to stop it, it ran from deputies,” said Mosher.

According to the press release, deputies pursued the vehicle into the county southeast of Nevada. Additional units responded to assist. They followed the suspect down Veterans road southeast of Nevada until it came to a dead-end.

Authorities say the vehicle then continued to drive through a field and into the woods where it hit a tree and caught on fire. Hallam then fled on foot from deputies, but due to the vehicle fire, deputies stayed behind.

Authorities are now searching for Hallam and ask that anyone with information regarding his whereabouts contact the Sheriff’s Office at 417-667-6042.

 

Voters pass two school issues in Nevada

NEVADA, Mo. – Voters in Nevada pass a few school issues during the April 6 elections.

Both issues needed a four-sevenths majority to pass.

Nevada RV Prop K.I.D.S

Residents passed a $13.75 million proposal that will increase property taxes to fund school repairs throughout the district.

“Shall the Board of Education of the Nevada R-V School District of Vernon County, Missouri, without an estimated increase in the current debt service property tax levy, borrow money in the amount of Thirteen Million Seven Hundred Fifty Thousand Dollars ($13,750,000) for the purpose of providing funds to repair and replace roofs District-wide with the exception of Benton Elementary School and Bowman Building; to upgrade heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems; to complete improvements to the football stadium; to acquire land for future District expansion; to the extent funds are available, complete other repairs and improvements to the existing facilities of the District; and issue general obligation bonds for the payment thereof”

Nevada, MO voters will see two school bond proposals on the ballot

NEVADA, Mo. – On Tuesday, April 6, Nevada, Missouri voters will decide on two school bond proposals.

One, a nearly $14 million proposal, would fund repairs to several elementary schools and improvements at the high school football stadium. The second, a $12 million proposal would fund the construction of a new elementary school.

That new school would also be partially funded by a $10 million dollar donation.

    • NRMC recently announced that appointments are still available for the COVID-19 vaccination clinic on Tuesday, March 16. It’s at the Nevada Community Center located at 200 N. Ash Street in Nevada.
    • Recently, the State of Missouri announced that beginning March 15, Missourians in Phase 1B – Tier 3 will be eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. This includes those who keep the essential functions of society running, including K-12 educators and school employees; child care providers; grocery store employees; and energy, food, agriculture, and other critical infrastructure workers, among others. Vernon County Route BB bridge to close for replacement

VERNON COUNTY, Mo. – MoDOT will close the Vernon County Route BB bridge over Moore Branch south of Nevada, Missouri during a replacement project. Officials say the bridge will be close for up to 90 days beginning the week of March 22.

Contractor crews will replace the old bridge with a new structure as well as installing new guardrail at the ends of the bridge.

Traffic impacts:

  • All lanes of Route BB CLOSED over Moore Branch for up to 90 days
  • Drivers will be able to access entrances on either side of the bridge, but will not be able to travel through the work zone
  • No signed detour
  • Drivers urged to find alternate routes around work zone
  • Signs and message boards will alert drivers approaching the work zone

This bridge is included in Gov. Mike Parson’s $351 million Focus on Bridges program, which will repair or replace 250 bridges across the state. Route BB Bridge project cost a of $1.9 million.
