COMMERCE, Okla. – According to the Quapaw Nation Marshal Service, marshals, and Commerce police responded to a house fire in Commerce where they found a fatality. JOPLIN, Mo. — It’s become a Thanksgiving tradition for many people, now in the 11th year — the Turkey Trot in Downtown Joplin. PITTSBURG, Kan. – And it wasn’t just Joplin doing the Turkey Trot: a couple who started a running group for all ages and pace hosted their first Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving in Pittsburg. KOAM’s Keri Worthen says the turnout was more than they expected. all participants were excited to show support and gather together on Thanksgiving. From walkers to runners, people pushing strollers and dogs leading the way — the inaugural Pittsburg Turkey Trot was the start of a tradition for many. News To Know: cyclist dies, manufacturing plant fire, bridge delayed and a blood test for cancer

JOPLIN, Mo. – The Joplin police say the cyclist hit by a Newton County sheriff’s deputy’s patrol vehicle has succumbed to his injuries. The accident happened around 2:00 a.m. last Thursday near East 32-nd and South Finley streets in Joplin. Authorities say the deputy’s SUV collided with a motorized bicycle and sent it’s rider, 44-year-old Ryan Hunnell of Joplin, to the hospital. Police announced Hunnell died of his injuries on Sunday. JOPLIN, Mo. – First responders fight a fire at a manufacturing plant on Wednesday. They found flames coming from the Owens Corning complex on State Line Road. Initial reports say there were no injuries. The fire was reported around 1:45 on Wednesday afternoon. As firefighters worked inside the building ceiling, Joplin Fire shot a water cannon onto the roof of that same area. Firefighters had the fire under control in about an hour, however, they continued to work the area for two more hours. If you’d like to read more about this story, click on the link.

JOPLIN, Mo. – The planned closure of the railroad overpass on Range Line in Joplin has been delayed due to construction scheduling issues. It had been scheduled to close this coming Monday to allow contractor crews to demolish the bridge and begin work on a new one. Authorities have not yet announced a new closure date. JOPLIN, M0. – Mercy and Grail, LLC – a health care company whose mission is provide early cancer detection – announced plans to offer a multi-cancer early detection blood test.  Grail’s Galler test uses advanced testing capabilities to detect early cancer signals for more than 50 types of cancer. Mercy says this test is the first of its kind.

News To Know: Authorities discover body, and a home invasion in Nevada

NEVADA, Mo. – Nevada police arrest 45-year-old Jason Clark,  for breaking into a home on Friday, April 22nd, and assaulting a child. Clark left before the police arrived. He has been charged with first-degree burglary, second-degree kidnaping, and abuse or neglect of a child. Click here for more information on this story.

NEWTON COUNTY, Mo. – Authorities in Newton County are digging up property near Seneca as part of a possible homicide investigation. On Tuesday evening investigators were at a property on Crane Drive with heavy equipment for the dig. Sheriff Chris Jennings says the investigation is related to a missing persons case but wouldn’t say who that missing person is. Click here for more information.

NEOSHO, Mo. – Crowder College in Neosho is taking the week to introduce students to different opportunities and culture provided through fine art. One of Tuesday’s events was a raku firing and throwing demonstration. Raku dates back to the 16th century.

JOPLIN, Mo. – Kids at a local shelter now have new playground equipment to play on. Children’s Haven in Joplin provides a temporary home for kids whose families are experiencing a crisis. On Tuesday the non-profit hosted a ribbon-cutting to unveil a new and improved playground and outdoor facilities for the kids to enjoy.

News to Know: Governor Stitt Signs New Law and Baby formula shortages hit local families

 

Oklahoma City, OK — Governor Kevin Stitt signed a bill to allow law enforcement to keep secret audio or video recordings showing an officer dying in the line of duty. The bill Stitt signed was drafted after Tulsa police were required by Oklahoma law to release video of a suspected shooting of two officers, one of whom later died. The bill prohibits the public disclosure of such a video unless a judge determines the public interest outweighed the reason for denial. It also authorizes a deceased officer’s family members to view the audio or video.

 

Joplin, MO — Baby formula may be harder to find for some. A shortage of baby formula, inflation, and product recalls have made it harder for families to find it. The Newton County health department’s WIC program says they’ve been receiving more calls asking what to do if parents cannot find the formula. They advise parents to call the health department with any questions about getting formula or alternatives.  We have more tips about what to do on our website.

 

Joplin, MO — Joplin school district staff members are going to see some pay raises. The Joplin board of education on Tuesday approved an updated agreement with employee’s bargaining units to provide the raises across most positions. Those units — Joplin National Education Association and Joplin Education Support Professionals — have been fighting for pay increases. Pittsburg, KS — Pittsburg police worked on their cardio — for a good cause. As part of the 41-st annual law enforcement torch run — officers ran from the Pittsburg police department to Pitt State’s football field — passing the torch to each other on the way. News to Know: Shooting suspect wanted, Fire near Columbus destroys house

BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. – The Cherokee County sheriff’s office considers the suspect in a Baxter Springs shooting armed and dangerous. They issued an arrest warrant on attempted second-degree murder Monday afternoon for 38-year-old Shawn Houston.  Click here to read the latest information.

COWLEY COUNTY, Kan. – State investigators in Kansas identify a woman killed in a gunfire exchange as 32-year-old Andrea Barrow. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation says she was killed after pulling out a handgun. This happened when deputies attempted to remove Barrow from a vehicle. Two of the deputies recover at home while a third deputy remains hospitalized in good condition. Authorities say the deputies responded to a call about a suspicious vehicle when Barrow pulled out the gun and “gunfire was exchanged”.

VINITA, Okla. – The Oklahoma Bureau of Investigation says a suspect waved a bow and arrow at law enforcement in a “threatening manner” in a Craig county officer-involved shooting. Vinita police officers and Craig county deputies responded to a dispatch about a chunk of concrete on the railroad tracks on 4400 Road at about 7 am. They found tracks in the grass from the railroad to a tractor on nearby property and officers also found Guy Walker going in and out of his house on the same property. BALTIMORE, Md. — Doctor Anthony Fauci is indicating the government is likely to resume use of Johnson and Johnson’s Covid-19 vaccine this week. The Center for Disease Control advisers plan to meet Friday to discuss the pause in the J & J shot after several women suffered rare blood clotting, with one dying. The CDC now says half of all American adults have received at least one Covid vaccine dose.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The prosecution and defense are set to deliver closing arguments today in the Derek Chauvin trial in Minneapolis. Then jurors will decide if Chauvin is guilty of murder for the death of George Floyd last May. During three weeks of testimony, the jury heard from 45 witnesses

NEVADA, Mo. — On Sunday a group of people in Nevada gathered at Earp park to protest recent lives lost after police encounters. The group wanted to bring attention to this issue to the local community, and says although these deaths did not occur in Missouri, they still hope to being awareness to the local community and spark conversations here.

JOPLIN, Mo. — Saturday evening Joplin for Justice hosted a rally at 7th and Rangeline to bring awareness to the death of Daunte Wright. Wright was the 20 year old man who was fatally shot by a police officer during a traffic stop in a Minneapolis suburb. Joplin for Justice says this local protest was meant to bring awareness to racial injustice in the country and show how Joplin can make changes locally.

ATLANTA, Ga – With the U.S. well above 30 million confirmed COVID-19 cases so far, the nation is bracing for what health experts fear could become a fourth wave. New data from the CDC shows the highest number of cases per capita now concentrated in Michigan and parts of the northeast.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The state of Missouri looks to vaccinate up to ten-thousand residents at a “mega” vaccine site in Springfield. It will be held at the Hammond Student Center at Missouri State University. It’s a two-day clinic next Thursday, April 8 and the following Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on both days. The clinic will use the one-dose Johnson and Johnson vaccine. You must register in advance.

MCDONALD COUNTY, Mo. – Authorities in McDonald County, Missouri make a breakthrough in a cold case. For 30 years investigators worked off this rendering as they tried to identify a woman only known as “Grace Doe”. Investigators had been referring to the woman as “Grace” as they tried to uncover her identity because they thought, only through the grace of God would they figure out who she was. Now DNA evidence has revealed who she really is, Shawna Beth Garber. Garber was found dead in 1990 on Oscar Talley Road in McDonald County. Lieutenant Hall with the McDonald County Sheriff’s Office says the case is far from closed.

PITTSBURG, Kan. – A multi-million dollar tax settlement involving Pittsburg native and entrepreneur Gene Bicknell has been overturned by the Kansas Court of Appeals. In a two to three decision, the court ruled that the district court of Crawford County improperly put the burden of proving that Bicknell lived in Kansas on the Kansas Department of Revenue. Bicknell’s legal fight with the state centered on whether he lived in Kansas or Florida when he sold his company, NPC International in 2006.
