News To Know: fatal crash, house fire in Newton County

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Kan. — A 2006 Pontiac G6 traveling northbound on U-69 alternate crossed the center line and struck a 2016 GMS truck traveling southbound. The Pontiac’s driver, Trey Cunningham, was taken to Freeman West with a fatal injury. Next of kin were notified. His passenger, Valeria Lerma, was taken to Mercy in Joplin with a suspected serious injury. The driver of the GMC, Shannon Taft from Baxter Springs, was taken to Freeman West in Joplin with suspected serious injuries.

NEWTON COUNTY, Mo. — About 6:15 a.m. Monday, December 5, a passerby spotted a structure fire just north of Elm Road on State Route E near Diamond alerting Newton County Central Dispatch. The structure appeared to be a former residence, now used for storage. Chief Skosberg said he could see the fire from two miles away easily. JOPLIN, Mo. — Joplin city staff wants to better the city’s homeless situation by conducting a study about what’s working and what isn’t. In the council meeting on Monday, December 5th, the city council asked to approve a study that would use special use tax funds for homeless research. Robin Smith from Homeless Coalition says right now homeless people with animals don’t have places to go because shelters don’t accept animals. Lack of transportation is also an issue.

JOPLIN, Mo. — Joplin could get millions of dollars to help with storm and wastewater improvements. The city is eligible to get more than $12,500,000 in matching state funds to help improve and update nine projects. If Joplin matches dollar for dollar, the city will devote a total of more than $25,000,000 for the projects. News To Know: bodies discovered, murder guilty plea

LABETTE COUNTY, Kan. – The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) and the Labette County Sheriff’s Office open an investigation after finding two bodies in rural Mound Valley, Kansas. On October 3, the Labette County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a subject who discovered the bodies at around 8:30 a.m. Officials say the Labette County Sheriff’s Office then requested KBI assistance at approximately 9:10 a.m. When officers arrived, they located the decomposing bodies of both a male and female. CRAIG COUNTY, Okla. – A Monday morning crash takes the life of a Craig County, Oklahoma man. Authorities say 60-year-old Stephen King of Welch was driving his golf cart out of a private driveway waiting for traffic to clear. When he drove forward, he hit the side of another car which caused him to fall out and get struck by the trailer attached to the car. Authorities pronounced King dead on the scene.

TULSA, Okla. – Tulsa Police identify a 17-year-old shot and killed at a McLain football game Friday night. According to CBS affiliate in Tulsa, News on 6, police identified the victim as Terron Yarbrough. MISSOURI -A Missouri man pleads guilty to the murders of two cattle ranchers. Garland “Joey” Nelson admitted in July of 2019 he had a business dispute with brothers Nicholas and Justin Diemel. The brothers were in town from Wisconsin to collect a $250,000 debt that stemmed from a cattle deal when they went missing. Nelson admitted that he shot and killed the 24 and 35-year-old at his mother’s farm then burned their bodies. He was sentenced to two life terms in prison without parole.

BARTON COUNTY, Mo. — Just before 2:00 Sunday morning, reports of a crash along State Route V near NE 40th alerted Barton County E-911. A Barton County Deputy arrived first, locating the crash about 10 miles northwest of Lamar. Missouri State Highway Patrol were notified. Authorities reported a single vehicle crash with three occupants; the driver, Benjamin Harrington, 18, of Lamar was killed. Click here to read more about this story.

JOPLIN, Mo. – The annual Mercy American Heart Association Heart Walk kicked off on Saturday with Special guest: KOAM’s own Jordan Aubey as emcee. NEOSHO, Mo. – The Neosho Art Council hosted a sidewalk chalk art contest to kick off Neosho’s fall festival. A variety of artists — young and mature — created beautiful sidewalk masterpieces. JOPLIN, Mo. – Collectors in the Joplin area gathered at Cecil Floyd Elementary on Saturday for the 2022 Joplin Collectors Expo. Officials say the expo featured Missouri Robot Fights, a cosplay contest, and more cool events. Plus vendors had plenty of collectibles including various cards, figurines and games. Rear end crash claims life of man in Neosho

NEOSHO, Mo. – Just after 2:30 P.M. on Tuesday, September 20th, the Neosho Police Dispatch received calls regarding a crash near Highway 86 and Baxter Street.

When Neosho Police Officers arrived on the scene, they learned that a 2022 Buick Encore traveling eastbound on Highway 86 struck the rear of a 2021 Hyundai Elantra which was stopped in the left-hand turn lane.

Officers later identified the Buick driver as 74-year-old Charles Hixson of Neosho. The Newton County Coroner’s Office later pronounced Hixson deceased on the scene.

Police say the driver of the Hyundai, Shirayne Rabualiman 21-year-old of Neosho, was treated and released on scene by the Newton County Ambulance.

News To Know: drunk driving crash in Neosho kills one man and Queen Elizabeth II passes away at the age of 96

NEOSHO, Mo. – Authorities say a crash involving a suspected drunk driver kills one man. The crash happened around 7:30 Wednesday night on Neosho Boulevard. Authorities say a pickup pulled into traffic and was hit by two other vehicles. Two passengers in the bed of the pickup were ejected. One of those people and the driver suffered moderate injuries. The other, 39-year-old Jeremy Olmstead of Neosho, was killed. The two other drivers were uninjured. Police found the driver of the pickup was under the influence at the time. DUQUESNE, Mo. – No one was injured when an SUV rear-ended a Joplin school bus. The bus was loaded with Joplin students headed to Soaring Heights Elementary on Thursday morning. The school district says parents were contacted and most of the students were taken to school on another bus, while some were transported by parents. LAS VEGAS (AP) – Police in Las Vegas have arrested the Clark County public administrator, Robert Telles, for the murder of 69-year-old veteran newspaper reporter Jeff German. Police say video reveals the suspect confronted the journalist outside his home last Friday morning. Video also showed a GMC Yukon Denali at the crime scene. On Wednesday, Telles was seen with a car matching that description in his driveway and police traced DNA found on Telles’ hat and shoes to the crime scene. In May, German wrote a series of articles for the Las Vegas Review Journal, critical of Telles’ conduct on the job, including “allegations of emotional stress, bullying and favoritism” in the public administrator’s office. LONDON (AP) – Outside London’s Buckingham palace a large crowd sang Britain’s national anthem. Across the nation, Britons are looking back on the life and legacy of Queen Elizabeth the Second’s seven decades on the throne. Queen Elizabeth ruled through 15 prime ministers – from Winston Churchill to the newly-elected Liz Truss. The Queen’s passing on Thursday at her Balmoral Castle, her summer home in Scotland, instantly elevated her son Charles to the throne, as King Charles the Third. In Washington, President Biden and the first lady paid their respects and signed a condolence book at the British embassy. The American flag flew at half staff at the White House and the US capitol in the Queen’s honor. In the coming days, her state funeral will be held at Westminster abbey. Neosho man killed in crash, thrown from bed of pickup truck; Driver determined DWI as crash investigation begins

NEOSHO, Mo. – Just after 7:30 p.m. Wednesday evening reports of a serious crash on the Boulevard in Neosho alerted Newton County Central Communications.

The roadway was closed down immediately, all lanes north and south.

NEOSHO FATAL F-150 CRASH PRESS RELEASE SEPT 8 2022

Neosho Police Brandon Beshears tells us three vehicles were involved. A Ford F-150 pickup pulled into traffic from a business, 1039 S Neosho Blvd, and was struck by two northbound vehicles.

There were two individuals in the bed of the pickup truck, both were ejected onto the pavement.

Ofc Beshears says the Missouri State Highway Patrol assisted in marking out the crash scene for investigation.

The driver of the pickup was transported to a Joplin hospital. He suffered moderate injuries.

One male thrown from the pickup bed suffered moderate injuries.

A second male thrown from the pickup bed, Jeremy Olmstead, 39, of Neosho was pronounced deceased at Mercy Joplin. Next of kin have been notified.

Chief Baird states in a media release Thursday,  “per state law all drivers were tested for blood alcohol content, and it was determined the driver of the Ford F-150 was under the influence of intoxicants. Pending the completion of the investigation, charges will be submitted to the Newton County Prosecutor’s office for review.”

The two drivers of in the northbound vehicles were not injured.

The roadway was reopened about 9:45 p.m.

Anderson, Mo. man faces Vehicular Homicide charges after fatal crash

ANDERSON, Mo. — A 25-year-old Anderson man is cited Felony Vehicular Homicide after a fatal crash Saturday morning on the north edge of town.

Anderson Police requested Missouri State Highway Patrol to assist investigation of the crash.  The two-vehicle crash occurred on MO-59 near State Route NN within the Anderson city limits.

Vincent Castro, 25, of Anderson was driving a 2004 Nissan Armada, he suffered serious injuries and was flown Life Flight to Mercy Springfield, Mo.

David Cunningham, 65, of Anderson was driving a 2010 Toyota Tacoma, traveling north on MO-59. He was transported Life Flight to Freeman in Joplin, Mo. where he later died.

As required by law the surviving driver was tested for alcohol. The B.A.C. is not revealed in the preliminary report.

  • Careless & Imprudent Driving Resulting in Motor Vehicle Crash
  • No Insurance

3 teens killed in crash near Stockton, Mo., MCIU investigate tragedy

CEDAR COUNTY, Mo. — The Missouri State Highway Patrol release preliminary information regarding a crash where three teens died east of Jerico Springs, Mo. on Thursday, August 4.

The single vehicle crash involved a 2006 Toyota Scion with five male teens, traveling westbound on State Hwy B.

The driver, Clay Palmer, 19, of Cleveland, Mo. died at the scene.

Two passengers were also killed including, Ryan Chick, 18, of Cabool, Mo. and Logan Meerkatz, 18, of Cleveland, Mo.

Two passengers survived including, Bradley Kidwell, 18, of Cabool, he suffered serious injuries. And Taylor Ranney, 18, of Mountain Grove, Mo. suffered moderate injuries.

[Toyota] topped a hill, became airborne, travelled off the right side of the roadway and overturned. All three deceased were ejected and all three pronounced at the scene shortly after impact.” — Tpr M. Obert of Troop D

The crashed vehicle was removed by Mike’s Wrecker of Stockton, Mo.

The crash is being investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol Crash Investigation Unit.

MCIU (MAJOR CRASH INVESTIGATION UNIT)

The Troop D MCIU was summoned to process the crash. Each MCIU officer is, “trained in the human, mechanical and environmental factors of traffic crash investigation. They are considered court experts in the field of traffic crash investigation.”

There are currently four teams located across the state. Each one utilizes Robotic Total Station technology, allowing for the accurate and fair depiction of crash scenes diagrammed to scale.

Teen killed, second airlifted to Springfield, Mo. hospital after farm vehicle overturns in crash

LAWRENCE COUNTY, Mo. – The Missouri State Highway Patrol report a single vehicle crash occurred Wednesday morning just north of Phelps, Mo. Two teens were in the vehicle. One died at the scene and another suffered moderate injuries.

Sources tell us the 16-year-old male driver of Mount Vernon, Mo. was operating a farm vehicle that overturned just before 10:30 a.m.  A 14-year-old male passenger of Greenfield, Mo. was flown to a Springfield hospital.

Phelps is an unincorporated town/village about 20 miles east of Carthage, Mo. along MO-96, formerly US-66. The post office ceased operation in 1864.

Information provided in a preliminary report state an International LF687 was traveling south on Route UU towards MO-96.  It crashed about 1/10th of a mile before the intersection.

Crash occurred as [LF687] traveled off the roadway and overturned.” –  MSgt S.C. Jones and Cpl K.R. Waters

Silverado Towing of Stotts City removed the vehicle from the scene.

Troopers were assisted by the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department.

Lawrence County Coroner Scott Lakin claimed the body and transported to Lakin Funeral Home in Pierce City, Mo.

Newton Co. man killed in t-bone crash east of Neosho, Mo.

NEWTON COUNTY, Mo. – Just after 6 p.m. Wednesday evening reports of a t-bone crash at State Hwy H and Norway Road alerted Newton County Central Dispatch.

Newton County Sheriff’s Deputies, Granby Fire Dept, Newton County Ambulance responded. Missouri State Highway Patrol were notified.

On the scene we learn the crash proved fatal to one driver, George Eads, 90, of Granby, Mo. He was pronounced on scene. Next of kin have now been notified on Thursday morning.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol MCIU (Major Crash Investigation Unit) were summoned to investigate the crash, which is protocol, when two or more vehicles are involved in a crash resulting in death.

The two-vehicle t-bone crash involved Eads, driving a 2006 Nissan Sentra, traveling eastbound on Norway Road.

Jeffrey Parman, 25, of Rocky Comfort, Mo. was driving a 2014 Mustang, traveling southbound on State Hwy H.  He suffered moderate injuries and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.
