Flames light up the Joplin sky from large 2-story house fire

JOPLIN, Mo. — Just before 5:30 a.m. Friday, December 9, 2022, fire reported at 832 S Pennsylvania alerting Joplin E-911.

Joplin Police, Joplin Fire and METS ambulance responded.

Joplin Fire sounded a second alarm as flames and thick black smoke were visible from an active fire. Tipsters tell us they could see fire and smoke visible in the morning sky near 26th and Pennsylvania nearly two miles to the south.

This residence is on the NW corner of 9th and Pennsylvania. 2-story wood-framed structure with an attic that harbored flames. Even with Ladder 1 and another water cannon on Engine 2 the structure became fully involved within 30 minutes.

One person of the residence was injured exiting the home.  He was transported to an area hospital.  There is no update on his condition at this time.

Shortly before 8 a.m. Joplin Public works responded to assist Joplin Fire in taking down portions of the home to expose hidden fire and hot spots within the structure.

After taking down portions they then continue to soak the areas with water. This also helps to avoid rekindle fires in the coming hours and days.

Fire was declared out at 10:11 a.m.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.  The Joplin Fire Marshal is investigating.

News To Know: KBI homicide investigation, Neosho’s dog park

NEOSHO COUNTY, Kan. – On December 6, at around 5:00 pm, Neosho County, Kansas Sheriff deputies went to 6845 160th Road in rural Chanute. This follows a welfare check after the Cumberland County, North Carolina, Sheriff’s Office called with information causing concern for a woman who lived at that home. Deputies searched the property and found the body of 47-year-old Elaina M. Asprea next to a field near the home. The Neosho County Sheriff’s Office and Kansas Bureau of Investigation are looking into the case as a homicide. Authorities in Fayetteville, North Carolina, have developed a person of interest in the case. Click here if you would like to read the entire article.

JOPLIN, Mo. – For the fourth time in a two-week span a Range Line convenient store has been burglarized.  Two times in the last two days. These smash-and-grab burglaries have all occurred overnight during closing hours as persons break windows, and/or doors, to gain access, then quickly run inside and grab items before police can respond to the alarm. SARCOXIE, Mo. — On December 7, at about 5 am, reports of a fire in the 200 block of 8th Street alerted Jasper County E-911. According to the report, the fire started at the rear of the home. On arrival active flames and smoke were visible. The two adults of the residence were out safely. Red Cross was requested to assist the two adults who are displaced as a result of the fire. NEOSHO, Mo. – Scenic Park in Neosho is getting a new addition as construction begins on a new dog park. Features range from cones to dogs can run through, a bridge for dogs, a bench for grooming, and even dog watering stations. It will be free to the public and is expected to open on January 31st. News To Know: fatal crash, house fire in Newton County

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Kan. — A 2006 Pontiac G6 traveling northbound on U-69 alternate crossed the center line and struck a 2016 GMS truck traveling southbound. The Pontiac’s driver, Trey Cunningham, was taken to Freeman West with a fatal injury. Next of kin were notified. His passenger, Valeria Lerma, was taken to Mercy in Joplin with a suspected serious injury. The driver of the GMC, Shannon Taft from Baxter Springs, was taken to Freeman West in Joplin with suspected serious injuries.

NEWTON COUNTY, Mo. — About 6:15 a.m. Monday, December 5, a passerby spotted a structure fire just north of Elm Road on State Route E near Diamond alerting Newton County Central Dispatch. The structure appeared to be a former residence, now used for storage. Chief Skosberg said he could see the fire from two miles away easily. JOPLIN, Mo. — Joplin city staff wants to better the city’s homeless situation by conducting a study about what’s working and what isn’t. In the council meeting on Monday, December 5th, the city council asked to approve a study that would use special use tax funds for homeless research. Robin Smith from Homeless Coalition says right now homeless people with animals don’t have places to go because shelters don’t accept animals. Lack of transportation is also an issue.

JOPLIN, Mo. — Joplin could get millions of dollars to help with storm and wastewater improvements. The city is eligible to get more than $12,500,000 in matching state funds to help improve and update nine projects. If Joplin matches dollar for dollar, the city will devote a total of more than $25,000,000 for the projects. News To Know: armed robbery at McDonald’s, word of the year

MONETT, Mo. – Authorities in Monett say a man was found dead in a basement after a house fire Tuesday afternoon. Investigators are not releasing his identity at this time. The Monett Fire and Police and the Missouri State Fire Marshals Office are investigating how the fire started. Click here to read more about this story.

BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. — Monday, November 28, Baxter Springs Police responded to a residence, 2400 Lincoln Ave, regarding a shooting. The suspect in the case, Kyle Butts, has been formally charged in relation to the event that took place on November 28th.  He is currently being held at the Cherokee County Jail without bond.  He has been charged with two counts of First Degree Murder, one count of Attempted First Degree Murder, and Interference with Law Enforcement. AURORA, Mo. — Police and investigators responded late Tuesday night, November 29, 2022, to a report of an Armed Robbery at McDonald’s, 1529 South Elliot in Aurora. The dictionary defines “gaslighting” as a psychological manipulation of a person over an extended period of time that causes the victim to question their reality. The goal is for the victim to rely entirely on the manipulator — typically a narcissist — for their perception of reality. Mental health experts say gaslighting requires planting seeds of doubt in order to exert control and distort the victim’s view of reality.

The Big 3: fatal crash, multiple fires and Halloween displays

BIG STORY #3: Reports of multiple departments responding to a fire north of Columbus on the night of October 17th. Authorities say the single story residence was consumed by fire. Chief Steven Burton of Columbus Fire-Rescue says the single occupant of the home was lighting a propane heater. There was some sort of malfunction and fire erupted. The resident ran outside and shut off the tank but the home was already on fire. The resident suffered minor burns but refused medical care. Click here to read more about this story.

BIG STORY #2: Sgt. Andy Blair of the Joplin Police Department confirms that Saturday night, October 15, a fatal crash occurred where a Joplin teen was killed. The crash occurred at 11:21 p.m. near the intersection of Deer Drive and Dove Drive south of Grand Falls. The 1994 black Honda Civic vehicle had four occupants. Two occupants had been ejected from the vehicle, they were both rushed to Joplin hospitals. One sustained moderate injury and one was pronounced deceased at the hospital. BIG STORY #1: About 3:45 p.m. on October 15th,  reports of a structure fire at 233 CR180 in Brooklyn Heights alerted Jasper County Emergency 911. Authorities confirm the presence 0f residents in the house at the time, but there were two cats that are unaccounted for. When deputies arrived on the scene the two-story residence was fully engulfed. According to county records the residence sits on 8 acres, built in 1904. Pierce City Fire Protection District battle house fire on Beech Road

UPDATE: Reports that the fire at 30628 Beech Road had rekindled just before 4:15 p.m. alerted Pierce City Fire Protection District for a full response.  Mutual aid partners also responded to assist including Monett City Fire Dept, Monett Rural Fire, Sarcoxie Fire Dept and Sarcoxie Rural Fire Dept. PCFPD noted their busy day in a release of information online.

NEWTON COUNTY, Mo. — About 4:45 a.m. Wednesday morning, October 12, 2022, reports of a structure fire on the NE edge Newton County near Wentworth at 30628 Beech Road alerted Newton County Central Dispatch and Barry Lawrence E-911.

Pierce City Fire Protection and Newton County Ambulance responded emergency. Sarcoxie Rural Fire, Monett Fire and Monett Rural Fire responded for mutual aid.

Sources tell us the single-level residence also had a full basement.

Since the location was rural, a tanker shuttle was set with multiple apparatus shuttling water to a port-a-tank at the scene.

Monett Rural Fire state in a release of information, “Tanker 1223 responded as auto aid with 2 crew members to assist Pierce City Fire Protection District. Tanker 1223 shuttled water from Pierce City to Wentworth until no longer needed by PCFPD command.”

A Pierce City Fire Protection representative tells us no occupants of the home were injured. And no firefighters were injured fighting the fire.

The Red Cross responded to assisted an unknown number of children and adults.

Liberty Utilities responded to control the utilities.

Monett Rural Fire say they were released about 7:30 a.m.

News To Know: pursuit becomes standoff, reward for escapees

JOPLIN, Mo. – About 9:30 p.m. reports of a police pursuing a silver pickup truck traveling south on Schifferdecker. The pickup was spiked and stopped near Coyote and Concord Lane, south of 32nd and Schifferdecker. Joplin Police requested assistance in a Felony Car Stop. Witnesses who live in the Arbor Hills Neighborhood tell us they heard a gunshot as Joplin Police closed down the road to all traffic and began a contain and call-out for the driver of the pickup. INDEPENDENCE, Kan. – A child dies after a house fire in Independence, Kansas. The fire happened on Wednesday afternoon. Cherryvale firefighters, along with crews from Independence Rural Fire, Sycamore Rural Fire and the City of Independence Fire and EMS, were dealing with a fully engulfed fire. MOUND VALLEY, Kan. – Authorities say the deaths of two southeast Kansas residents are now considered homicides. On October 3, the Labette County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call. Someone found two bodies at around 8:30 a.m. while trying to check on their friends. When officers got there, they found the decomposing bodies of both a male and a female. The Kansas Bureau of Investigations released their identities. The victims have been identified as Leanda R. Pound, 43, of Mound Valley, and Jason M. Bakken, 39, of Mound Valley.

OTTAWA COUNTY, Okla. – Authorities offer $2,500 rewards for information leading to the capture of two escapees. Police consider Daniel Zajicek and Tyler Tavis armed and dangerous. They are 2 of 4 inmates who escaped Tuesday while in a dorm-style pod.

W 7th St closed as Joplin Fire extinguish house fire

JOPLIN, Mo. — Just before 3:40 a.m. Sunday reports of flames coming from a residence, 630 S Porter, alerted Joplin Emergency 911.

Joplin Police, METS ambulance and Joplin Fire Dept responded.

Joplin Fire Command stated on arrival, “Residential structure heavy fire on the alpha side, we’ll be out for attack.”

Everyone was out safely. This residence is on the NW corner of 7th and Porter, two blocks from McDonalds at 7th and Maiden Lane. West 7th traffic was diverted as fire trucks and personnel used the street surrounding the house.

As we arrived the active flames were out but you could see the fire was so intense it melted the siding on the house neighboring to the north. Also damaged was a vehicle in the driveway.

Fire was under control at 4:01 a.m. less than 20 minutes after the initial call.

The damage to the residence is extensive, Liberty Utilities and Spire Gas were notified to turn off utilities to the structure.

“Fire through the roof,” first JFD units report from Joplin’s East Town Neighborhood

JOPLIN, Mo. — Friday just before 2:15 p.m. reports of fire in the 1600 block east 3rd alerted Joplin E911.

Joplin Fire responded sounding a second alarm for more manpower, METS ambulance and Joplin Police were on their way too.

Joplin Police tell us on scene they didn’t realize how windy it was, as the flames extended 25 feet into into the air, and smoke plumed across East 3rd.

1626 E 3rd is directly south of the Boys & Girls Club of SWMO. 

Neighbors tell us everyone was out of the house at 1626 E 3rd, directly across from the Boys and Girls Club.

“Fire through the roof,” first Joplin Fire units report cracked through our P25 digital trunking scanner. Then Joplin Fire was out for defensive attack as East 3rd Command was established.

This single-story wood frame residence is owned by Joplin Housing Authority. It’s the second housing authority home to burn in the last two weeks.

Two weeks ago a duplex fire in the Leonard Park Neighborhood displaced two tenants. Repairs are still being made there in the 400 block of Ozark.

Joplin Fire Marshal is on scene along with Chief Gerald Ezell and Dep. Chief Andy Nimmo.

House fire extinguished in minutes by Joplin Fire, extensive damage to small residence

JOPLIN, Mo. — About 2:45 p.m. Wednesday calls for fire at 308 W 18th alerted Joplin Dispatch.

Joplin Fire, METS ambulance, and Joplin Police responded.

308 W 18th is on the east alley of 18th and S Pearl. 

Upon arrival smoke and flames were visible from the roofline and the east side of the structure in the alley.

Joplin Police tell us no one was inside the structure. Additionally no one was injured fighting the fire.

The flames were out within 15 minutes of arrival.

Fire officials are investigating the cause of the fire.

Utilities responded to disconnect service due to the extensive damage to the residence today. Repairs will need to be made after fire damage.
