Colgan shuts out Central Heights in 1A playoff opener

PITTSBURG, Kan. – (WATCH) The Colgan Panthers shut out the Central Heights Vikings 56-0 in the first round of the KSHSAA 1A playoffs Thursday night.

Colgan moves on to face Jayhawk-Linn for a regional championship next week.

Pitt State aims to stay undefeated with tough test at Central Oklahoma

PITTSBURG, Kan. – The Pittsburg State Gorillas will be on the road against Central Oklahoma on Saturday in week 9 of the MIAA season.

Pitt State is aiming to remain unbeaten, heading into the weekend at 8-0 overall. Central Oklahoma is 5-3, including big wins over Northwest Missouri and Emporia State.

It will be a big test for the Pitt State offense, facing a UCO defense that is #3 in the MIAA against the run and has a league-leading 11 interceptions in 8 games.

“Each level of the defense compliments one another,” says Pitt State head coach Brian Wright, “They’re very solid up front. They’re very strong and very physical. Sometimes they can get away with playing just a three man front up there and using one more guy in coverage, and that makes it harder to throw the ball. Their defense also allows them to add a guy from the second level up to the front end and help with the run game. They’re always going to try to one-up you as far as a numbers game goes.”

“They definitely have a good front seven and they have some good guys in the secondary, too,” says Pitt State wide receiver Jack Roberts, “We have to find some ways to get the ball out quickly. That will be a challenge for us, but I think we can handle it.”

On the other side of the ball, the Gorilla defense has been dominant all season long.

Pitt State is the #1 scoring defense in the MIAA, and is #2 in the league in sacks and total defense.

“They’re coached very well,” says Pitt State LB Dubem Okonkwo on the UCO offense, “They run a lot of screens, so we’re going to be doing a lot of retracing and running to the ball. That’s going to be imperative this week. UCO is going to have nothing to lose. They’re going to give us everything they have. It’s imperative that we’re prepared for everything they throw at us.”

“Offensively, they present you with some tough formations,” Wright says, “The run game and the screen game that they have is on another level in my opinion.”

“I’m very thrilled with how our defense has been playing, but there’s still plenty of room for improvement,” Okonkwo adds, “We’ve been playing complimentary football. We have a bent don’t break mentality. Wherever we get the ball on the field we look forward to stopping the opponents from putting points on the board.”

Saturday’s game kicks off at 2 PM in Edmond, Oklahoma.

Frontenac softball raises banner, receives state championship rings

FRONTENAC, Kan. – (WATCH) The Frontenac High School softball team raises their state championship banner and receives their state championship rings Wednesday.

“We’ve all been waiting for this day,” says head coach Cassie Rhuems, “Spring sports end at a weird time. You come back and you get into the grind of summer. I just appreciate the district giving us the opportunity to celebrate these kids. It’s an awesome accomplishment that they will live with forever, and they’ll never forget it. They were a great representation of our community. I’m really proud of them. It wasn’t always happy and fun. We had moments of really bad softball and moments of frustration. I thought it was a great reflection of who these kids are, they way they performed at the regional tournament and at the state tournament. It really just showed what kind of guys they really had.”

Frontenac beat Prairie View 7-1 back in May to claim the 3A state championship. It’s the program’s third state title since 2016.

“We enjoyed today and once we released the banner I told them that we better be back here next year doing the same thing,” Rhuems adds, “The expectation is there. We have the quality of kids to do it again if we want to. We just have to have the right mentality, the right preparation and take care of business when we have the opportunity.”

Lions prepare for road matchup with Missouri Western

JOPLIN, Mo. – (WATCH) Missouri Southern prepares to face Missouri Western on the road on Saturday.

The Lions are 4-4 overall this season, while the Griffons are 3-5.

Currently, Missouri Western has the #1 red zone defense in the MIAA.

“Ultimately, I think the thing that will help us is the run game and bringing those safeties down so we can take some shots with some of our bigger targets,” says MSSU head coach Atiba Bradley on attacking the Griffons defense in the red zone, “They’re a good defense, but there are a bunch of good defenses in this league. We’ve had success. Our red zone numbers are higher than they’ve been in a long time. The challenge will be getting into the red zone, more so than the red zone.”

“They kind of put us in space on the back end. They like to play a lot of man,” says MSSU wide receiver Dwayne Lawson on the Griffons, “They have a good front 7. Our front can definitely take care of that. They’re a good team, but I feel like we’re a good team, too.”

Saturday’s game kicks off at 1 PM.

Columbus grabs momentum heading into 3A playoffs

COLUMBUS, Kan. – The Columbus Titans have a little momentum heading into the 3A playoffs, after beating Parsons 30-6 in their regular season finale last week.

That win gave Columbus back to back wins for the first time this season.

“It was our best performance of the season. We’re just happy to see them doing what they’re capable of doing. We’ve been waiting for this group to take that next step,” says Columbus head coach Blake Burns, “Our three pillars are locked in, family and sacrifice. You don’t have to be blood to be family. That’s what we’ve been preaching to these kids. I think they finally dialed that in and they played four quarters of team football.”

A big key to Friday night’s win was the run game – and getting one of the team’s best players more opportunities to have the ball in his hands.

“We did have to move some bodies around…Landin Midgett was in the backfield last week. He really ran the ball hard and set the tone for us on offense,” Burns says, “Brett did a really good job carrying the ball, too. Our offensive line really played physical for four quarters Friday night, and that’s what we’ve been missing.”

“We obviously ran the ball a ton,” says senior quarterback Brett Hamilton on Friday’s win, “This entire year, we’ve kind of gotten away from what we’ve done in the past few years. We wanted to throw it a little bit more, but we were frustrated with how things were working out so far. We decided hey, let’s get our mojo back and let’s run the ball down somebody’s throat. That’s what we did. We dominated honestly that whole game. We limited our mistakes and we didn’t get behind the chains. It gave us a lot of confidence, and I think we’re getting things rolling at the right time.”

“Getting the running game going was big for us,” Burns adds, “I’m an offensive line coach. It’s kind of been killing my soul a little bit every week.”

Columbus is now 3-5 overall this season. They will be on the road against Burlington (5-3) in the first round of the 3A playoffs on Friday night.

“Burlington is a very physical team. Their wrestling program kind of lends itself to them being a very solid tackling team. Their coaching staff does a great job,” Burns says, “They’ll pull out a trick play when they need to. They may not look the fastest when you turn on the film, but when you show up in Burlington you know they’re going to play hard and they’re going to be quick.”

“I couldn’t even tell you where Burlington is. I’ve heard it’s a nice little town,” Hamilton says, “I heard they have tough kids. They played one of our opponents in Girard, and Girard handled them pretty well. We’re going into it with confidence. We just want to go handle business and win and advance.”

For Hamilton and the seniors, they’re motivated to build on their late-season success – and make sure Friday is not the last game of their high school careers.

“We got a little taste of it last week, knowing that it was our last game ever here in Columbus at Cecil Kline Field,” Hamilton says, “For the seniors, that hit hard. It gave us a little taste of it. I’ve told the guys that every game after this is potentially our last game, and we have to play like it is. I told my guys I’m going to die on the field for them, and I expect the same from them.”

“We’ve tended to peak a little early in the past before going into the playoffs,” Burns adds, “I’m not going to say we’ve necessarily peaked right now, but we’re playing our best football rolling into round one of the playoffs, and that is exactly what we need to be doing.”
