Former MSSU Lion and NFL player Allen Barbre joins East Newton coaching staff

EAST NEWTON, Mo. – There’s an exciting new addition to East Newton’s coaching staff. Former NFL player Allen Barbre is returning to his alma mater to help lead the Patriots this season.

“I wanted to take the opportunity to see if I could help the program and give back to the kids,” Barbre says. “Maybe we can build back some tradition and start working in the right direction.”

Barbre played at Missouri Southern from 20030-2006, before getting drafted by the Green Bay Packers. He spent 10 years playing in the NFL.

Barbre never thought he had a future as a coach, but he says that he realized he has more to give.

“I’ve coached my little boys for a few years and I think the passion has grown from there,” Barbre says. “After being away from the game for a little while, it’s nice to now step back in and be a part of it again. Football has given me a great life and given me opportunity and now it’s time to give back.”

So, Barbre is passing down his wisdom as the offensive line coach at East Newton.

“I see a lot of myself in a lot of these kids,” Barbre says. “I want to teach these kids that hard work out here can carry on into your future. The work ethic that you develop can carry on for the rest of your life. It’s important to teach them to be accountable, teach them to be on time and show up. There’s so many life lessons you can learn here.”

And Barbre has learned a few things himself, now in a coaching role.

“It’s learning to communicate,” Barbre says. “You need to learn how to get it out of my mind and get it to where these kids can understand it.”

East Newton is a very young group this year, but Barbre is confident the Patriots are on the right track.

“We have a small senior class,” Barbre says. “We have a lot of young guys. We just have to continue to build. Everyday we have to come out here and work hard. I think we have the guys to do it.”

Young East Newton team aims to build winning culture under Tom Ellis

EAST NEWTON, Mo. – East Newton has a very young team this year – five seniors and even less with significant varsity game experience.

The Patriots aim to begin to build a winning culture under new head coach, Tom Ellis.

East Newton adds experience, aims to build on 2020 season

GRANBY, Mo. -The East Newton Patriots enter the fall season a more equipped group.

“Going into the season we don’t feel like we have a lot of holes and we’re searching a lot,” says head coach Kyle Wood. “We feel like going to be a little deeper than we’ve been.”

Inexperience is a thing of the past.

“Last year it basically felt like we were a JV team just stepping up,” says senior LG/DE Collin Farley. “We had two starters come back, so no one really knew what it was like to play on Friday nights besides a couple of people. That really showed on the scoreboard. I think the experience will help mainly with confidence and knowing we can play the game. I can beat that guy one on one and not being scared of the person across from you.”

The Patriots have settled in and in Kyle Wood’s third year, the expectations have grown.

“We know what it’s like being hit in the mouth and be in those battles in the Big 8 that you got to be in. Our players know what to expect. They’re not going to freak out. We’ve been under the lights, we’ve been in tough battles, we’ve won some games in the Big 8. It’s a slow build to getting to where we ultimately want to be.”

“It’s a tough conference,” says senior RB/OLB Nathan Evey. “We’re definitely the smallest school in the conference which is challenging but nothing we can’t accomplish if we work hard, know what we can do and have confidence.”

They are sticking to what they know best.

“East Newton has always been known for the tenacity that our kids play at,” says Wood. “We just want to always take pride in what East Newton’s known for: being physical, playing fast and giving it their all every play. I’ve been in the Big 8 now for 15 of the 16 years I’ve coached. We’ve always seen that from East Newton kids – just the strong will that they had no matter the score.”

The Patriots open their season at home against Reeds Spring on August 27th.
