EDMOND, Okla. – The Pittsburg State Gorillas are MIAA football champions for the first time since 2014.
Pittsburg State beat Central Oklahoma 38-7 on Saturday afternoon to claim at least a share of the 2022 MIAA championship. The Gorillas are 9-0 this season with two games left on their regular season schedule.
In Saturday’s win, running back Caleb Lewis rushed for 97 yards and 2 touchdowns. Cleo Chandler, Jr. also had a rushing touchdown for Pitt State.
Quarterback Chad Dodson, Jr. threw for 163 yards and a touchdown. Devon Garrison led the Gorillas in receiving with 69 yards, while Christian Carter caught 5 passes for 51 yards and a touchdown
On the defensive side Antione Nunn, Jr. had an interception returned for a touchdown for the Gorillas. Dubem Okonkwo had 2.5 sacks on the afternoon, bringing his season total to 7.5 sacks. Luke Jennings had a team-high 7 tackles, while Brandon Mlekus and Alex Gaskill each had 6 tackles.
The Gorillas will have a chance to clinch the outright MIAA league championship next
