Timber fire visible for miles across Grand Lake

DELAWARE COUNTY, Okla. — Sunday evening about 7 p.m. Seneca Cayuga Fire requested mutual aid for a timber fire near Paradise Point.

Amber Davis shared photos with KOAM showing the fire across the lake from Lee’s Resort. You can see the timber glowing from fire and EMS lights after the sunset.

Responding to the mutual aid request:

  • Grove Fire
  • Wyandotte Fire
  • Quapaw Tribe Fire
  • BIA Forestry & Wildland Fire Management
  • Cowskin Fire

It was described by firefighters as a “very large” timber fire, about 10 acres, near the Paradise Point area.

Multiple grassfires across region; Extreme dry conditions and high winds

KOAM NEWS NOW (JOPLIN METRO) — Extreme drought conditions persist. No outside burning recommended. Authorities ask you not discard cigarettes.

“All Grove area fire departments are busy with multiple grade fires in Ottawa, Delaware Counties and in McDonald County, Missouri. You may need to adjust your travel plans if you see smoke near you.” — Cowskin Fire Dept

About 3 p.m. Friday Redings Mill Fire were dispatched to separate and unrelated fires miles apart on Foliage Road.

  • Foliage to the east along Highland Drive
  • Foliage on the west side, hydrant fill site (5500 Foliage) to assist grassfire to the north  near Drake Drive

Multiple Fire Depts responded to assist:

  • Joplin Fire
  • Neosho Fire
  • Seneca Fire
  • Galena Kan. Fire
  • Carl Junction Fire
  • Diamond Fire

Other grassfires are being reported:

  • Carthage Fire extinguish grassfire near I-44 exit 22.
  • NEOkla. Quapaw Fire Rescue, Wyandotte Fire, Seneca Cayuga Fire, Cowskin Fire, and Grove Fire busy this afternoon more than one fire.
  • Southwest City Fire and area assisting departments in McDonald County.
  • Vernon County at Compton Junction, North of Nevada large grassfire.

Area firefighters not only battle fires, but also heat exhaustion in these dangerous temperatures

JOPLIN, Mo. — Scorching temperatures continue to make a firefighters job even harder. Physical exhaustion can make it even more dangerous.

These temperatures do not appear to be going down anytime soon either. KOAM Skywatch Weather shows 90’s all week and over 100° on Saturday.

NEOK DELAWARE COUNTY FRIDAY

Cowskin Fire utilized 42 firefighters, nine departments, battling a house fire at noon Friday on 260 Road with a heat index near 113°. No firefighters were injured. One puppy died as a result of the fire.

Rick Bronson of Cowskin Fire says, “Needed extra crews to relieve heat exhausted crews, went through 10 cases of water, 6 cases of Gatorade.”

Bronson tells us they had the fire under control in two hours, but didn’t release crews until 5 p.m. Working on hot spots, overhaul and trading out exhausted firefighters made the operation longer.

“Fighting fire during 113 degrees heat index is not for just anyone,” Cowskin Fire state in a release of information.

The Oklahoma State Fire Marshal is assisting with the fire investigation. There are local efforts to assist the family displaced in need.

JOPLIN 2400 SOUTH CLEVELAND CALL SUNDAY

About 3:30 p.m. Sunday reports of a structure fire on South Cleveland, “first arriving units found a single story residential structure with fire showing on the outside of the residence that had advanced into the attic,” Joplin Fire state in a media release.

No one was home at the time of the fire however three dogs were rescued from the home. The fire was extinguished within 30 minutes of arrival.

Joplin Fire Marshal is investigating.

While still working the fire another call for fire came for Royal Heights.

JOPLIN ROYAL HEIGHTS EAST NASHVILLE CALL SUNDAY

About 4:50 p.m. Sunday Joplin E911 were alerted to reports of a structure fire in Royal Heights on Nashville. Webb City Fire was requested to assist with manpower.

“First arriving units found a vacant single story residential structure with smoke showing. A search of the building was performed and the fire was extinguished,” Joplin Fire states.

No occupants were found during the search. No injuries were reported and this fire is also under investigation by the Joplin Fire Marshal.

“Fighting fire during 113° heat index isn’t just for anyone” — Cowskin Fire Dept

DELAWARE COUNTY, Okla. — Cowskin Fire Dept responded to reports of a structure fire noon on Friday at 260 Road in their jurisdiction.

They requested mutual aid from Grove Fire, Butler Fire, Seneca-Cayuga Fire, Wyandotte Fire, Quapaw Nation Fire and in Missouri, Southwest City Fire. In all nine agencies, 22 apparatus and 42 personnel.

Rick Bronson of Cowskin Fire tells us Saturday, “Needed extra crews to relieve heat exhausted crews. went through 10 cases of water, 6 cases of Gatorade.”

Bronson says they had the fire under control by 2 p.m. but crews weren’t released until 5 p.m. working on hot spots, overhaul and trading out those exhausted firefighters.

“Fighting fire during 113 degrees heat index is not for just anyone,” Cowskin Fire state in a release of information.

“While the house was a total loss and one puppy was lost, some valuable possessions were saved and there were no injuries.”

Grove EMS and Grove Emergency Management also assisted. Cowskin Fire sends out a “big thank you” to all agencies who responded so quickly to assist.

The Oklahoma State Fire Marshal was summoned to assist with investigation along with Delaware County Sheriff. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
