AP Calls Races

AP will tabulate and declare winners in 101 contested elections in Missouri, including seven statewide races and eight U.S. House races. In the 2020 general election, AP first reported results at 8:19 p.m. ET and 99.5% of results by 3 a.m. ET on Wednesday, Nov. 5.

AP does not make projections or name apparent or likely winners. Only when AP is fully confident a race has been won – defined most simply as the moment a trailing candidate no longer has a path to victory – will we make a call. Should a candidate declare victory – or offer a concession – before AP calls a race, we will cover newsworthy developments in our reporting. In doing so, we will make clear that AP has not yet declared a winner and explain the reason why we believe the race is too early or too close to call.

The AP may call a statewide or U.S. House race in which the margin between the top two candidates is 0.5% or less, if we determine the lead is too large for a recount to change the outcome.

AP: Republican US Sen. Moran wins reelection in Kansas

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) – Kansas Republican Jerry Moran on Tuesday won a third term in the U.S. Senate, defeating Democrat Mark Holland, former mayor of Kansas City, Kansas.

Former President Donald Trump endorsed Moran early in 2021, insulating him from a serious Republican primary challenge, though Moran voted to certify the results of the 2020 presidential election the month before Trump’s endorsement. Holland won the Democratic primary in August against five other largely unknown candidates.

Moran’s career has been marked by his ability to retain the support of all factions of the Kansas Republican Party. He represented a western and central Kansas district in the House for 14 years before being elected to the Senate in 2010.

Moran has gained some visibility in Washington in recent years for his work on veterans issues. He is the top Republican on the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, after serving a year as chair when the GOP held a majority. He and Democratic Sen. Jon Tester, of Montana, led a successful effort this year in their chamber to pass improved health care and disability benefits for millions of veterans exposed to toxic burn pits.

Holland is a United Methodist pastor who was elected to local office in 2007, then Kansas City, Kansas, mayor in 2013. He served one term, losing his race for reelection in 2017.

It’s been 90 years since Kansas elected a Democrat to the U.S. Senate.

Sanders defeated Democratic nominee Chris Jones in the race for governor in her predominantly Republican home state, where former President Donald Trump remains popular. Sanders had been heavily favored to win the race, which also included Libertarian nominee Ricky Dale Harrington.

Sanders shattered state fundraising records with her campaign, which focused primarily on national issues. Sanders, the daughter of former Gov. Mike Huckabee, regularly promised to use the office to fight President Joe Biden and the “radical left.”

Sanders succeeds Republican Gov. Asa Hutchinson, who is leaving office in January due to term limits. Hutchinson, who endorsed Sanders’ bid, is considering running for president in 2024 and has frequently split with Trump.

Trump publicly encouraged Sanders to run for governor when she left the White House in 2019 to return to Arkansas.

But Sanders was a known figure in the state long before Trump. She appeared in ads for her father, former Gov. Mike Huckabee, and worked on his campaigns. She managed Sen. John Boozman’s 2010 election and worked as an adviser to Sen. Tom Cotton’s in 2014.

Sanders briefly left the campaign trail in September after undergoing surgery for thyroid cancer. Her doctor said Sanders was cancer free after the surgery.

During Sanders’ nearly two-year tenure at the White House, she scaled back daily televised briefings after repeatedly sparring with reporters who aggressively questioned her. She faced questions about her credibility, particularly after special counsel Robert Mueller’s report revealed that Sanders admitted making an unfounded claim to reporters about FBI agents’ reaction to director James Comey’s firing. But she also earned reporters’ respect working behind the scenes to develop relationships with the media.

Sanders embraced Trump’s rhetoric during her bid for governor and adopted many of his favorite targets, including critical race theory and the national news media. But she’s avoided criticizing Hutchinson, even after the former president labeled Hutchinson a RINO – Republican In Name Only – for vetoing an anti-transgender law.

Sanders said she would have signed that measure – a ban on gender affirming care for minors – into law.

She’s stopped short of agreeing with Trump that his loss in the 2020 presidential election was stolen, though she’s said the former president has the right to make that claim.

Jones, an ordained Baptist minister and nuclear engineer, had presented himself to voters as a more unifying figure than Sanders. He launched his campaign with a video that went viral where he talked about his family’s history in the state.

Crawford County Clerk shares voting tips for the 2022 midterms

CRAWFORD COUNTY, Kan. – The Crawford County Clerk told KOAM’s Olevia Opel what county voters should expect today while hitting the polls.

Those voting in the county today must be registered in advance. Voters who are registered only need to bring a driver’s license or state-issued I.D.

“Wait times depend on the busyness of the polling place,” said Lisa Lusker, Crawford County Clerk. “There is not a lot of waiting in line, usually when it opens from 7 to 8 o’clock is the busiest time but any time after that it slows down a little bit.”

Lusker emphasizes the importance of voting, further stating that placing a ballot is the easiest way to communicate the change you want to see within selected government officials.

“It’s nice to see that people are getting passionate about what they believe,” Lusker said. “I know covid made it harder to go to the polls, but we do have mail-in ballots which you have to sign up for but the deadline is over, we have had a lot of mail-in ballots with a great turnout so far.”

What Amendment One means for Kansas Residents

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Midterms are tomorrow and Kansas voters are keen to decide whether or not they should change the balance of power between the Legislative and Executive branches.

If passed, Constitutional Amendment One would give Kansas lawmakers the authority to overturn regulations or rules that are passed in the state.

Officials say this change could potentially include mandates by the Kansas governor.

“The legislature has sort of gone on record as saying what they see as the pros of this, and that is efficiency,” said Darren Bello, Political Science Professor at PSU. “If they believe that a regulation is not a very good one, instead of having to go to the regular process of passing a bill and having the governor sign it, they can just leapfrog the governor and just simply undo something that has happened.”

Missouri says its Election Protection Hotline is now live

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The non-partisan 866-OUR-VOTE Election Protection Hotline is live in Missouri all day Mon. Nov. 7 and Tues. Nov. 8 with Missouri lawyers available to assist voters who have questions about their voting rights or face difficulties at the polls.

The Missouri Voter Protection Coalition organizes the statewide program in collaboration with the nation’s largest nonpartisan Election Protection effort, to assist all voters who have questions or experience issues casting their ballot.

With new voting laws impacting Missouri voters for the first time, including new ID requirements to vote, redistricting, and many polling place changes, voters and poll workers alike may face challenges navigating the rules, contributing to long lines at the polls.

Voters can call Election Protection toll-free at: 866-OUR-VOTE (866-687-8683) to check their registration and polling place, ask questions or report any problems and get help in real-time.

“Voters should feel confident exercising their right to vote, and knowing they can call to speak immediately to a lawyer on the phone with any questions,” Lieberman said. “No voter should have to leave a polling place without the help they need to vote.”
