Explainer: Trail of lights in the north sky, what was it?

JOPLIN, Mo. — Messages, calls, texts, videos started coming in about 8:15 p.m. Sunday evening to Joplin News First.

  • “What are these lights in the sky to the northeast?” K.H.
  • “Did you see this in the sky it wasn’t a jet!” S.B.
  • “You get any messages about a line of lights flying over minute ago?” B.J.

On Saturday SpaceX launched a Falcon rocket that released 52 new satellites to join the chain of thousands of that are known as STARLINK.

What everyone saw was a line of the STARLINK satellites. They bring the internet to remote areas of the world.

“As of September 2022, SpaceX has over 2,300functioning Starlink satellites in orbit. and over 500,000 active subscribers. They continue to launch up to 53 more satellites per Falcon 9 flight.” — SPACEX
