News to Know: Convicted Oklahoma murderer executed, Wichita company pays employees to substitute teach, and Neosho hires student custodians

MCALESTER, Okla. – On Thursday Oklahoma executed a man for killing two hotel workers during a robbery in 2001. A small group of people gathered to protest the execution outside the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester. Authorities say the now 46-year-old Donald Grant killed Brenda Mcelyea and Felicia Suzette Smith so there’d be no witnesses to his robbery. Mcelyea’s sister spoke to the media after Thursday’s execution. This was the first execution in the U.S. in 2022 and the third in Oklahoma since the state resumed lethal injections in October.

NEOSHO, Mo. – Staff shortages have led to a new way for Neosho High School students to get a jump start on their resume. The Neosho School District is rolling out a new program that will allow students to apply to become a part of their custodial staff. The students will be able to work up to 19 hours a week. David Alan, the custodial supervisor for the school district, says the shortage of custodial staff has impacted their ability to clean the schools properly. So far four students have applied to the program. The custodial team is currently four people short.

WICHITA, Kan. – Another school shortage brought on by the pandemic, not enough substitute teachers. It’s become so dire, some schools have struggled to stay open. In Wichita, Kansas a construction company is stepping in to help. The CEO of Hutton Construction says the plan is to give five extra PTO days to all 275 team members to use to sub or para in classrooms through the end of the year. Some employees are already excited about the opportunity and are getting started with the sub process. They’ll get their regular salary pay on top of pay they earn while subbing.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Missouri Governor Mike Parson is calling for increased funding for higher education in the proposed state budget for next fiscal year. Some of that increased funding would go to Missouri Southern if the budget is passed. One impact would be a $1.4 million dollar increase for the school’s core budget. It would also give the university $30-million dollars for a health science innovation building. The budget would also provide more than $700-thousand dollars for a proposed center for digital media and virtual production.

News to Know: redistricting plans in Kansas and Missouri, Kansas Day education

TOPEKA, Kan. – Top Republicans have pushed their congressional redistricting plan through the GOP-dominated Kansas legislature without much trouble. An expected court battle looms after Wednesday’s legislative action over whether the proposed map goes too far in hurting the state’s only Democrat in congress. The house’s 79-37 vote sends Democratic Governor Laura Kelly a bill that would split the Kansas City area into two congressional districts and move the liberal northeast Kansas city of Lawrence into a district with central and western Kansas. The senate approved the measure last week.

JEFFERSON, Mo. – Republicans in the Missouri Senate are fighting over how to divvy up the state’s eight congressional districts. Senators on Wednesday worked behind closed doors to compromise on new district lines. A plan backed by GOP leaders is projected to continue current political divide of six Republican and two Democratic representatives. But some Republicans want to split the democratic stronghold of Kansas City among multiple districts to give Republicans a shot at winning seven seats.

GALENA, Kan. – Kids at the Galena, Kansas public library on Wednesday learned about the Sunflower State. The library hosted a storytime event centered around Kansas Day, a holiday recognizing when the state became the 34th state back in 1861. Organizers say with Kansas day coming up, it was the perfect time for a history lesson. Kansas Day was first celebrated in 1877 by schoolchildren in Paola.

JOPLIN, Mo. – Being involved in student organizations is a big part of the college experience for many people, but some organizations may not be well known. Missouri Southern wanted to make sure students know what’s available, so they hosted campus involvement day. It was a chance for students to speak with representatives of the organizations, get information, and enter giveaways. The event was in the Billingsly Student Center.

The Iola School District Superintendent tells us the decision was not easy, but it was the best option to keep their doors open and have kids in school while keeping them safe. The Iola School District currently has 75 positive covid cases according to the district’s website. Due to their numbers, McKinley Elementary, Lincoln Elementary, Iola Middle School and Iola High School will require masks throughout the week.

JOPLIN, Mo. – On Tuesday, Joplin city officials hosted a public meeting to discuss the nomination process for the national register of historic places. The city is looking to add the Broadway District of East Town to that register. Adding it would recognize the significance and history of the area to the community, preserve and archive the generated research, and allow for special funding for the district. The city plans to hold another meeting on this topic in July, after the nomination is complete.

NEOSHO, Mo. – Some dogs in Neosho, Missouri had a great day Tuesday. All dog’s dream, a doggy daycare, boarding and training facility, hosted a doggy treat hunt.
