Chanute preps for regional showdown with Bishop Miege

CHANUTE, Kan. – Friday night is a night the Chanute Blue Comets have been waiting for.

“It’s a big one,” says head coach Clete Frazell, “It’s one we’ve been looking forward to, and we’ve been hoping to get to this point. Our kids are excited to step up to the challenge and face a team like this.”

Chanute hosts Bishop Miege on Friday night. The winner will claim a 4A regional championship and move on to the state quarterfinals.

“I think for some people, playing a team like Miege can be intimidating,” Frazell says, “Our kids have responded really well this week. They’re ready to go and our coaches are excited. We’ve been working really hard to figure out what we need to do to put ourselves in a position to be successful.”

The Blue Comets are one of the hottest teams in the area.

Chanute is 8-1 overall and has won eight straight games after losing their season opener to Towanda-Circle back in early September.

Bishop Miege is 3-6 this season, after beating Tonganoxie 34-20 in the first round of the playoffs last week.

“They’re a very talented team with very good players across the board,” Frazell says of the Stags, “They play in a really tough conference, so their record never matches how good of a football team they are. They bring a big challenge, and we’re going to have to play well.”

It’s one of the biggest games for the Chanute program in recent memory. Frazell and the Comets are hoping to have a big home-field advantage with the community packing the stands Friday night.

“We need everybody in Chanute, Kansas out there,” Frazell says with a laugh, “I’ve already talked to Sean Price and Bo Graham. They said they’re coming over with some guys and some of our league coaches are coming to watch. Hopefully there will be a big crowd. It will be a beautiful night for a playoff game in November.  It would be awesome to win this game Friday. It would mean a lot. I think it would be a springboard for us and give us more confidence in ourselves.”
