Carthage hits the road to face Lebanon in class 5 state quarterfinals

CARTHAGE, Mo. – Carthage beat Republic on Friday to claim the district title for the first time since 2019.

The Tigers are 10-1 and enter the next round of the playoffs on an eight-game winning streak. They’ll travel to Lebanon for the class 5 state quarterfinals this Saturday.

Lebanon also has just one loss this season and they average 46 points per game, but the Tigers are ready for the challenge. Led by 22 seniors, Carthage is hungry to bring another championship back home.

“Ever since my sophomore year I’ve been playing, and we just fell short the last two years,” says senior safety Davion King. “It was frustrating. We knew we could have done it because we beat Webb City both those years. It feels good to finally advance and we’re ready for a shot.

“We came into the year with 22 seniors which we’ve never had before,” says head coach Jon Guidie. “These guys have a lot of experience and maturity and they’ve gained those things throughout this season. I think that’s been a huge factor in getting us to this point.”

FAIRLAND, Okla. – A pair of Fairland High School softball standouts signed on Thursday to continue their careers at the college level.

Erica Schertz signed to play at Division I Wichita State, while Kinley Powell signed to play at Labette CC in southeast Kansas.

“They had good plans for me. They explained everything to me really well and they seemed very interested in me,” Powell says of choosing Labette, “I just want to stand out and hopefully get a scholarship to continue my career for the next two years after Labette, and really just play my best.”

“I think the coaching staff really set them apart from other schools,” Schertz says on why she chose Wichita State, “When I went on my visit, I just felt at home and I felt that’s where I needed to be.”

The two helped Fairland make the state tournament three times in their high school careers.

Schertz finishes her high school career with 114 wins as a pitcher, racking up 1,070 career strikeouts and a 1.40 ERA.

Now – she will try to continue her success at the Division I level in Wichita.
