SENECA, Mo. – A new era of Seneca High School football begins this week.
The Indians are in the middle of their first week of practice – in their first season under new head coach Cody Hilburn. Hilburn is a Seneca High School graduate, and comes over from Carthage, where he served as offensive coordinator under head coach Jon Guidie.
In this first week, Hilburn says he’s just looking for improvement every day in practice – and learning about the guys on his new team.
“As a high school football coach you don’t get to recruit kids, so you have to kind of develop your game plan around the personnel you have,” Hilburn says, “Luckily we have some unique kids at some different spots and that kind of makes it easy. We have a good senior class. We have some returning starters who are good kids and good leaders and are doing a great job leading our program.”
Seneca finished last season with a 3-7 overall record in their final year under head coach Ryan McFarland.
Hilburn isn’t setting any goals in terms of number of wins – opting for the simple goal of getting better in practice ahead of their season opener.
“Our expectation has been the same all summer and right now. We just want to get 1% better every time we’re out here on the practice field, and hopefully we’ll be playing our best football at the end of the year,” Hilburn adds, “It’s hot out here. The thing about a kid from Seneca, that stuff doesn’t seem to really bother them. They’re good kids that get out here and work hard and that’s all we can ask from them.”
The Indians open their season on August 27th at home against Marshfield.
