JOPLIN, Mo. – The Joplin Fire Department is leading a search for a man who went over the Grand Falls shortly before 5 p.m. and he did not surface.
According to Capt Will Davis of Joplin Police, he tells us it was reported an adult male went over the falls and did not come back up. Joplin Police responded to assist the Joplin Fire Dept and Joplin Water Rescue.
Redings Mill Water Rescue are providing support at the falls and downstream as spotters. Neosho Water Rescue were requested to station near Zan’s Campground near Coyote Drive. And further downstream Galena Kansas Water Rescue entered the water near Schermerhorn Park in Cherokee County.
Joplin Fire Deputy Chief Andy Nimmo tells us just before 9 p.m while standing at the falls, “It’s just too dangerous. We have called it off for tonight.” He says they will resume in the morning however Missouri State Highway Patrol Water Patrol will lead the operation and Joplin will assist.
He goes on to say the water is swift and dangerous. The banks are dangerous. They ask that everyone avoids the area. “We don’t want to split our resources to go do something else, when we are dealing with this.”
Nixon’s Towing arrived and towed a small red passenger car from the scene. No name is being released at this time, however close friends have remained on the scene the entire evening.
Authorities as you to avoid the area of Grand Falls as the narrow roadway is needed for emergency personnel. They are not allowing people in the area of the falls.
