The Big 3: disturbance at the Ottawa county jail and Garth Brooks to play at Big Cedar Lodge

BIG STORY #3: MIAMI, Ok. – Reports of a disturbance inside the Ottawa County Jail on the evening of August 22nd had numerous police agencies descend on the jail to assist the Sheriff’s office. Authorities said three pods were involved in the disturbance, which began as inmates grew upset over an interruption of phone service. The interruption occurred due to technical difficulties. BIG STORY #2: Baxter Springs, Ks. – Around 12:40 on the afternoon of August 19th, a former Baxter Springs graduate and United States Air Force Pilot is expected to do a low flyover of Baxter Springs in a C-17 military transport aircraft. The C-17, flying at about 1,600 feet, made two sweeps across Baxter Springs from south to the north. BONUS STORY: JOPLIN, Mo. –  In the early morning hours of Friday, August 20th,  reports of a female stabbed at Ewert Park alerted authorities. News To Know: federal indictment in child pornography case and Ottawa county jail protests.

DELAWARE COUNTY, Ok. – An Afton, Oklahoma man is now federally indicted in a child porn case. In May 2021 Glenn Nickols was arrested in Delaware county on charges of aggravated possession of child porn and distribution of child porn. According to court documents an investigation opened after an internet company flagged images of child exploitation. Nickols was convicted and sentenced to ten years. Last week he was charged in federal court as the victims are members of the Cherokee tribe. To read more about this story, click here.

MIAMI, Ok. – Family and friends of Terral Brooks Ellis II protested outside the Ottawa county courthouse on Thursday. They called for justice for the inmate’s death in custody in 2015. Ellis’ mom Shelly Bliss filed a lawsuit against the sheriff’s department in 2017 which is still in the court system and not resolved. In the lawsuit Bliss alleges the nurse working for the jail did not provide medical care to her son. The protest will go again this morning in front of the Ottawa county courthouse starting at 11 am. NEOSHO, Mo. – Officials with the city of Neosho and Missouri Department of Transportation will be celebrating the completion of Neosho’s newest bridge with a ribbon cutting. On September 1st, Coler street bridge will be completed with the ribbon cutting on August 30th. An official says the original bridge was too low which caused flooding concerns, so the new bridge has an arch to mitigate the issue. The ribbon cutting on August 30th will be held at 10:00 a.m.

NEOSHO, Mo. – Murals are something drivers will almost always stop to look at. Neosho offers this form of art on their pavilion. The murals symbolize activities in Big Spring park.

SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT: Cassville school district is bringing back a method of punishment many may not have seen for a while: spanking. According to the district’s website, “swatting buttocks with a paddle” will be administered when all other forms of discipline have failed. Some parents agree with the decision, some do not. MIAMI, Okla. — Reports of a disturbance inside the Ottawa County Jail on Monday evening had numerous police agencies descend on the jail, assisting the Sheriff’s office.

KOAM News producers talked to an official at the jail, who stated three pods were involved in a disturbance which began as inmates were upset about an interruption of phone service, which occurred due to technical difficulties.

We observed GRDA, Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Commerce Police, NEO Police, US Marshals, Quapaw Marshals, Fairland Police and others supporting the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Deputies.

By 10 p.m. supporting police agencies were being dismissed.

No official report of injuries, however we observed at least one person being transported non-emergency from the scene by Integris Ambulance.

Quapaw Marshals arrest man on burglary related charges

OTTAWA COUNTY, Okla. — Quapaw Nation Marshals were alerted Thursday morning to a report of Burglary in Progress near Hwy 137 and 40 Road, rural Quapaw.

Before Marshals arrived the male suspect fled.

Investigation revealed his pickup got stuck at the burglary scene and he fled on foot.

Marshals began searching the area and located the male suspect. Initially, the suspect gave Marshals a bogus name. Marshals were able to have a witness positively identify the suspect a short time later.” — QUAPAW MARSHALS

The male suspect was transported to the Ottawa County jail and is being held on burglary related charges and outstanding warrants
