Floods Threaten Chemical Wasted for some residence of Ottawa County

MIAMI, Ok — The citizens of Ottawa County have dealt with floods for decades and even though it has been dry in the four states, Tar Creek has more than 120 years of active mining contaminated the Tar Creek Superfund Site which has led to a public health crisis among the area’s 31,200 residents.

LEAD (Local Environmental Action Demanded Agency) is trying to clean up Tar Creek to keep the town safe.  When water flood people’s backyards or school grounds then goes down, there could be lead left on the ground which then can put children at a risk for their health.

In 2020 the map project began when a member of the Cherokee Nation partnered with Thriving Earth Exchange to create a map that could visually showcase what happens when Tar Creek floods.

Held every year since 1998, the 24th Annual Tar Creek Conference is tomorrow and Thursday at NEO College, and citizens are encouraged to attend.   The conference brings together scientists, tribal leaders, government agencies, and local residents to discuss current environmental issues.

Miami Police Department displays Drone Team capabilities

MIAMI, Okla. – KOAM’s Segun Bamidele today met with the Miami Police Department to discuss the benefits of its new Drone Team.

According to Miami Police Chief Thomas Anderson, the Department utilizes drones for a variety of law enforcement needs such as:

  • Manhunts
  • Missing person situations
  • Hostage situations
  • Locating runaways
  • Accident reconstruction
  • Traffic control
  • Search and rescue missions

“Most importantly drones save time, and man-hours and are a safer alternative,” Anderson said.

The City says its drones have also been used to do aerial photography and videos of flooding, special events, to map projects, for code enforcement, and for public relations.

The drones have proven invaluable to local law enforcement. For example, recently on a call officers encountered a suicidal man who ran into a wooded area. Using the drone, officers were able to locate the man quickly and flush him out of the woods within minutes with no injuries or incidents.

“It was very difficult to start a drone program then, we jumped in on the ground floor. The FAA had a hard time keeping up with the technology,” Anderson said, “We first had to make sure we adhered to FAA rules and legalities.”

Today the MPD Drone Team fleet uses a very large drone and a few smaller drones depending on the situation or purpose. The MPD’s drones range in cost from $1,200 to $12,000 for the largest.

Local agency offers free training on stormwater construction inspections

LANGLEY, Ok – The Grand River Dam Authority is hosting a free training program for anyone that is responsible for inspecting and installing erosion and sediment control on construction sites.

This event will take place on October 25, 2022, at the GRDA Ecosystems and Education Center in Langley from 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

The training will cover:

  • What to include in a stormwater pollution prevention plan
  • Who has the responsibility to inspect
  • How to properly install best management practices
  • How to conduct an inspection
  • A brief overview of the history of stormwater regulation and applicable laws.

Officials say the best to prevent erosion is to always ensure the soil is covered.

The Oklahoma Department of Environment Quality says construction sites that disturb one or more acres of land must have stormwater pollution prevention plans in place in order to receive a permit. The Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry require sites to have a stormwater construction permit if they disturb one or more acres of agricultural land.

“Not only does sediment reduce the holding capacity of our lakes, but it can also carry nutrients with it, resulting in increased algal blooms,” said Darrell Townsend, vice president of GRDA’s ecosystems and watershed management department. “While during this time of drought we aren’t seeing runoff happening, it is important that contractors are prepared for when the rain does return to reduce any impacts to our waterways.”
