Services set for Oklahoma Deputy killed in barrage of gunfire, second Deputy will recover

OKLAHOMA COUNTY, Okla. — Monday shortly after 1 p.m. three officers were serving an eviction notice and were met with gunfire. Two Deputies were struck. Sgt Bobby Swartz died a few hours later.

We learn Tuesday from the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Dept that the second officer, wounded, Deputy Mark Johns is out of surgery and recovering.

Deputy Johns was with Sgt Bobby Swartz Monday serving lock-out paperwork when a gunman opened fire with a rifle, striking Sgt. Swartz and killing him.  Deputy Johns used his body to try to shield Sgt. Swartz from the barrage of gunfire.  A round struck Deputy Johns, clipping his femoral artery.  Tuesday, doctors performed surgery to fix his artery and remove shrapnel from his abdomen.  Deputy Johns is a hero who was willing to lay down his life for his friend; a testimony to the character of both men.  Monday, as he held Sheriff Tommie Johnson’s hand, he apologized for not being able to save Bobby.  Our prayers are with Deputy Johns that he heals from the physical and emotional scars he now carries.” — OK CO SHERIFF

Tuesday evening law enforcement from around the region escorted Sgt. Bobby Swartz, to Bill Marritt Funeral Home.
