Before paved roads there was The Jefferson Highway

PITTSBURG, Kan. — The Jefferson Highway was an auto trail, it was before paved roads came along and it ran north and south. From Winnipeg, Canada / New Orleans, Louisiana.

The Jefferson Highway pre-dates US-69 and US-71. It was before federalization of highways in 1926. Back then the roads (auto trails) creation and maintenance were up to cities and businessmen.

There was a 1915 convention and an Iowa businessman, publisher, E.T. Meredith came up with the idea.

“When [the convention] first met they came up with terminal points. You have Kansas City to Joplin to Muskogee. The road was fluid, depending on who was putting up the money up to make these roads.” — Michelle Hansford

From Kansas City at times, depending on what county had the best roads it would go close to the state line or points farther west.

This Saturday June 4, beginning at 11 a.m. there will be a parade of classic cars from Meadowbrook Mall to Arma. They will then turn around and then to come back to the Crawford County Historical Museum for afternoon events.

The lead car will be a 1910 Model T.
