Severe Storms and Heavy Rain in the Lower Mississippi Valley

A cold front arriving into the Mid to Lower Mississippi Valley today will trigger severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall. The severe storms may produce large hail, damaging winds and tornadoes, while the heavy rain may result in flooding. Meanwhile, elevated and critical fire weather threats are in effect across the southern Rockies and High Plains today, due to gusty winds and dry conditions.

Severe Thunderstroms in the Central U.S.; Critical Fire Weather in the Southwest

Isolated severe thunderstorms are possible across parts of the upper Mississippi Valley into Nebraska late this afternoon and evening. The severe thunderstorm threat shifts to the central Plains for Tuesday. Elevated to critical fire weather conditions are forecast over portions of the Southwest, Northeast and South Dakota today then over the southern High Plains and southern Rockies on Tuesday.

Critical Fire Weather Area in the Plains; Quiet Conditions Easter Weekend

Critical fire weather conditions exist across portions of the Northern and Southern Plains today. Record breaking cold temperatures will overspread areas from the Lower Mississippi River Valley to the Northeast over the next few days. Relatively quiet conditions will exist across much of the contiguous U.S. this weekend and into early next week.

High Winds and Critical Fire Weather in the Plains

A strong storm system tracking across south-central Canada is spreading a large area of gusty to high winds across nearly the entire Great Plains region today. Wind gusts of 60-75 mph could blow down tree and power lines as well as make for difficult travel, especially for high-profile vehicles. An additional impact is critical fire weather conditions. Any fires that develop can spread rapidly.

High Winds in the West; Critical Fire Weather Risk in the Plains

A frontal system moving across the west will bring widespread strong winds from the Pacific Northwest into the Northern Plains. A critical fire weather threat is expected from the High Plains into the Southern Plains. Heavy mountain snow will also be possible in the Pacific Northwest and Intermountain West.

Another Potential Severe Weather Event for the Southern U.S.

A week after a multi-day severe weather outbreak, another severe event appears likely across the Southern U.S. through Thursday. A moderate risk of severe thunderstorms is in effect for Thursday across parts of the South, including the Memphis, Birmingham and Jackson, Mississippi metro areas. These thunderstorms will contain strong tornadoes, large hail and damaging winds.

A week after a multi-day severe weather outbreak, another severe event appears likely across the Southern U.S. starting late today through Thursday. A moderate risk of severe thunderstorms is in effect for Thursday across parts of the South, including the Memphis, Birmingham and Jackson, Mississippi metro areas. These thunderstorms will contain strong tornadoes, large hail and damaging winds.

Two Systems To Follow Early This Week

Two storm systems will impact portions of the U.S. early this week. A powerful low pressure system will lift from the southern Plains to the Upper Mississippi Valley and Great Lakes with severe thunderstorms, locally heavy rain, critical fire threats and some snow. Meanwhile, another system will dig from the Northwest to the south-central Rockies with rain, gusty winds and heavy mountain snow.

Major Severe Weather Outbreak Expected Across the South

A vigorous storm system will roll through the Southern U.S. over the next 2 days or through Thursday and a widespread severe weather outbreak is expected from the Lower Mississippi Valley and South into the Southeast. These intense thunderstorms are capable of producing numerous tornadoes (several intense and long track), damaging winds (some hurricane force) and large hail (some baseball size).
