Gingerbread house building contest at the museum

JOPLIN, Mo. — One thing that pairs well with Christmas is a gingerbread house. Nana Claus from Inspiring Your Creativity stopped by the studio to tell everyone how to participate. All you have to do is make a gingerbread house and drop it off between December 1st and 9th. Results will be announced on the 10th. Don’t have a way to build one? Well, Nana Claus brings you good news: the first 25 people at 3:30 on December 2nd at the Joplin History & Mineral Museum will get a kit and can enter it into the contest!

KOAM Morning Show’s Thanksgiving dishes

It’s hard to believe that sometimes a whole year passes by quickly. Thanksgiving is already almost here and like last year — our KOAM family brings dishes for you to make at home. From our News Assistants to our on-air talent — everyone has something to contribute. Each recipe is prepared with the utmost care and love. Below you’ll find the recipes for everything that was made today:

Green bean casserole:

  • 2 cans of French-cut green beans
  • 1 can of cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 cup of milk
  • Soy sauce to taste
  • 6 strips of bacon
  • 2 cups of fried onions
  • Half a cup of shredded cheese

Cinnamon Monkey Bread:

  • 2 oz Pillsbury Grands cinnamon rolls
  • 1/2 cup of granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp of ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup of butter
  • 1/4 cup of dark brown sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Chopped pecans (optional)

 

3 Cheese mac:

  • 1 package elbow macaroni or Fusilli pasta
  • 6 tablespoons of butter (cubed)
  • 4 cups of 2% milk (warmed)
  • 4 cups of shredded gruyere cheese
  • 2 cups of shredded extra-sharp cheddar cheese
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 3/4 tsp ground pepper
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 and a 1/2 cups panko bread
  • 1/2 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons butter (melted)

Pumpkin Pie:

  • 3 teaspoons of cinnamon
  • 1 cup of vanilla creamer
  • Pinch of salt
  • Pinch of pepper
  • A dollop of whip cream to the puree
  • Graham cracker crust

Strawberry cake mix cookies:

  • 15 oz of strawberry cake mix
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup of white chocolate chips

Chicken flavored stuffing:

  • 1 box of stuffing (chicken flavored)
  • 1 and 1/2 cups of water
  • 1/2 stick of butter

Finnish donuts (munkki):

  • 2/3 cup water
  • 1 (2 oz) cube fresh yeast or 1 and 1/5 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cardamom
  • 1 large egg
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour (divided)
  • 1/4 cup (4 tablespoons) unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1 quart of canola oil (for frying)
  • 3/4 cup of sugar (for garnish)

Cheesy potato casserole with cornflakes:

  • 1 bag frozen hash browns (shredded or cubed)
  • 2 cups cheddar cheese
  • 16 oz sour cream
  • 1 can of cream of chicken soup
  • 3/4 cup of butter
  • 1 cup of cornflakes (or more if desired)

Simple peasant bread:

  • 4 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp instant yeast
  • 2 cups of lukewarm water
  • 2 tablespoons of softened butter

Roasted sweet potatoes:

  • 3 lbs of sweet potatoes
  • Granulated garlic
  • Maple syrup dust
  • Honey
  • Cayenne

Brown gravy:

  • Beef stock or beef broth
  • Flour
  • Butter
  • Seasonings (garlic powder, onion powder, bay leaf)

How to make a soy-based pumpkin muffin

Charlene Patton from the Kansas Soybean Commission stops by to teach us how to make soy-based pumpkin muffins! Not only are they super delicious — they’re super easy to make as well! Here’s how to make them:

 

  • 1 cup canned pumpkin
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 1/3 cup plain soy beverage
  • 1¼ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 12 tablespoons Pumpkin Spice Candied Nuts
  1. Combine in a large mixing bowl pumpkin, eggs, vegetable oil, soy beverage, sugar and
    vanilla; whisk to blend.
  2. Add flour, baking soda, pumpkin pie spice, and salt; stir to blend in all ingredients.
  3.  Line the muffin tin with paper liners or grease the tin with vegetable oil.
  4. Fill muffin cups ¾ full; top with 1 tablespoon Pumpkin Spice Candied Nuts.
  5. Bake at 350 degrees for 23 to 25 minutes or until the wooden pick inserted comes out clean.
  6. Let cool for 10 minutes and then remove to cooling rack. Makes 12 muffins.

Here’s how to make those candied nuts as well:

  • ¾ cup chopped roasted soynuts
  • ¾ cup chopped pecans
  • 1 egg white
  • 5 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground pumpkin pie spice
  1.  Combine in medium bowl soynuts and pecans with egg white, granulated sugar and
    pumpkin pie spice.
  2.  Spread nut mixture on a parchment-covered baking pan.
  3.  Bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 15 minutes; stir and continue baking for about 10 minutes or
    until golden brown. Set aside to cool. Makes 1 ½ cups

SEK Humane Society introduces us to Buddy

Kelsey Keeny — the facility administrator — from the SEK Humane Society dropped by with an 8-month-old Pit Bull/Boxer mix named Buddy. Not only is he almost ready to adopt he’s a very gentle dog that would love to join your home. They also have some events going on! Not only did they recently hold a fundraiser, but they’re holding a bad pet photo event. All you have to do is pay $5 and bring a photo of your pet! Then the staff will draw your pet. It makes the perfect gift for the pet lover in your life. They’re also going to be a part of the Pittsburg Christmas Parade.

Cecil Floyd Elementary PTA hosts its 31st annual craft show

JOPLIN, Mo — Come one…Come all! The Cecil Floyd PTA is putting on its 31st annual craft show at Cecil Floyd Elementary (2201 W 24th street) on November 19th from 9 AM to 4 PM. They ask for a $3 donation to enter the craft show.  Their early bird special is from 8 AM to 9 AM which requires a $10 donation.

How to safely fry a turkey this holiday season

PITTSBURG, Kan. – The holiday season is right around the corner and this year you might to try frying it. However, there are safety precautions that you must take before you can do it. One of those things is dethawing your entire turkey. This process can take a while so starting it now is very important so that you don’t have the fire department at your house due to a fire. Our very own Janna Hautala met up with Chef Anthony and Pittsburg’s newest Fire Chief, Taylor Cerne, to talk about how to properly fry a turkey and show what could go wrong.

Charlene Patton teaches us how to make pumpkin mousse

Charlene Patton from the Kansas Soybean Commission joins us back in the studio. This week — she’s teaching us to make pumpkin mousse. Here’s how to make this delicious recipe:

You’ll need the following ingredients:

  • 3 ounces of soy cream cheese, softened
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
  • 1 can (15 ounces) pumpkin
  • 1 and 1/2 cups whipped topping’
  • 6 tablespoons of pumpkin spice candied nuts

Here are the instructions on how to make it:

  1. combine soy cream cheese and brown sugar in a mixing bowl until smooth.
  2. add pumpkin pie spice and pumpkin; mix until blended
  3. fold in 1 cup of whipped topping. Serve in dessert dishes.
  4. top with reserved whipped topping and candied nuts

 

Carl Junction Theatre presents “Little Women: The Musical”

CARL JUNCTION, Mo. — Our support of local productions continues as we bring on Carl Junction Theatre. They’re bringing “Little Women: The Musical” to the 4-states. Happening from November 17th to the 20th at the Jerry B Stark Performing Arts Center (206 S Broadway Avenue) — there’s plenty of opportunity for you to take your family and see it!
