The Carl Junction post office is raising awareness about breast cancer

CARL JUNCTION, Mo. — The Carl Junction post office is raising awareness about breast cancer.

The post office is selling Breast Cancer Research Stamps and is competing with post offices across the nation.

The forever stamps cost 75 cents a piece and 15 cents of that will go to research a cure for cancer.

In 2014, 2015 and 2016 the Carl Junction post office sold the most Breast Cancer Research Stamps nationwide.

“Let’s say you put it on a birthday card and send it to your aunt and she had forgotten about doing her annual mammogram then she sees the pose of doing a self breast exam. Oh I got to go do a mammogram. And if one stamp just one stamp saves one life its so worth it. That’s what it’s all about,” said Sharon Clark, Retired Carl Junction Postmaster.

Right now Carl Junction is in third place for the most Breast Cancer Research stamps sold in the state of Missouri.

Joplin Globe to change home delivery according to carriers

JOPLIN, Mo. – Customers of the Joplin Globe newspaper will be seeing changes to home delivery. That’s according to a letter from paper carriers to customers.

Paper carriers wrote the letter, getting in touch with customers about the change.

The letter stated in part, “October 30th, 2021 will be your last home delivery. The Joplin Globe will be making a change, they will do away will all paper carriers and will start delivering your papers to you by the United States Postal Service starting November 2nd, 2021.”

The paper carriers expressed that it had been a pleasure delivering papers and wished folks happy holidays. They also shared hope that the delivery service will be the same great service they provided.

KOAM reached out to the Joplin Globe for an interview.

USPS Statement

KOAM also reached out to the United States Postal Service about the service expected once they start delivering the paper. The USPS gave KOAM the following statement in response.

“On October 1, the Postal Service will implement new service standards for First-Class Mail and Periodicals. These new service standards will increase delivery reliability, consistency, and efficiency for our customers and across our network.

Most First-Class Mail (61 percent) and Periodicals (93 percent) will be unaffected by the new service standard changes. Standards for single-piece First-Class Mail traveling within a local area will continue to be two days.

The Postal Service will increase time‐in‐transit standards by 1 or 2 days for certain mail that are traveling longer distances. By doing so, the Postal Service can entrust its ground network to deliver more First-Class Mail, which will lead to greater consistency, reliability, and efficiency that benefits its customers.

The service standard changes are part of our balanced and comprehensive Delivering for America Strategic Plan and will improve service reliability and predictability for customers and enhance the efficiency of the Postal Service network. The service standard changes that we have determined to implement are a necessary step towards achieving our goal of consistently meeting 95 percent service performance.”

Sheriff addresses fake news surrounding Cassidy Rainwater case

DALLAS COUNTY, Mo. – “99.999999% of what has been posted to social media is CRAP,” stated Dallas County Sheriff Scott Rice, addressing fake news surrounding the Cassidy Rainwater case.

Sheriff Rice addressed misinformation and rumors on social media Thursday evening, October 7, 2021.

Someone reported Rainwater missing in August. No one had seen her since July.

The FBI got a tip about her whereabouts and alerted the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office. They obtained a search warrant and collected evidence from the home of James Phelps. Authorities later arrested him and Timothy Norton. Prosecutors have charged both suspects in the kidnapping of Rainwater. But, she is still missing.

Authorities are releasing information as they decide appropriate, reminding folks that this is an ongoing investigation. “We are working in the real-world and this is an active ongoing investigation. When all members of the prosecution team believe that it is appropriate to release information, we will keep you informed. Until that time, I can tell you we have all parties involved with Cassidy Rainwater’s case in jail and we expect additional charges to be filed in the coming days,” stated Sheriff Rice on social media.

Statement on Fake News regarding Cassidy Rainwater Case

The following is Sheriff Rice’s statement via the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page.

“Addressing Fake News:
There is a lot of misinformation and rumors regarding the Cassidy Rainwater case being circulated across social media and various news platforms.

While I understand the impatience and curiosity of the people, I’m going to give you a piece of advice. It is not a good idea to listen to “a crime reporter/blogger “or Tic Tok videos that is sitting in their apartment or their mommy and daddy’s basement eating Great Value cheese puffs and drinking box wine with grand intentions of being a social media superstar. If you are hanging on very word is this type of crap, believing it to be fact, you are living in a fantasy world.

This isn’t a tv series or movie where we go to commercial break and have lab results in 15 minutes. Searching a crime scene for 7 days 24 hours a day takes that long, 168 hours.

99.999999% of what has been posted to social media is CRAP.

Law Enforcement Officers must play within the rules of the American Criminal Justice system. While the system has its faults, it’s still the best system in the world. We are judged by a jury of our peers with a Judge presiding over the case, a Prosecutor who presents the case, and a Defense attorney who defends their client.

This is where ALL facts of the case come out, not Tic Tok, Facebook, or any other social media outlet. NO, you are not entitled to a play by play of an ongoing investigation. If you want to be in the know, we are hiring along with every other law enforcement agency in the country.

We are working in the real-world and this is an active ongoing investigation. When all members of the prosecution team believe that it is appropriate to release information, we will keep you informed. Until that time, I can tell you we have all parties involved with Cassidy Rainwater’s case in jail and we expect additional charges to be filed in the coming days.

If you are not a resident and are planning a trip into our Beautiful County to sightsee, remember a few things. While the citizens of Dallas County are friendly, neighborly, caring, and kind people, we do not like those who show up to trespass, litter, vandalize, harass, or destroy property. If this is your intention, you are not welcome here and we will prosecute you for this.

Sheriff Rice.”

Cassidy Rainwater: Missing Person Case

On August 26, 2021, the Dallas County, Missouri Sheriff’s Office took a missing person report. The reporting party told authorities that Cassidy Rainwater had been missing since July 25, 2021. The Sheriff’s Office says she has associations in Dallas, Laclede and Greene Counties in southwest Missouri.

After the report of Rainwater’s disappearance, authorities questioned James Phelps at his home on Moon Valley Road. Investigators believe he was the last person to be in contact with her. According to a Fox affiliate, Phelps acknowledged that Rainwater had been staying with him while she got back on her feet. However, he claims he hadn’t seen her since she left his property a month prior.

Authorities looked in the loft on his property where she was staying. They found it “stripped” with no personal belongings of Rainwater’s. They then left the property.

Anonymous Tip

On Sept. 16, the FBI office in Kansas City received an anonymous tip, which included a photo of Rainwater in a cage. The FBI forwarded that information to the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office.

That same day, the Sheriff’s Office got a search warrant for James Phelps’ phone. They found several photos of Rainwater locked in a cage, according to court documents.

During a search of the property, deputies and federal agents took items for the investigation. Authorities have not disclosed what those items were.

James Phelps, Timothy Norton Arrested

Since the tip and search of the property, authorities have arrested two people.

Prosecutors charged James Phelps and Timothy Norton with felony kidnapping. According to court documents, investigators said Norton admitted he helped Phelps to restrain Rainwater.

Norton and Phelps are in the Dallas County Jail without bond.

The suspects appeared in court on Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2021, via Polycom for a criminal hearing. The courts set a preliminary hearing for November 5 at 9:30 a.m.

Phelps’ Home Burns Down

Investigators say the home of alleged kidnapper James Phelps burned to the ground late Monday night, October 4, 2021.

Multiple fire crews responded to the scene on Moon Valley Road in the Windyville area of Dallas County, Missouri. They worked to put out hotspots. According to a Fox affiliate, while out there, a Dallas County deputy found something that resembled a tripwire. The Springfield bomb squad responded to investigate. Authorities say they detonated an explosive device near the area of the fire.

1 of 3 defendants pleads guilty in 2020 Lamar murder

BARTON COUNTY, Mo. – Lane Bronson pleads guilty for his role in the 2020 Lamar murder of Terry Harless.

Bronson is one of three defendants in the case. Judge Dean Dankelson set sentencing for December 17, 2021. Bronson is still in custody.

LAMAR MURDER

In addition to Lane Bronson, prosecutors in Barton County, Missouri charged David Morris and Tre Ackerson with second-degree murder. Investigators say the men are responsible for the shooting death of Terry Harless.

On July 13, 2020, Lamar police officers responded to a call about gunshots. They went to the location on the 700 block of Broadway. They found Harless, 51, dead. Police called it an “isolated event” and a homicide.

On December 15, 2020, the Barton County Prosecutor’s Office charged Lane Bronson, of Carthage. Eight days later, prosecutors charged Tre Ackerson, of Joplin, and David Morris, of Duenweg.

The courts scheduled a hearing for Tre Ackerson and David Morris on Thursday, October 14, 2021.

OKLAHOMA INDICTMENT

MAYES COUNTY, Mo. – Three suspects in the Lamar homicide are also facing an Oklahoma murder case indictment. Both happened in July of 2020.

On Friday, July 23, 2021, a grand jury indicted four more suspects in the kidnapping and death of an Osage Nation resident. This brings the number to eleven Joplin area residents charged related to the case. (Read more on this case here)

“The 11 defendants charged were allegedly involved in either the kidnapping and resulting death of Jolene Walker Campbell or with threatening witnesses and concealing evidence to cover up their crimes,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Clint Johnson.

Someone discovered Campbell’s body on July 15, 2020, in a remote field in Mayes County, Oklahoma within the boundaries of the Muscogee Nation. Authorities allege the kidnapping and resulting death happened between July 4 and 5, 2020.

According to the indictment, the defendants conspired with one another and others to kidnap the victim. They suspected she was a federal informant.

In the most recent indictment, attorneys charged brothers Tre Robert Allan Ackerson and Lane Ryan Bronson along with Jacob Ryan Scribner and Kimberly Kay Grissom in the case.

Pittsburg man on probation now faces another stolen car charge

CRAWFORD COUNTY, Mo. – Authorities release more information after arresting two Pittsburg residents in a stolen car pursuit. The male suspect was on probation for stealing a vehicle.

(Previous Article: Stolen car pursuit starts in Crawford County, ends in Missouri)

The chase happened on Thursday, September 30, 2021, shortly before 1:00 p.m. A Crawford County Sheriff’s deputy tried to initiate a traffic stop on a suspected stolen vehicle. The driver took off.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, “During the pursuit, the driver nearly struck a Deputy who had exited his vehicle to deploy tire deflation devices. A short time after that, the driver in attempt to avoid another deployment of tire deflating devices, almost collided with another Deputies patrol vehicle.”

The chase went into Barton County for about an hour and ended in a bean field.

Once they stopped, authorities immediately apprehended the suspects. They took both people to the Barton County, Missouri jail. Kansas authorities will pursue criminal charges in Crawford County for the Kansas side of the pursuit. Charges authorities are requesting include aggravated assault on LEO, fleeing and attempting to elude, and numerous other traffic violations.

The Crawford County Sheriff’s Office says the driver was Justin Cochran, 29, of Pittsburg, Kansas. Other criminal court cases list his residence as Asbury, Missouri. In addition to requested charges in Thursday’s chase, Cochran had an active warrant for his arrest for a parole violation.

The female suspect had no active warrants. Prosecutors have not officially charged her at this time. She’s a 22-year-old Pittsburg resident.

Authorities say the vehicle was a stolen 2020 Nissan Altima from Joplin.

Barton County Sheriff’s Office and Frontenac Police both assisted with the pursuit.

Criminal History related to a Stolen Car

Justin Cochran has a history of charges and convictions related to car theft.

Recently, he was arrested in January 2021 for stolen property in Cherokee County, Kansas. “Deputies recovered various items including a Ford Truck, which had been reported stolen out of Barton County, Missouri, as well as a handgun and other property reported stolen out of Jasper County.  In addition to the stolen property, suspected methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia were also seized,” stated Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves.

In March 2021, authorities arrested him in Vernon County, Missouri. Three months later, he pleaded guilty to stealing a motor vehicle and property theft. The courts gave him a 7 year suspended sentence and put him on 5 years supervised probation. In August, he violated his probation. Authorities got a warrant for him on August 30.

The female suspect in Thursday’s chase also has ongoing cases. One in Cherokee County, Kansas and another for tampering with a motor vehicle in Missouri.

USDA confirms COVID in deer, Missouri to also test deer

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The USDA today confirmed the first SARS-CoV-2 infection in wild white-tailed deer. These are the first deer confirmed with the virus worldwide.

The National Veterinary Services Laboratories joined the U.S. Department of Agriculture in today’s announcement. The deer came out of Ohio.

Officials did add that previous studies found that deer can be experimentally infected with the virus. They also previously learned that some wild deer had antibodies to the virus.

According to the USDA, there is no evidence of deer dying from it or humans contracting it from eating venison. The USDA is still learning about SARS-CoV-2 in animals. Based on the information available, the agency says the risk of animals spreading the virus to people is considered to be low.

Samples from the deer tested presumptive positive at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. The University collected them between January and March 2021 as part of ongoing deer damage management activities. They didn’t report any deer showing clinical signs of infection.

SARS-CoV-2 is the virus that causes COVID-19.

Testing Animals

Organizations and agencies have reported SARS-CoV-2 in a small number of animal species worldwide. The infections were mostly in animals that had close contact with a person with COVID-19. According to the USDA, at this time, they don’t recommend routine testing of animals.

State, Tribal, local and territorial animal health and public health officials plan to work with the USDA and CDC to determine if animals should be tested. They are using a One Health approach to make the determination.

Missouri: Covid in deer

The Missouri Department of Conservation plans to test hundreds of deer for the coronavirus. They will test deer killed this upcoming hunting season.

The Missouri Department of Conservation’s website states that deer hunting season for archery has already started. It runs through November 12, 2021.

Youth hunters can hunt with firearms in Missouri starting October 30, 2021. The firearm season for adult hunters starts on November 13, 2021.

USDA Covid in Deer results

The U.S. Department of Agriculture reported the results of a federal study testing white-tailed deer in Illinois, Michigan, New York and Pennsylvania.

Samples showed at least 7% of the population having antibodies for the virus that causes COVID-19. The highest population showed 67% in Michigan.

The USDA report shows that although deer were carrying the antibodies, none of them actually fell ill.

The department will announce cases of confirmed SARS-CoV-2 in animals when it’s found in a new species. They will post confirmed cases in animals here.

People with COVID and Animals

According to the USDA, people with COVID-19 can spread the virus to animals during close contact. “It is important for people with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 to avoid contact with pets and other animals to protect them from possible infection,” states the agency.

You can find more information on how to prevent the spread of Covid between people and wildlife here.

The CDC also provides information on COVID-19 in aminals and recommendations for pet owners. You can find that here.

Should you test your animals? The CDC and USDA have also provided that information on their websites.
