Car swept off roadway by rushing waters, Golden City Fire and Jasper Fire rescue driver

JASPER COUNTY, Mo. — Nearly 8 inches of rain in a 36-hour period across the Joplin region. Early Thursday morning a vehicle washed off road in extreme NE portion of the county.

What could be called a runoff creek at State Route K/Thorn Road and CR75.

Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop D states in a release of information, “The roadway the patrol vehicle is on was under water when the car in the creek tried to drive through. It doesn’t take much water to sweep a car off the roadway.”

Flooding is Missouri’s deadliest severe weather hazard. The vast majority of fatalities occur during flash flooding and affect people in vehicles. You should NEVER drive into floodwater, no matter how shallow it may appear. Flooding can damage roads and bridges in ways that may not be readily apparent.” — MISSOURI SEMA

Troopers tell us they responded to an unknown crash Thursday morning however it was already wrapped in tape, meaning First Responders had already been on scene. And we learn later it was Golden City Fire and Jasper Fire & Rescue.

We spoke to the driver. The adult male said it happened about 12:30 a.m. In the complete blackness of night and heavy rain he never saw the creek across the road.

Jasper Fire Chief J.R. Good updates information, that his dept responded as mutual aid to Golden City Fire. The male driver was holding onto a tree in the swift water.

The water was too swift to use boats, so with Golden City Fire on the east side and Jasper Fire on the west side they performed a rope rescue and were able to secure the driver and get him out of the water.

The driver did not require transport to a hospital.

Scenes like the ones below are easily avoidable. Unfortunately, these scenes were repeated many times around our area this morning.  Any amount of water over the roadway is dangerous. Do not drive into the water,” Troop D reminds.
