Joplin has a new home for arts and entertainment

After over a decade of planning, passion, and work — and a solid year and a half of building — the Harry M. Cornell Arts and Entertainment Complex reaches completion. The venue houses The Beshore Performance Hall, The Legget and Platt Green, welcome desk and gift shop and so much more.

Emily Frankoski, director of Connect2Culture — Joplin’s community arts agency — talked with KOAM’s Janna Hautala about the venue and what the community can expect in terms of artists and performers from not just the Four States, but from around the nation as well. The complex also plans to work with area schools to arrange for students to attend previews for shows. She also stressed that having such a venue will provide an opportunity for kids to be exposed to the arts without having to travel long distances.

Heather Lesmeister, executive director of the Spiva Center for the Arts, expressed her excitement for what the Cornell Complex means to the Spiva Center. Now under one bright and shiny new roof, Spiva also has a home to display the works of local artists and serve as a venue to help those artists sell and promote their work. The venue will also host a permanent art collection.

The Harry M. Cornell Arts and Entertainment Complex will provide a sophisticated level of arts, entertainment, culture and education right here in the Four States that normally wouldn’t be found outside of a major city…right her in the heart of Joplin.

The Harry M. Cornell Arts and Entertainment Complex opens to the public on Saturday, November 12.

Missouri marijuana legalization already has some Kansas police concerned

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Missouri voters said yes to legalizing marijuana on Tuesday, but one Kansas City area police department is already raising a red flag.

The unofficial vote on Amendment 3 was closer than what experts predicted, but marijuana legalization garnered about 53% support Tuesday.

“I think Missouri today is a better place based on the fact that we actually have legalized recreational marijuana,” Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas said.

Missouri is now one of 21 states, as well as Washington D.C., to legalize marijuana in the United States.

The new amendment changes the state constitution to allow those 21 and older to possess up to 3 ounces of marijuana and have up to six flowering plants, six clones and six seedlings.

The Missouri Department of Health previously said the earliest people will be able to buy recreational marijuana in Missouri is February, but across the state line in Kansas, police are already concerned.

“I think so,” KCK Police Chief Karl Oakman said when asked if he think marijuana legalization will make officers’ jobs harder. “I think we’re going to have an increase in some traffic-related issues … It’s legal in Missouri, but it’s still illegal in Kansas.”

Kansas state lawmakers have failed to approve a medical marijuana bill multiple times. It’s one of only three states that has not implemented any kind of public-use marijuana program.

Oakman said education around driving while high must be a top priority for Missouri leaders.

Lucas said it’s time for Kansas to follow in Missouri’s footsteps and legalize marijuana.

Regardless, employers will still have the final say on whether their employees can use marijuana. The new amendment does not prevent employers from enforcing their drug and alcohol-free workplace policies.

The AFGE Local 910 union president also told FOX4 this has no impact on federal employees because there is still a federal ban on the drug.

The amendment will, however, erase past marijuana-related convictions for nonviolent offenders and those whose conviction didn’t include selling to minors or driving while high.

“I think that this will reduce substantial harms, particularly those for minority communities who have been arrested at disproportionate rates for years and years,” Lucas said. “I think this is good.”

Hunting safety for the season

JOPLIN, Mo – For many in the 4-States, the end of the year means it’s primetime hunting season.

The Missouri Office of Conservation is encouraging all hunters to have what they call “a hunting plan” to stay safe.

“The biggest thing we say is to make a hunting plan,” said Tim Smith, Administrative Assistant for the Missouri Department of Consercation. “List where you’re going, who your hunting with, what time you’re going to be back. Phone numbers of your phone number as well as phone numbers that everybody has with you. So in case something happens, they have a contact information for the people that’s in that hunting. They know the location of where you’ll be hunting at. So if for some reason somebody needs to come out and look for you, I don’t know where to start.”

In the event of an emergency, smith says to call 911. However, if you don’t have cell service use a standard s-o-s signal.

“International symbol of distress is three of anything, and that can be three shots, three blows of a whistle, three rifle shots, three of anything,” Smith added.

Sunshine Lamp Trolley to suspend services beginning Nov. 28

JOPLIN, Mo. – The City of Joplin today announced a reduction of public transportation options for Joplin residents starting Nov. 28.

At that time, the Sunshine Lamp Trolley service will be suspended until further notice and riders will be referred to the MAPS service that provides curb-to-curb service.

City officials say the change comes due to a shortage of drivers.

“It is unfortunate that we have to reduce this service,” said City Manager Nick Edwards. “We are working to increase our applicant pool by working with area schools and training facilities that teach these skills to individuals. Although the stringent qualifications, as well as the low unemployment rate, are a challenge, we are focusing our efforts to allow us to renew the Trolley Service when conditions are more favorable.”

MAPS service is currently available in Joplin, Carterville, Webb City, Duenweg, Oronogo, and Duquesne.
