KDOT announces bid approval for local highway projects

PITTSBURG, Kan. – The Kansas Department of Transportation announced that bids were recently approved for local state highway construction projects.

Bids were approved on November 16 in Topeak, according to the press release from KDOT.

The following projects were approved:

  • Bourbon ‑ K‑39, bridge over Owl Creek located 2.14 miles east of the east K‑3 junction, bridge replacement, Bridges Inc., Newton, Kansas, $1,992,442.43.
  • Bourbon ‑ K‑3, bridge over Paint Creek located 1.58 miles north of the Crawford County line, bridge replacement, Bridges Inc., Newton, Kansas, $1,824,955.40.
  • Crawford ‑ K‑47, from the Neosho/Crawford county line east to the west city limits of Girard, recycle and overlay, 12.5 miles, Bettis Asphalt & Construction Inc., Topeka, Kansas, $3,520,005.77.
  • Neosho ‑ K‑47, from the west city limits of St. Paul east to the Neosho/Crawford county line, recycle and overlay, 5.5 miles, Bettis Asphalt & Construction Inc., Topeka, Kansas, $1,765,476.74.
  • Neosho ‑ K‑47, beginning at the U.S. 169/K‑47 junction east to the north U.S. 59/K‑47 junction, overlay, 11.1 miles, Bettis Asphalt & Construction Inc., Topeka, Kansas, $2,863,827.07.
  • Allen ‑ Bridge over stream, located 1.0 mile south and 2.0 miles east of Carlyle, bridge replacement, 0.1 mile, J & J Contractors Inc., Iola, Kansas, $235,798.30.
  • Montgomery ‑ Bridge over Illinois Creek, located 2.0 miles north and 0.1 mile west of Havana, bridge replacement, 0.1 mile, B & B Bridge Company LLC, St. Paul, Kansas, $988,276.50.

Local museum celebrates its namesake in Fort Scott

FORT SCOTT, Kan. – The Gordon Parks Museum in Fort Scott, Kansas is today celebrating the anniversary of Gordon Parks Birthday.

To do so, officials say the museum is hosting several events throughout the day such as:

  • 8:00 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. — Gordon Parks Museum will be open for extended hours.
  • 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. — Showing of the film Criterion Collection The Learning Tree.
  • 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. — “Langston Hughes & Gordon Parks Story Board” (Lunch and Learn Event)
  • 1:30 p.m. – 3:15 p.m. – Showing of the film Leadbelly.
  • 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. — “Digital Photography Workshop” Veretta Cobler, Professional Photographer

The Gordon Parks Museum says all films, workshops and presentations are free to the public.

New memorial honors victims of the 2011 Joplin Tornado

JOPLIN, Mo. – Active Lifestyle Events Inc. today unveiled and dedicated a Joplin Memorial Sculpture that honors the victims of the 2011 Joplin Tornado.

Officials say the artwork, located at the Harry M. Cornell Arts & Entertainment Complex, features the names of the 161 residents who lost their lives on May 22nd, 2011.

“This sculpture captures our organizations dream of providing something significant to the community that also honors those we lost on May 22nd, 2011. This beautiful sculpture not only honors them, but the banner depicted recognizes the role the runners played in helping this happen. It is a fantastic piece of art, placed on the lawn of our arts and entertainment center that will lead our city into the future,” said Audie Dennis, Active Lifestyle Events, Inc. President

ALE Inc. hosted the dedication at 10:00 a.m.

Joplin lights up its Holiday Tree Trail attraction

JOPLIN, Mo. – Joplin is continuing a new holiday tradition at Mercy Park this year.

The Holiday Tree Trail returns and many local businesses are decorating trees that guests can view during park hours.

On the evening of Nov. 29, the City lit 40 decorated trees along the park’s trail and guests enjoyed performances by Karen’s Dance Studio students.

Furthermore, Joplin Parks and Recreation Department, in partnership with Mercy, will be hosting the third annual Roll-n-Stroll Activity Challenge during the same time as the Holiday Tree Trail.

Joplin’s City Hall lights up its Holiday-Themed window

JOPLIN, Mo. – The City of Joplin is officially in the holiday spirit as City Hall’s holiday windows are now lit.

Visit Joplin installed a stained glass window that features a scenic view of a winter wonderland.

The three-pane painted vinyl panels resemble a stained-glass effect and complement the windows from last year.

Officials say the artwork on display features local muralist Sandrea Pemberton.

BBB gives tips for Giving Tuesday donations

PITTSBURG, Kan. – The Better Business Bureau is encouraging donors to give to charities as part of their holiday preparations.

Because tomorrow is Giving Tuesday, the BBB is offering tips to help residents give wisely.

“Try to go with an organization that you recognize,” said Pamela Hernandez with the BBB. ” Sometimes intentionally or not, charities will pick a name that’s similar to a well-known charity. That could be an indication of a scam or just could be somebody with good intentions who went the wrong way and didn’t do their research.”

Officials say to never succumb to reassure by giving up money on the spot and to ask for more information if needed.

Follow these tips:

  1. Don’t assume that charity size and regional scope signal trustworthiness. 67 percent of survey respondents said they trust local charities more than national and 62 percent trust small organizations more than large ones. In BBB’s Give.org experience, however, charities of all sizes and scope can demonstrate good and bad accountability practices.
  2. Don’t assume verifying trust is easy. The Give.org Donor Trust Report shows that younger generations are more likely than older donors to believe that verifying trust is easy and can be accomplished by examining the charity’s appeal alone. Verifying charity trustworthiness is more complex. Donors are encouraged to check out charities at Give.org to verify if they meet the 20 BBB Standards for Charity Accountability which address charity governance, finances, results reporting and solicitation practices.
  3. Don’t rely on stories and passion alone in assessing trust. The survey results also indicate that 46 percent of Generation Z (ages 18 and 19) and 32 percent of Millennials (ages 20-36) tend to attribute trust to those organizations that demonstrate more apparent passion and sincerity in the appeal. In BBB’s Give.org view, such indicators are not a reliable means to verify trust and could lead younger donors vulnerable to questionable solicitations.
  4. Don’t focus excessively on financial ratios. While financial ratios are an important part of a charity’s overall picture, excessive focus on low overhead spending can be misguided and potentially harmful to an organization’s capacity for service. Consider a more comprehensive view of a charity’s activities in order to make a wise giving decision.

Freeman discusses health care options for lower-income families

JOPLIN, Mo. – Freeman Health System is helping locals get the right health insurance for themselves and their families thanks to a new law.

This year, Employees who cannot afford health care plans from their employer that include the entire family are allowed to enroll in the Affordable Care Act.

Officials say the affordable rate is 9.5 percent of applicants’ income.

That being said, health insurance that exceeds 9.5 percent of income is considered unaffordable and the person can get tax credits from the ACA.

Local town is host a Holiday Zumbathon event

PITTSBURG, Kan. – The Pittsburg Parks and Recreation are hosting a Holiday Zumbathon to benefit communities in local schools.

This event will take place on December 3rd from 9:30-11:30 a.m. at the Lincoln Center.

Officials say all the donations made will go to community students in need.

The donations that are accepted are:

  • Socks
  • Underwear
  • Gloves
  • Hats
  • Scarves

They ask that all of to donations be in youth sizes.

Admission to the event is donation based.

Local Train Show and Swap Meet leaves the station

JOPLIN, Mo. – The Joplin History & Mineral Museum is hosting its annual Train Show and Swap Meet today.

The event brings together model train enthusiasts from across the 4-States and all proceeds at the door benefit the local museum.

Admission is $5 a person and children under 12 years of age are free to attend the event.

Officials with the museum say there are over 55 tables featuring model train items and accessories for sale including multiple model train displays set up for your entertainment.

The event runs from 9:00 A.M. – 3:00 P.M.

Food truck services are available in the designated parking areas.

Local fishing team preps for tournament; reacts to cheating

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Kan. – Some local fishermen are gearing up for their next tournament at Lake Hartwell in South Carolina.

KOAM’s Keri Worthen met up with Levi Snow, his son Lee, and his friend Ben Hodgson today at a pit in Cherokee County, Kansas.

Levi and Lee make up a father-and-son team with the Columbus Bass Club.

“Well I spend time with my dad, I have fun and that’s it,” says Lee.

However, the next fishing tournament requires a person to be 16 or older. So, Ben is preparing with Levi for the National Bass Team Championship.

Levi says, “Basically, a tournament for all the teams trails across the United States and they send their best team to this tournament and whoever wins this tournament moves on to the bass master classic.”

Snow says a lot of preparation, money, and time goes into getting ready for a tournament.

Keri asked Levi what he thought about the recent cheating that went on with the walleye fish at Lake Erie.

“To me that is terrible because everybody else spends all this time that went into this, you spend hours prepping for a tournament like this then somebody just throws weights down and that is just unethical. You also putting lost of money on the line too, it’s not just the time,” Levi told Keri.
