KBI investigates homicide in rural Allen County

ALLEN COUNTY – The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) and the Allen County Sheriff’s Office are investigating after a man was found dead in the shop outside of his home in rural La Harpe, Kansas.

The Allen County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the KBI on Wednesday, May 4.

Authorities say on Tuesday morning, May 3, at around 9:55 a.m., the Allen County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a subject who had located a deceased family member.

When deputies arrived at 1255 2400th St. in La Harpe, they discovered the body of 68-year-old Richard Diehl, of La Harpe. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

An autopsy was performed. The preliminary autopsy results indicated that the manner of Diehl’s death was homicide.

The investigation is ongoing. Authorities do not believe a threat to the public exists related to this crime.

Burglary Investigation at Old Seneca Milnot Building

SENECA, Mo.—Authorities are investigating a suspected burglary at the old Milnot Plant in Seneca. Officials received a call around four Thursday afternoon that someone had broken into the building. Investigators from Newton and Ottawa County Sheriff’s Offices, as well as the Seneca Police Department responded. After searching the building, officials did not find a suspect inside. Officials tell us it appears the break-in happened on the Oklahoma side of the building, so the investigation will be handled by the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.

Carthage CVB under investigation over money issues

CARTHAGE, Mo. — Authorities are looking into whether the Carthage C.V.B. broke the law in how it spends its money.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating the Convention and Visitors Bureau in Carthage after allegations of the misappropriation of funds.

It started with the Carthage city council, which has started an independent forensic audit of C.V.B. finances and cancelled the city contract with the agency.

City motel/hotel taxes support that agreement, generally worth more than $100,000 per year.

Joplin crews battle early morning house fire

JOPLIN, Mo. – Joplin Fire Department responded to a report of a house fire at 2421 S Florida Ave around 4:00 a.m. Wednesday. The lone occupant of the home escaped without serious injury.

When crews arrived, they found a single-story wood frame house showing flames and smoke. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire. However, there was moderate heat and smoke damage throughout the residence.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
