I-49 crash near Tipton Ford, Mo.; Slow vehicle rear-ended at highway speeds

NEWTON COUNTY, Mo. — Just after noon on Thursday reports of a crash along I-49 north of the Gateway exit alerted Newton County Central Dispatch.

Redings Mill Fire, Newton Co Deputies, Newton Co Ambulance responded emergency. Missouri State Highway Patrol and MoDOT Emergency Response were notified.

On scene we learn two vehicles involved and an unknown number injured.

Missouri State Highway Patrol tell us one rear-ended another at highway speeds, both were in the northbound lanes.

The crash location is I-49 north of Tipton Ford in northbound lanes, mile marker 34.8.

Metro Towing removed both vehicles from the crash scene. Traffic was flowing as normal about 80 minutes after the crash.

I-49 wrong-way crash, “several casualties”, Missouri State Highway Patrol state

CASS COUNTY, Mo. – Shortly after 1:15 p.m. Monday afternoon reports of a wrong-way driver alerted authorities along I-49 near Harrisonville.  The wrong-way driver resulted in a multi-vehicle crash and several casualties according to Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The detour is State Route J in Peculiar, Mo. as all I-49 southbound traffic is exiting.

“The southbound lanes of I-49 have been closed to all traffic near 161.2 mm, before State Hwy 291.” MoDOT state in a tweet. However hey updated information again just before 3 p.m.

“Breaking/Traffic Alert: SB I-49 @ MM 161.2 near Harrisonville in Cass County is closed due to a multiple vehicle crash. Investigators are reportedly re-creating the scene. Plz find an alternate route. Posted at 2:56pm.” – MODOT

Local authorities, Harrsonville, Mo. Police Dept state, “Officers have closed ALL southbound lanes of Interstate 49 from J Highway (Peculiar) to the MO-291 Highway exit, due to a fatality crash involving multiple vehicles. We expect the interstate to be closed for multiple hours.”

Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop A Major Crash Investigation Team was summoned to the scene.

Part of I-49 to close during concrete replacement project

JASPER COUNTY, Mo. – Segments of I-49 will close to traffic beginning on April 5 while MoDOT replaces the concrete pavement between I-44 and a point south of Jasper County Route FF (32nd Street) in Joplin. The closing could last for up to 16 days.

Contractor crews will remove and replace 1.4 miles of concrete pavement beginning in the southbound lanes. Both lanes of traffic will be closed in each direction ’round the clock. When that work is complete, the southbound lanes will be reopened to traffic and crews will move to the northbound lanes. Both northbound lanes will be closed ‘round the clock.

Traffic Impacts:

  • Phase 1:
    • All lanes of southbound I-49 CLOSED ’round the clock for up to 16 days for pavement replacement
    • All lanes of northbound I-49 open
  • Phase 2:
    • All lanes of northbound I-49 CLOSED ‘round the clock for up to 16 days for pavement replacement
    • All lanes of southbound I-49 open
  • Route FF (32nd Street) ramps will be CLOSED in the direction of the work being done
  • Expect increased travel times
  • Drivers will be directed to signed detour using Business Loop 49, I-44 and Missouri Route 59

JPD issuing alert due to emergency road conditions

***EMERGENCY ROAD CONDITIONS IN EFFECT***

Due to deteriorating road and driving conditions, the Joplin Police Department is officially going to Emergency Road Conditions. JPD has worked 5 vehicle crashes and currently have 8 crashes holding and are continuing to receive calls on additional crashes. During emergency road conditions officers will not be responding to non-injury crashes. Drivers will have to exchange information. We ask that everyone please stay off the road if at all possible. If you have to venture out, please drive with extreme caution.

There is also a multi-vehicle pile up on 171 in the Southbound lanes just northeast of Carterville.

As of 4:30pm MODOT shows there are 23 incidents impacting travel.
