News To Know: fallen hero, Halloween safety

BARRY COUNTY, Mo. – The Missouri State Highway Patrol has charged a suspect they say is responsible for the hit-and-run death of an Aurora, Missouri man. The crash occurred on July 15, 2022, on Farm Road 1180. Authorities say they have probable cause to believe Derek Christopher Coburn, 19, is responsible for the collision. A warrant has been issued and police are requesting the following charges:

  • Murder 2nd Degree – Felony Murder
  • Flight From Officers – Drug Perpetration
  • Leaving Scene Of Accident – Accident Resulting In Death
  • Tampering With Motor Vehicle – 1st Degree

PITTSBURG, Kan.– Halloween is almost here and kids will be heading out the door to collect candy. According to Pittsburg Chief of Police, Ben Anderson, it’s important to have reflectors if wearing all dark clothing. He also reminds kids to only go to houses that are well lit, or where people sit in the front. Chief Anderson says they haven’t found any suspicious goods, but parents should still check their children’s candy to make sure it is safe to eat. He also recommends walking in familiar groups.

MISSOURI – Those for and against the legalization of recreational marijuana in Missouri are speaking out. On November 8th Missourians will vote on Amendment 3. If passed, the constitutional amendment will remove state prohibitions on purchasing, possessing, consuming, using, delivering, manufacturing and selling marijuana for personal use for adults over the age of 21. Some marijuana crimes could also be expunged from criminal records.

MCDONALD COUNTY, Mo. – McDonald County High School honored a fallen hero by dedicating a memorial highway. Christopher Lee Marion graduated from McDonald County High School in 2005 before joining the US army. In February 2006, Private First Class Marion was killed while on patrol in Iraq when his military vehicle hit a roadside bomb.

Chas Kiulkowsi from the Cadaver Zone stepped back into the studio to talk to KOAM’s Chris Warner…and he brought some guests. Two of the Cadaver Zone crew members — Harley and Isabella — sat down to show Chris how quick and easy, and super effective, their makeup techniques are. Harley hit the studio in full makeup, and in less than five minutes she applied a quick and realistic bruise to Isabella. Joplin Empire Market is celebrating Halloween

JOPLIN, Mo. — The Joplin Empire Market is celebrating Halloween with events for the whole family.

Saturday morning the market had a petting zoo with baby goats, alpacas and a flemish giant rabbit.

The community garden was decked out with homemade zombie scarecrows and vendors were handing out candy to kids.

“We are a weekly farmers market, but we are also are just really passionate about building community and engaging the community. And being a gathering place for people to come and feel welcomed,” said Lindsay Gagnon, Joplin Empire Market Director.

Saturday night the market hosted its first night market of the year called “Cauldrons & Cocktails

There were artisan vendors, creepy cocktails and a costume contest for kids and adults.

The Carthage Humane Society is halting black cat adoptions

CARTHAGE, Mo. — The Carthage Humane Society is halting the adoption of black cats this month.

The no-kill animal shelter says they are stopping those adoptions because they find more black cats are harmed around Halloween.

The shelter says they have done this for years to keep cats safe.

“It’s been a tradition for a long time that people get into the witchcraft thing and black magic and Satan and they want to get the black cats and torture them and use them in sacrifices and stuff like that. So we want to keep them out of their hands and becoming a good pet for somebody,” said James Linder, Carthage Humane Society Manager.

Anyone interested in adopting a black cat can fill out a pre-adoption form and pick them up on November first.

5th Annual Great Boo Fest Cruise In

JOPLIN, Mo. — Families were getting a jump start on Halloween in Joplin.

Saturday night “Car Buddies” held their the 5th annual “Great Boo Fest Cruise in” at Freddy’s on Rangeline.

To celebrate the groups last cruise of the season families dressed up in costume and kids went from car to car Trick-or-treating through the parking lot.

“It’s growing each time for the kids the trick-or-treating part of it. This year its bigger than it has been,” said Carol Buck, Car Buddies.

Car buddies gave out trophies for the most decorated car, as well as the best adult and children’s costume.

Fireworks shop hosts fall festival

CARTHAGE, Mo. — A local fireworks shop was transformed into a festival for the whole family.

Hale fireworks in Carthage held its 4th annual fall festival.

The free event had game for the kids including a pumpkin ring toss, pumpkin bowling, gourd tossing and photo opportunities.

Hale’s says they sell a lot of specialty pumpkins this week for families wanting to decorate for the Maple Leaf Festival.

“They are excited when they come in and our customers from the fireworks season and they say oh yay we can get the fireworks too. They say it’s a good combination pumpkins and fireworks. I work at the school during the day and I love giving back to the community having a fun event for them to come out and have family time,” said Stacy Barton, Hale Pumpkins

Hale’s will continue selling pumpkins leading up to Halloween.
