Volunteers clean up historic Peace Church Cemetery

JOPLIN, Mo. – The Peace Church Cemetery Group spent Saturday morning working to preserve an historic cemetery.

The group got together around 8:00 a.m. for their spring cleanup day, calling on anyone who wanted to help to bring their lawn tools and help preserve the historic cemetery. Some of the work included picking up limbs and rocks, leveling low graves and setting markers.

“Well this is just one of those historic cemeteries that we’ve adopted to try and make a difference in the community and make it look like something,” said Jim Beeler of the Peace Church Cemetery Association. “It was very overgrown, undergrowth, bushes and trees and shrubs and things that somebody had just abandoned over the years. And this is one of those things we wanted to try and do to make sure it looks decent for the community.”

The cemetery was founded in 1840 and is the second oldest in Jasper County.

Church group keeps connected through axe throwing

JOPLIN, Mo. – For anyone looking to try out a new sport or hobby, axe throwing may be just the thing.

That’s what the women’s group from the Light in Joplin thought. They went axe throwing at TommyHawks Four States. One member, Rachel Grindle says it was a great way to safely support a local business.

“Just really saying we want to prioritize our relationships with one another and really wanna be together in safe ways,” said Grindle. “But to really support local businesses and support getting to know one another as well.”

She says they’ve been trying to stay connected with each other through the pandemic, and axe throwing happened to be a great way to do that.
