177 years ago this month, in 1845, dragoon soldiers left Fort Scott for an expedition along the Oregon Trail. Joining them were dragoon soldiers from Fort Leavenworth. The purpose of the expedition was to meet with native American tribes along the route, provide an escort for emigrants travelling the trail, and to put a military force near Oregon in case of a war with Great Britain over ownership of Oregon Territory. Soldiers on the expedition travelled an impressive 2200 miles in just 99 days!” One of the many factoids you can learn while visiting the #FortScottNPS

SEK landmark working to increase access

FORT SCOTT, Ks. — A Southeast Kansas landmark is trying to make its location more accessible.

The Fort Scott National Historic Site is in the process of redesigning its virtual experience. It’s released a survey to the community to help track the ways people visit the park in person or online, as well as tracking online habits.

The hope is for the site to make the virtual experience as realistic as possible.

Fly The Flags Project returns to Fort Scott for 3rd year

FORT SCOTT, Ks — One Southeast Kansas town is preparing to get a little more patriotic.

The Friends of Fort Scott National Historic Site has begun its annual Fly The Flags Project. For the rest of the month the organization will be taking orders from homes and businesses to hang flags on five different flag holidays. All funds raised from this will go directly to helping the Fort Scott National Historic Site.

Reed Hartford, Friends of Fort Scott NHS President, said, “It has been really successful, we’re putting out over 100 flags on those five holidays.”

This is the third year of the Fly The Flags Project. If you’re in Fort Scott and would like to participate you can sign up by using a form at the Fort Scott Area Chamber of Commerce.
