Man Pleads Guilty: Robbed Bank While Wearing Ankle Monitor from Another Case

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – A man who was wearing a court-ordered ankle monitor at the time of the offense pleaded guilty in federal court last week to robbing a Bank of America branch in Springfield last summer.

Michael C. Loyd, 30, of Springfield, pleaded guilty before U.S. Chief Magistrate Judge David P. Rush to one count of bank robbery.

By pleading guilty, Loyd admitted he stole $754 from Bank of America at 633 W. Kearney in Springfield on July 20, 2022. Loyd approached a bank teller and handed her a note that stated, “Give Your Money Now. Don’t Say Anything. I Have A Partner Outside.” After the teller handed him the cash in her drawer, Loyd left the bank and drove away in a black Dodge Ram pickup truck.

A few minutes later, investigators received a tip that Loyd may be the bank robber and that he was currently at Lazy Acres Mobile Home Park, where the truck’s owner lived. Law enforcement officers surrounded the residence and began calling out occupants of the residence.

Investigators compared a previous booking photo of Loyd to the surveillance photos from the bank. Investigators also learned that Loyd was on ankle monitoring as part of his state probation. LBS Monitoring confirmed that their tracking data indicated Loyd’s ankle monitor was inside the Bank of America at the time of the robbery.

Loyd surrendered to law enforcement and admitted to robbing the bank. He told investigators that, as he was driving away from the bank, he saw patrol cars with their lights activated driving in the direction of the bank. He became scared and started throwing money out the window of the truck. Loyd didn’t know how much of the money he disposed of, because he didn’t know how much money he had stolen.

Under federal statutes, Loyd is subject to a sentence of up to 20 years in federal prison without parole. The maximum statutory sentence is prescribed by Congress and is provided here for informational purposes, as the sentencing of the defendant will be determined by the court based on the advisory sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors. A sentencing hearing will be scheduled after the completion of a presentence investigation by the United States Probation Office.

This case was investigated by the Springfield, Mo., Police Department and the FBI. Information provided by U.S. Attorney’s office Western District of Missouri.

Person of interest named in deaths of 4 men on bicycles

OKMULGEE, Okla. – The four men who have now been missing a week were positively identified by the Oklahoma Medical Examiner on Monday, October 17, 2022. The families of the four missing men; Mark ChastainBilly ChastainMike Sparks and Alex Stevens were notified.

Sheriff Prentice of Okmulgee Police Dept states during a press conference Monday afternoon that two pieces of property were searched including a salvage yard and an adjoining property.  He says on that adjoining property evidence of a violent event occurred.

1205 West 20th, Okmulgee, Okla. one of two locations that police searched. They found no evidence on the property.  However they say evidence of a violent event occurred on an adjoining property.

He also stated the four men had been dismembered when their bodies were located in the Deep Fork River on Friday, October 14, 2022.

Based on information obtained during the course of the investigation we believe the men planned to commit some type of criminal act when they left the residence on W 6th Street. That is based on information supplied by a witness who reports they were invited to go with the men to ‘hit a lick big enough for all of them.’ We do not know what they planned or where they planned to do it. Task Force Officers continue to investigate and will do so until all leads are exhausted. A very methodical search was conducted Saturday at the Salvage Yard on 20th Street as well as surrounding properties. Nothing remarkable was observed inside the salvage yard but evidence of a violent event was discovered on an adjoining property. The owner of both salvage yards, Joe Kennedy, is considered a person of interest, but no charges have been filed. Investigators would like to speak with him again. Mr. Kennedy was reported missing Saturday night and may be suicidal.  He is last believed to be driving a blue Chrylser PT Cruiser bearing Oklahoma license LSA-245. During the missing person portion of the investigation we were very liberal with release of information. Once the investigation changed to a Murder investigation we will be much more conservative to protect the integrity of the investigation.” – Statement from Sheriff Prentice

Agencies who have assisted in the investigation thus far include: Okmulgee County District Attorney’s Violent Crime Task Force, OSBI, Oklahoma Highway Patrol Boat Team, Lighthorse Police, FBI, Okmulgee Fire Dept, Okmulgee Emergency Management and City of Okmulgee Emergency Management.

The Okmulgee Police ask if anyone has any information or knows the whereabouts of Joe Kennedy to contact your local authorities or call 918-756-3511 or email tips@okmcity.net

The Sharp Road Bridge over the Deep Fork River southwest of Okmulgee is where the dismembered bodies were recovered Friday.

TULSA, Okla. — Five defendants who threatened or harmed witnesses in attempts to thwart a federal investigation into the kidnapping and killing of a Joplin, Mo. woman have pleaded guilty in federal court, announced U.S. Attorney Clint Johnson.

The body of Jolene Walker Campbell, an Osage Nation citizen, was discovered on July 15, 2020, in a remote field in Mayes County within the boundaries of the Muscogee Nation reservation. Federal prosecutors allege the kidnapping resulting in the death of Ms. Walker Campbell occurred in Joplin, Missouri, and happened sometime between July 4 and July 5, 2020.

On July 20, 2021, a total of 11 defendants from the Joplin, Missouri, area were charged in a third superseding indictment, for their various roles related to the kidnapping resulting in death conspiracy.

  • Chloe Louise Stith, 35
  • David William Morris, 35
  • Breanna Lynn Sloan, 23
  • Morgan Lee Bowman, 27
  • Sarah Michelle Humbard, 25
  • Megan Louise Detherage, 28
  • Ariel Sue Paige Divine, 30
  • Tre Robert Allen Ackerson, 28
  • Lane Ryan Bronson, 29
  • Jacob Ryan Scribner, 34
  • Kimberly Kay Grissom, 47
  • (marked bold now pleaded guilty)

Within the last month, Morgan Lee Bowman, 26; Megan Louise Detherage, 28; Sarah Michelle Humbard, 25; David William Morris, 34; and Chloe Louise Stith, 21, each pleaded guilty to acts related to witness tampering.

“The U.S. Attorney’s Office will hold accountable individuals who threaten or commit acts of violence against witnesses in an attempt to obstruct the federal criminal justice process,” said U.S. Attorney Clint Johnson. “Together, my office and our partners at the FBI will uphold our federal trust responsibility in Indian Country and work to ensure justice prevails for victim Jolene Walker Campbell and the witnesses harmed in this case.”

On May 9, 2022, Bowman, pleaded guilty to tampering with a witness, victim, and informant by using and threatening physical force (Count 7). Bowman admitted that on July 7, 2020, she and Megan Louise Detherage and Lane Ryan Bronson bound, blindfolded and kidnapped two witnesses from a Joplin home and drove them to a remote location in Seneca, Missouri, occupied by Tre Robert Allen Ackerson and Breanna Sloan. She stated that while at that location, Ackerson used a semi-automatic rifle to repeatedly shoot at one of the witnesses and told the witness to “dance.” The second witness, who was still bound and blindfolded, was forced to listen. Bowman stated that after the shooting, she, Sloan and Detherage took the witnesses personal belongings and wiped down the car used in the kidnapping with bleach with the intention of destroying DNA and fingerprint evidence. Bowman said at the time of the crime, she understood that a federal proceeding was likely to evolve in the kidnapping and killing of Ms. Walker Campbell and that they threatened the witnesses with the intent to prevent communication with law enforcement about the crimes.

Detherage pleaded guilty on May 10, 2022, to misprision of a felony. Detherage admitted that she failed to inform law enforcement about her participation in a kidnapping for the purpose of intimidating witnesses of a drug trafficking offense. On July 7, 2020, she, Bronson, Bowman, and two witnesses were present at a house in Joplin. She stated that Bronson had asked one of the witnesses to hold a quantity of methamphetamine while Bronson was away and that Bronson later accused the individual of stealing some of the drug. She stated that at Bronson’s direction, she and Bowman blindfolded the two witnesses and they drove the witnesses to a trailer in Seneca, Missouri, where Ackerson and Sloan were located. She stated that Ackerson and Bronson left with one of the witnesses, then returned and parked behind the trailer. She, Sloan and Bowman then wiped down the car used in the kidnapping with bleach at the direction of Bronson. During that time, she claimed that she heard gunshots fired in the direction of where Ackerson and one of the witnesses were located, causing the second witness to become fearful. She stated the only firearm she saw during the kidnapping was a short-barreled rifle carried by Ackerson.

Humbard and Morris each pleaded guilty to tampering with a witness, victim, and informant by using the threat of physical force (Count 11)Humbard and Morris admitted that they threatened a witness by reminding the witness of the killing of Ms. Walker Campbell and that the witness was “playing with fire.” The two further admitted to luring the witness to drive to the Precious Moments Hotel in Carthage, Missouri, where they met Bronson. Bronson allegedly demanded the witness change testimony regarding codefendant Ackerson, and if not, the witness would pay for it. Humbard pleaded guilty on April 21, 2022, and Morris pleaded guilty May 13, 2022.

Stith pleaded guilty to tampering with a witness, victim, and informant by using and threatening physical force (Count 12). Stith admitted at a May 5, 2022, plea hearing that she helped another person in a separate incident in the use of force against two other witnesses with the intention of keeping them from communicating with federal law enforcement about the kidnapping and killing of Ms. Walker Campbell. She admitted to covering the two witnesses’ eyes with duct tape and driving the witnesses against their will to a remote location where one witness was physically assaulted by the other person who had accompanied Stith. The incident occurred on Aug. 13, 2020.

Bowman, Detherage, Humbard, Morris and Stith have now been convicted. All other defendants charged in the indictment are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

Charges filed against man in Joplin bank robbery

JOPLIN, Mo. – Charges were filed against a southwest Missouri man regarding the bank robbery on Tuesday at Great Southern Bank, 1232 S Range Line Road.

The robbery and investigation details regarding the defendant Vincent Gepson, 63, are outlined in the Criminal Complaint and Probable Cause Affidavit filed in the United States District Court, Western District of Missouri.

On or about May 9, 2022, within Jasper County, in the Western District of Missouri, the defendant, VINCENT GEPSON, by force, violence, and intimidation, did take from the person or presence of another, United States currency, belonging to and in the care, custody, control, management, and possession of Great Southern Bank, a bank whose deposits were then insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 2113(a).” – Criminal Complaint

“On May 9, 2022, at approximately 10:00 a.m., the Great Southern Bank located at 1232 South Range Line Road, Joplin, Jasper County, Missouri, within the Western District of Missouri, was robbed by a then unknown subject (“UNSUB”). The UNSUB entered the bank and proceeded directly to the teller counter and demanded money. The UNSUB
informed the victim teller that he had a gun and for the teller to give him $1OO’s, $50’s and $20’s.

RELATED >> TUESDAY MORNING BANK ROBBERY, GREAT SOUTHERN BANK IN JOPLIN

The victim teller complied with the UNSUB’s demand and handed over currency in control of the bank to the UNSUB. The UNSUB placed the money in a white plastic bag that the UNSUB produced from his back pocket. After obtaining the currency, the UNSUB departed the bank through the front door. Witnesses believed that the UNSUB departed in a dark colored sport utility vehicle.

Surveillance photographs obtained from Great Southern Bank security personnel showed the UNSUB to be a white male, wearing blue jeans and a long sleeved light blue t-shirt. The UNSUB was wearing a blue surgical mask and had sunglasses pushed up on his forehead. The UNSUB had a medical bandage on the left side of his neck. The UNSUB was heavily tattooed on his hands.

After receiving the surveillance photographs from Great Southern Bank, the Joplin Police Department placed photographs of the UNSUB on their Facebook page and requested assistance from the public in identifying the UNSUB.

Later in the morning of May 9, 2022, Joplin, Missouri, Police Department (JPD) Sergeant Luke Stahl received a telephone call from an individual who identified himself as Vincent Gepson. Gepson informed Sergeant Stahl that a bank robbery suspect’s photograph had been placed on JPD’s Facebook page. Gepson informed Sergeant Stahl that although the photograph looked like him, he had not robbed the bank. Gepson informed Sergeant Stahl that he had been in Pea Ridge, Arkansas at the time of the robbery. Gepson refused to meet with Sergeant Stahl to discuss the robbery and informed Sergeant Stahl that he would only speak with Anderson, Missouri, Police Department Detective Aaron Lemon.

After speaking with Gepson, Sergeant Stahl reviewed booking photographs of Gepson from previous arrests made by the JPD. The photographs reviewed by Sergeant Stahl were similar to the UNSUB depicted in the robbery surveillance photographs. Gepson’s booking photographs clearly showed that Gepson is heavily tattooed on his hands and arms. Gepson also has a tattoo on the left side of his neck. Your affiant believes that UNSUB who robbed the Great Southern Bank was wearing the medical bandage on the left side of his neck to cover a distinctive tattoo. Your Affiant compared the booking photographs with the robbery surveillance photographs specifically focusing on the tattoos located on Gepson’s hands. Your Affiant believes that the tattoos on the UNSUB who robbed the Great Southern Bank match the tattoos observed on Gepson’s booking photographs.

On May 9, 2022, your Affiant spoke with Anderson Police Department Detective Lemon. Detective Lemon informed your Affiant that he had spoken with a female employee of the Economic Security Agency in Anderson, Missouri. This female employee informed Detective Lemon that earlier in the morning of May 9, 2022, Gepson came into her office and asked for a facial mask. Gepson informed the female that he had a medical appointment and needed a mask to visit the medical office. The female employee stated that the mask she provided Gepson was similar to the mask worn by the UNSUB who robbed the Great Southern bank at approximately 10:00 a.m. Your Affiant knows that
Gepson wears a goatee and believes that Gepson requested a facial mask in order to hide this distinctive facial feature.

Detective Lemon informed your Affiant that he was aware that Gepson has had several surgeries on his legs and that Gepson walked with a distinct limp. Based on this
information, your Affiant obtained and reviewed surveillance video from the Great Southern Bank robbery on May 9, 2022. Your Affiant was able to see that the UNSUB
who robbed the bank walked with a distinctive limp as he entered the bank.

Later in the afternoon on May 9, 2022, the JPD received a call from R&R Tire Express in Webb City, Missouri. The calling employee stated that they believed that the individual who robbed the Great Southern bank earlier that day had been at their business and made a payment in cash. Based on this information, your Affiant met with R&R Tire Express employees and learned that at approximately 10:30 a.m., Gepson had visited the store and made a $212.05 cash payment on his account. R&R Tire Express is located approximately 2.3 miles from the Great Southern Bank.”
