“Today we pay homage to to one of our officers who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Marshal Leonard S. Rich was a Webb City lawman dedicated to bringing law and order to his town.” — Service Program

On Saturday night August 10, 1902 Marshal Rich was responding to a disturbance inside Lizzie Reed’s Resort. The resort was a two-story building on Main  Street. The trouble was between the owner, Lizzie, and an Oklahoma man, Jim Gideon.

Jim Gideon and his gang had been giving some of the girls upstairs in the parlor some troubles. Lizzie wanted them to go downstairs but he refused.

The Gideon Brothers, Joe and Jim, had moved to Webb City from Oklahoma Indian Territory in December 1901. They quickly became known as dangerous men and this was not their first run-in with Marshal Rich.

Both brothers had been bragging all evening about how they were going to “get a guy” and the deed was going to take sometime around midnight. Joe would not stop talking about it and kept showing off his gun until Jim finally told him to take the gun back to the hotel room. Only Joe didn’t do it and he continued to drink.

Finally Lizzie called Marshal Rich, Marshal James, and Sam Moon, temporary police officer hired to serve during the street fair.

At first Marshal Rich tried to talk Jim down and for a while it seemed to be working until they got to the front door. That’s when a scuffle between Jim and Marshall Rich broke out. At the same time a fight was going on between Joe Gideon and Marshall James.

Shots were fired and when it was over Joe Gideon had killed Marshall Rich. Sam Moon had killed Joe Gideon and Jim Gideon had been shot through the arm. Marshall James was badly beaten but survived.

Marshall Leonard Rich was a peace officer and a family man. He married Eve May Eulitle in July 1888. They had a six year old daughter, Stella. Marshal Rich is buried in the Webb City Cemetery; his stone does not show he died in the line of duty.

October 18, 2022 a new stone was placed in front of Marshal Rich headstone to recognize his sacrifice for the people of Webb City.

Services set for Oklahoma Deputy killed in barrage of gunfire, second Deputy will recover

OKLAHOMA COUNTY, Okla. — Monday shortly after 1 p.m. three officers were serving an eviction notice and were met with gunfire. Two Deputies were struck. Sgt Bobby Swartz died a few hours later.

We learn Tuesday from the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Dept that the second officer, wounded, Deputy Mark Johns is out of surgery and recovering.

Deputy Johns was with Sgt Bobby Swartz Monday serving lock-out paperwork when a gunman opened fire with a rifle, striking Sgt. Swartz and killing him.  Deputy Johns used his body to try to shield Sgt. Swartz from the barrage of gunfire.  A round struck Deputy Johns, clipping his femoral artery.  Tuesday, doctors performed surgery to fix his artery and remove shrapnel from his abdomen.  Deputy Johns is a hero who was willing to lay down his life for his friend; a testimony to the character of both men.  Monday, as he held Sheriff Tommie Johnson’s hand, he apologized for not being able to save Bobby.  Our prayers are with Deputy Johns that he heals from the physical and emotional scars he now carries.” — OK CO SHERIFF

Tuesday evening law enforcement from around the region escorted Sgt. Bobby Swartz, to Bill Marritt Funeral Home.

Police officer killed South of St Louis is Carthage Native

BONNE TERRE, Mo. — A Missouri police officer and gunman are dead following a shootout early Thursday at a motel. A medical helicopter took another officer to the hospital for surgery.

Around 12:30 am, Bonne Terre Officer Lane Burns and Cpl. Garrett Worley responded to a disturbance at a Motel 6. That’s according to Missouri State Highway Patrol spokesperson Dallas Thompson.

Authorities say as they approached the room where the disturbance was reported, a man came out firing a handgun. He hit both officers, Thompson said. The officers returned fire, killing the man authorities later identified as James Emery, 21, of St. Louis.

“We’re still trying to piece together what he was doing in Bonne Terre,” Thompson said. “We don’t know if was just passing through for the night or if he was staying in the area for some reason.”

Burns, 30, later died at an area hospital. Thompson says Worley, 28, was undergoing surgery for a gunshot wound to the leg. Thompson didn’t know Worley’s medical condition.

“This is something that every officer fears,” Thompson had told KMOV-TV in the hours after the shooting. “They always have that in the back of their mind.”

Burns had been with the Bonne Terre department for five years, Thompson said, and Worley was a seven-year veteran of the department. He is survived by his two children and fiancée. Burns was born in Carthage and lived there through high school.

Bonne Terre is located about 50 miles southwest of St. Louis.

This is the third LEO shot and killed in the past two weeks in Missouri.

Jasper Missouri Police release the following statement on Thursday:

“Officer Burns has family in Jasper, somebody who is very close to the Jasper Police Department and is on our Citizen Volunteer Team. Our condolences go out to family.

The ‘dehumanizing’ of law enforcement is real and in full force, as an alarming number of officers are being assaulted and killed.”
