Poker run fundraiser to help cover service dog costs

PINEVILLE, Mo. – A local service dog organization is hosting a poker run fundraiser.

The Saber Life Foundation was founded by the family of a girl from Pineville, Missouri who has a debilitating condition and needed a service dog. The foundation helps cover some of the costs of getting a service dog, which can run more than 18-thousand dollars. So they are raising money through the pipes for pups poker run which will run 150 miles through Arkansas and Missouri.

“It started with our daughter, that she needed a service dog, and so we started fundraising for her at local events in our community selling dog treats,” said Saber Life President Danea Key. “And so once we were meeting so many people that needed a service dog, knew someone that needed one, or had one. We decided at that point that we wanted to pay it forward once we got our daughters service dog paid for.”

The poker run will be on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. There will be prizes including a raffle for a 2005 Harley-Davidson Road King motorcycle.

Lamar PD sends off K-9 Hondo with retirement party

LAMAR, Mo. – A long time officer with the Lamar Police Department said his final goodbyes Thursday as he headed off into retirement.

That officer is Hondo, a K-9 unit. Officials say Hondo has served for nine years and assisted in the seizure of more than a 1,000 grams of marijuana, 4,000 grams of meth, and numerous weapons. He will now live out the rest of his life at the home of his handler.

Before retiring though, Hondo was able to show his replacement Tosca the ropes.

“The good thing with that is that for the last 3 years, I have been hauling 2 dogs,” said K-9 Handler Corporal Toby Luce. “So she’s been in the car since she was 6 weeks old, so it made it easier for a transition for me, not necessarily for him but for me to be able to take just one dog. I can’t imagine what it would be like to have went cold turkey and went without a dog at all.”

Miami community shows concern for dog outside in the cold

MIAMI, Okla.  – The cold weather raises concerns in Miami, Oklahoma for pets, specifically one dog named Boomer.

Boomer has been the talk of the town. He gained his popularity on Facebook, where disturbed Miami residents posted their worry for the dog’s wellbeing. Joe Honeycutt grew up in Miami, although he no longer lives there, he is still active in the community and decided to take action online.

“Well I had been reading several posts that day that were related to the same dog, said Honeycutt. “I wanted to get to the bottom of what was going on and see if there was anyway that I could help influence the situation.”

Honeycutt says he used Facebook to reach Boomer’s owner,

“I decided to go on the public website and make a post to the gentleman himself. I had told him there is such an importance to leaving your animals inside,” Honeycutt said.

This outrage from the community online is what caused police to get more involved. Miami police chief Thomas Anderson says they had a meeting with city officials after the dog’s rise online.

“The city manager after receiving numerous complaints wanted to make sure the situation was controlled within the law to make sure this animal’s taken care of,” said Anderson.

Anderson says they’ve known about this issue since November of last year. Boomer’s actually gotten a lot better since then, and according to Anderson gained 40 pounds. He says animal control is involved, which helped.

“He’s taking way better care of the animal than he was just a few months ago,” Anderson said. “And that’s because animal control has been working with him for the benefit of the animal.”

Anderson clarifies that he’s glad the community is looking out for these animals, but they know boomer is doing better.

“If you see an animal that is out let us check on them, but we know this dog has everything he needs to have,” said Anderson.

Anderson says animal control is keeping close tabs on boomer.
