Stabbing near Galena, Kan.; Two arrested on Attempted Murder

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Kan. — Around 6:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 8, 2022, Cherokee County authorities were notified that a woman had arrived at a Joplin, Mo. hospital suffering multiple stab wounds.

Detectives determined the crime had occurred at a property north of Galena, Kan. As a result of the investigation, deputies located and took two suspects into custody:

  • Steven D. Tyner, 49, of Columbus, Kan.
  • Ivy Christine Simpson, 23, of Webb City, Mo.

Tyner, who is a registered violent offender after being convicted of Attempted Voluntary Manslaughter in 2007, was transported to the Cherokee County Jail.

  • Attempted Murder
  • Rape
  • Possessing Methamphetamine
  • Violating the Kansas Offender Registration Act

Simpson was transported to the Cherokee County Jail.

The victim has since been released from the hospital.

News To Know: fires in the Four-States, law enforcement

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Kan. –The Kansas Highway Patrol says one pedestrian was killed after a driverless tractor struck a truck and a pedestrian. According to the crash report, the incident occurred off of Northwest Liberty Road in Cherokee County at around 11:00 A.M. on October 22. Click here to read more about this story.

JASPER COUNTY, Mo.  —About 4 p.m. Saturday reports of a fast-moving grassfire near CR300 and Juniper Road north of Carl Junction. This is the second large fire of the day for Carl Junction Fire Protection District. About 1 p.m. Carl Junction battled an hours-long grassfire to the NE of MO-96 and MO-171. FOUR STATES  — Red flag warnings and burn bans persist in the area. Local fire departments urge citizens to not burn anything outdoors till they are lifted. They also say that if you feel that their is any risk of a fire, call your local fire department.

PARSONS, Kan. – The city of Parsons steps up its nighttime law enforcement presence. The comes in the wake of an increase of calls about suspicious activities at night. The Parsons Police Department wants to be proactive and work together with residents. They encourage the community to communicate with the police department and call about any suspicious activity they might see. The police department says lights and cameras can also be a big help when dealing with criminals at night.

Fugitives from Justice, two from the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Most Wanted


CHEROKEE COUNTY, Kan.
— Sheriff David Groves shares two priority ‘Fugitive Friday’ individuals on October 7, 2022. They are wanted on their outstanding warrants.

Two individuals, Cole David Eden and Felicia Ann McGinnis, are wanted on separate and unrelated charges.

They are seeking the location of these individuals listed among the Cherokee County Kansas Sheriff’s office Most Wanted. 180 arrests have been made from tips off of the Most Wanted listing since January 20, 2010.

Joplin man sentenced nearly 14 years in Kansas DOC

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Kan. — Cherokee County District Court handed down a nearly 14 year prison sentence to a Joplin, Missouri man on Friday morning.

Michael Wayne Martsolf, age 34, was sentenced to 165 months of incarceration in the Kansas Department of Corrections after having pled guilty in August of this year.

Martsolf pleaded guilty to a May 2021 Aggravated Escape from Custody as well as pleading guilty to violating his probation on a 2017 criminal case of Distributing Controlled Substances and Fleeing Law Enforcement.

Martsolf was prosecuted by the Cherokee County Attorney’s Office.

Train and car collide north of Columbus, Kan.

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Kan. — About 6 a.m. Friday reports of a BNSF train approaching the Columbus, Kan. rail yard has collided with a passenger car.

Sheriff David Groves of Cherokee County states in a media release, “Deputies and other emergency personnel are on scene of a non-injury crash involving a train north of Columbus on Kansas Highway 7 near Bethlehem Road.”

The train was traveling southbound, traveling much slower than normal, as it was approaching Columbus, Kan.

This train is large, a little over 10,000 feet in length.

The investigation continues however preliminary information says the car was traveling southbound. The car drove off the roadway and got stuck on the tracks, the driver exited the car before the train struck the car.

The roadway was reopened to all traffic just before before 8 a.m.

We will update with more information as it becomes available.

KDOT officials and others are traveling to the crossing to conduct an investigation. There could be short delays at the crossing today.

Riverton man pleads guilty, 8 years DOC

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Kan. — A Riverton, Kan. man has plead guilty to various Cherokee County crimes now resulting in a prison term.

Adam C. Evans, age 37, was sentenced to 104 months imprisonment.

“The roughly eight and a half year prison sentence stems from numerous cases investigated by Cherokee County Sheriff’s Deputies, going back to 2018,” according to Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves.

Evans pled guilty in the following instances:

  • August 2018 Burglary of a rural Cherokee County home where numerous firearms were stolen.
  • Spring 2021 case where he barricaded himself in a local business when deputies attempted to arrest him on an outstanding warrant and he was found to be in possession of methamphetamine.
  • August 2021 incident where Evans fled into a wooded area, striking a Law Enforcement K9 with a branch when Deputies again attempted to arrest him on additional outstanding warrants for his arrest.

The formal charges Evans pled guilty to are:

  • Inflicting Harm to a Law Enforcement K9
  • Burglary
  • Possessing Methamphetamine
  • Interference with Law Enforcement.

Evans has been held in the Cherokee County Jail since his arrest in August 2021.

Groves says Evans caused a lot of issues for area residents for some time. “I’m glad he is now scheduled to be transported to the Kansas Department of Corrections and am also glad to report the Law Enforcement K9 he attacked has recovered from the incident and has since done a great job of locating and removing dangerous drugs from our community.”

The cases were prosecuted by the Cherokee County Attorney’s Office.

Pickup overturns in serious crash in Galena, Kan.

GALENA, Kan. — Tuesday afternoon Cherokee County Emergency Dispatch were alerted to reports of a serious crash on the west side of Galena near 7th and Schermerhorn.

Galena Fire Dept, Galena Police and EMS were dispatched.

On scene Galena Police tell us it was a single vehicle crash, a pickup, one occupant, the driver.

GOOGLE MAPS OF CRASH LOCATION, JUST WEST OF 7TH AND SCHERMERHORN, WEST SIDE OF GALENA, KAN. ACROSS FROM CELLTRON. 

Officers say the pickup was traveling eastbound on 7th, crossed all lanes of oncoming traffic, then went off-road and struck two culverts, overturning.

The driver was transported to Freeman West in Joplin with unknown injuries.

McCarley’s Towing of Pittsburg, Kan. were summoned to remove the crash and large amount of debris from the overturned pickup.
