Texas woman dies after canoe accident on Elk River

MCDONALD COUNTY, Mo. – A Texas resident dies after a canoe accident on the Elk River.

The incident happened on July 27, 2021, about three miles north of Noel, Missouri.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a canoe hit a tree in the Elk River and capsized.

The victim, 46-year-old Maria Lilibeth A. Reyes, got trapped underwater between the vessel and the tree.

The victim died later that day at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin, Mo. She was from San Antonia, Texas.

This is MSHP Troop D’s 5th boating fatality for 2021. Troop D serves the following southwest Missouri counties: Barry, Barton, Cedar, Christian, Dade, Dallas, Greene, Hickory, Jasper, Lawrence, McDonald, Newton, Polk, St. Clair, Stone, Taney, Vernon, and Webster.
