KOAM More Power project continues, explained by our General Manager

NOTE: Currently KOAM is now operating on a temporary low-power antenna.  We will tell you when to rescan your channels at our new higher power in early July.

KOAM TV-7 & FOX-14 – Since early this spring KOAM has been transitioning to a new antenna and tower and taking down our original tower that dates back to 1953 – when KOAM signed on. During construction in 1953, folks from the area lined their cars up along Highway 69 to watch. Of course, there were some pretty incredible sights, including crew members hanging on while being lifted to the top. You can check out the video, which includes footage filmed in color that’s never been released before here.

Tower crews in 1953 put a lot of work into building the 4-state area’s first television tower. It carried the signal for KOAM until 1961 when the 1,000-foot tower was built. It then stood as a standby antenna until 2003 when FOX14 fired up.

Recently our KOAM General Manager Brook Arnold sat down with anchor Tawnya Bach to talk about the More Power project.  She also addressed details about the transition process and what a viewer will need to make sure they receive a clean KOAM signal when the time comes.

As of Monday, June 20, KOAM is broadcasting on a temporary low-power antenna.  When the transition is finished in a few weeks we will tell you when to rescan your tv channels.  Since our power increase will be 10X what it was before?  Areas of SE Kansas, Joplin, Carthage, Neosho and NE Oklahoma will be able to get our signal over the air.
