Recovery efforts underway after deadly tornado outbreak

MAYFIELD, Ky. — Search and rescue efforts are underway in several states after a deadly outbreak of tornadoes Friday night.

The Governor of Kentucky says at least 50 people were killed.

Eight people are confirmed dead at a Kentucky candle factory that was destroyed and eight others are still missing.

Kentucky is now in an immediate federal state of emergency.

300 National Guard members are activated and searching through rubble for survivors.

Illinois authorities are using the word “catastrophic” to describe the destruction at the Amazon Warehouse in Edwardsville.

Six amazon employees died when the facility collapsed after an EF3 tornado tore through the distribution center.

Authorities have given up hope of finding more survivors in the rubble and have shifted to recovery efforts.

Amazon made a $1 million donation to the “Edwardsville Community Foundation” to help the area get back on its feet.

Sunday morning Missouri Governor Mike Parson visited St. Charles to get a first hand look at the destruction.

Friday night’s deadly tornado tore through a three mile stretch leveling homes and flipping vehicles.

This morning President Biden spoke to the Governor’s of the five states that were impacted by Friday’s deadly tornadoes vowing to help in any way.

Tornadoes tear through several states

More than 70 people are feared dead after more than 22 tornadoes tore through five states.

Kentucky was hit the hardest Friday night.

The Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear says a large tornado may have killed at least 70 people.

The Governor says the damage spans for more than 200 miles hitting ten or more counties in the state.

Saturday the Governor declared a state of emergency in multiple western Kentucky counties.

Search and rescue teams spent the day combing through rubble looking for survivors.

In Illinois at least six people were killed at an Amazon Delivery Facility Friday night.

The facility collapsed after a suspected tornado hit the building trapping multiple people inside.

Authorities spent the day searching the debris for survivors.

Crews are still working to get a count of how many people were inside the warehouse before it collapsed.

In Arkansas two people were killed from last night’s tornadoes.

One tornado hit the “Monette Manor Nursing Home” killing one and trapping 20 people inside the collapsed building.

Tornadoes moved through St. Louis killing at least two people.

In rural Saint Charles County one person died and two were injured when buildings collapsed.

Today the National Weather Service sent teams to survey damage in St. Louis and Saint Charles county.

Sunday Governor Mike Parson’s will tour the storm damage.

In Tennessee three storm related deaths were reported.

The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency has activated a level three state of emergency.

Downed trees and power lines were reported in several counties.

Amazon warehouse opens for business in Republic, Missouri

REPUBLIC, Mo. – Hundreds of workers are now clocking in at Amazon’s newest distribution warehouse in southwestern Missouri.

The Springfield News-Leader reports that the 1.3 million square-foot fulfillment center opened for business Monday in Republic. According to Amazon, the facility in Republic employs more than 200 people with a starting salary of $15.50 an hour.

Amazon is the world’s largest online retailer and already operates more than 110 fulfillment centers across North America. Amazon says in a release that the warehouse in Republic packs and ships big items like patio furniture, outdoor equipment and rugs.

Demand for warehouse employees growing in Joplin

SOUTHWEST MISSOURI — A growing demand for skilled warehouse workers in Southwest Missouri is leading to some unique opportunities.

Zechariah Coulston is optimistic about his chance at a new job.

Zechariah Coulston, Worker, said, “It’s definitely a great opportunity.”

He’s part of a 40 hour training session focusing on skills needed in a warehouse.

“I signed up for this to advance myself in the workplace environment. This is a great opportunity to get a forklift cert and also other cert that stick out to employers.”

The ATTC is hosting a series of free training sessions, a project underwritten by a $100,000 grant to fill a growing demand.

Pam Regan, One Stop Operator, Mo Job Centers, said, “We have a ton of employers looking or 42 individuals with these exact same skills.”

Familiar warehouse names like Amazon, Casey’s, and Don’s Cold Storage. They have more openings than qualified people applying for the job.

“These people will definitely be in demand.”

And these students are not just benefitting from the free training – they’ll also be the focus of a reverse job fair.

“All of these individuals that were in the classroom will be put on our website sectorready.org and those employers that are seeking warehouse positions, will be given access to those individuals.”

Making that important first connection.

“We hoping that each of the individuals will get several companies that are wanting to interview with them.”
