Santa visits children in hospital; parents say Christmas cheer is welcome
Santa and his elves spread Christmas joy in abundance Monday to children spending Christmas at Freeman Hospital West. The elves visited infants in the neonatal intensive care unit, then went to the pediatric unit. They passed along messages about requests to Santa, who made his appearance Monday afternoon.
New fire stations being readied for opening
After 2 1/2 years in temporary quarters as a result of the 2011 Joplin tornado, firefighter crews are moving into newly built replacement stations ahead of schedule. Firefighters last week began preparing a new Station No. 2 at 2825 W. Junge Blvd. for occupancy. It replaces a station at 2216 S. Maiden Lane that was destroyed in the tornado.
Grant awarded to help protect part of Carthage battlefield
A Civil War battlefield described as the place where “the first serious conflict between the United States troops and the rebels” took place just got a six-figure preservation boost. The National Park Service on Monday announced a grant of $105,075 awarded to the Jasper County Commission for an easement that will help protect 180 acres that are part of the 1861 battlefield.

Utility crews continue to reconnect customers in wake of area ice storm
Joplin-area power outages, which had peaked at nearly 5,000 customers on Saturday, had been reduced to about 260 customers Monday morning, according to Empire District Electric Co. Julie Maus, spokeswoman for Empire, said customers should not be surprised if additional outages occur over the next few days as the ice melts.
Neosho American Legion post sues city
The Clyde R. Burdick Post of the American Legion in Neosho has filed a lawsuit against the city in Newton County Circuit Court, alleging that the city has failed to transfer ownership of a city building to the post as agreed. Also named as defendants are Mayor Richard Davidson, City Clerk Nora Houdyshell and City Manager Troy Royer. The suit was filed Thursday.
Ex-housing director draws probation for embezzling from tribe
The former executive director of the Seneca-Cayuga Housing Authority in Grove has been sentenced to five years of probation for embezzling tribal funds. Lana Misshell Line, 45, of Wyandotte, also was ordered by U.S. District Judge James Payne to pay $51,181 in restitution. The sentencing hearing was conducted Friday.
