MHP reports reduction of traffic deaths

Colonel Ron Replogle, superintendent of the Missouri State Highway Patrol, is pleased to announce Missouri has experienced a strong reduction in traffic fatalities since 2005.

No traffic fatalities over holiday

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that there were zero fatalities during the New Year’s holiday counting period from 6 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013 to 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014.

City seeks input from residents on baseball stadium proposal

Joplin residents will have an opportunity to comment on a proposal that the city spend $4 million to renovate Joe Becker Stadium for use by an independent baseball team. A public hearing is scheduled during a meeting of the Joplin City Council at 6 p.m. Monday on the fifth floor of City Hall, 602 S. Main St.

Suspect in 1984 murder pleads innocent

Paul A. Moses entered a plea of not guilty Thursday in the 1984 murder of a 62-year-old Joplin widow named Frances Ramsey. Moses, 65, who recently was extradited to Missouri from California, entered the plea on a charge of first-degree murder during a video arraignment in Jasper County Circuit Court.

Experts offer advice for protecting pets from cold, snow

With more snow and single-digit temperatures in the forecast, local veterinarians and animal shelters are urging pet owners to protect their furry little friends from the elements. “People need to be really, really aware of how cold it actually is,” said Glenda Erwin, director of the Carthage Humane Society.

Open house scheduled at new Jasper County Sheriff’s new space

Jasper County sheriff’s officers who have been in a renovated building for a month will show off their new space to the public in an open house on Tuesday. The open house will follow a 10 a.m. ribbon-cutting for sheriff’s offices in a county-owned former bank building just northwest of the courthouse.

Pursuit ends in crash with patrol cars

A woman who led police on a pursuit Wednesday night through Joplin, culminating in crashes with a retaining wall and two patrol cars, has been charged with driving while intoxicated and could be facing other charges.

Library hours cut in Neosho, Seneca

Neosho-Newton County Library Director Ginny Ray on Thursday said hours have been cut in Neosho and Seneca because of a $25,363 spending cut in the budget.
