Roads and bridges in Ottawa County have been damaged and closed due to flooding

OTTAWA COUNTY, OK – Continuous rainfall has caused major flooding in parts of Ottawa County.

Officials say five roads are now closed, and three bridges haven been shut down.

Flood waters have washed away the sides of “East 120 Road Bridge” and buckled the pavement.

The bridge was installed only last year, after a previous one was damaged by flooding.

Flooded roads and other damages are primarily north of Highway-60

“Turn around, don’t drown. Do not trust water on the roadway even if you think you can see the road. Understand this water has got so much velocity right now. The ground is so saturated. It is literally washing out underneath tires as you sit on some of these roads.” Says Steven Chasteen County Commissioner for District 2.

Engineers will check the “East 120 Road Bridge” once the water recedes.

Miami, OK purchased 12 properties and repaired tornado sirens

MIAMI, OK – The city of Miami will soon acquire 9 homes and 3 businesses.

Tonight the Miami City Council approved purchasing 12 structures that are sitting in a floodplain.

This purchase is part of a FEMA grant to demolish structures that are unlivable.

“We had several of them that were red tagged meaning they could not be cleaned up or fixed up and have people moved back into them.” Says Kristi McClain, Director of Community Development.

Miami started assessing flood prone properties after flooding in May 2019.

The city then approached FEMA about a grant to demolish properties in flood zones.

“Once we found out we were getting the funding for the acquisition and the demolition we contacted those owners and let them know we would contact them in the future to come in and talk about the acquisition process.” Says McClain.

The process will cost more than $750,000. 75% of that money is coming from the federal government and 25% is coming from the city.

If property owners decide not to sell, the city would give the money back to the federal government.

“We’ll send that paperwork back to FEMA, then we’ll start the process on our end of meeting one on one with these property owners and making the offer that we’ve been able to get from FEMA, negotiating all of that.” Says McClain.

Miami will start acquiring the 12 properties in the next few months.

The properties are located between the NEO campus and Steve Owens Boulevard.

They cannot release the specific addresses until everything is signed and agreements are reached.

Tonight the city also received a reimbursement from FEMA for tornado siren repairs.

two of the city’s 19 tornado sirens were damaged after the 2019 tornado and flooding.

“We were just finally able to get those repaired and we started working on that before our spring season to make sure the city was safe and our outdoor system was working.” Says Thomas Anderson, City Emergency Manager.

The city recently repaired their outdoor tornado sirens.

The city received more than $4,300 from FEMA to cover the repair.

A new shelter is currently in the works by the Praying Hands in Webb City

WEBB CITY, MO – A new shelter is in the works at a Webb City park.

Crews are building a new pavilion on the south side of the Praying Hands Statue.

The project is the third shelter for the park, and is part of a series of improvements designed to enhance city recreation facilities in Webb City.

“The city council has really focused the last many years on upping our parks, not just King Jack Park but all of our parks – you know, improving our parks system.” Says Carl Francis, WC City Admin.

Recent wet weather has slowed progress on construction.

But crews say it won’t take long to finish the new pavilion once the site dries out.

New Jersey College student makes Rubik's Cube portraits

NEW JERSEY – In tonight’s dose of good news… What started as a challenge to solve a Rubik’s Cube soon turned into a way to use the, to create unique works of art.

And along the way, capture the attention of some high profile athletes.

For Rutgers University student Dylan Sadiq, his work with Rubik’s Cubes started with a challenge from his older brother.

“We got this cube and he was like I bet you can’t solve this Rubik’s cube. I’ll give you a week to do it, if you do it I’ll buy you a video game.” Says Sadiq.

11-years later, after watching a video of people using the cubes to create works of art, Sadiq decided to use the cubes to create a portrait of his favorite basketball player.

“I’ve only been watching basketball for like two years and Luka was one of the first players I’d ever seen. Going up against Lebron. Luka versus Lebron, battling against the goat and it was really inspiring.” Says Sadiq.

Sadiq created a frame, bought hundreds of cubes, and created a masterpiece. And Luka’s team noticed.

“The Dallas Mavs commented on my old video. ‘So, I was like, oh wow, that’s pretty cool right?’ And then it started gaining traction after that.” Says Sadiq.

40 teams from the NBA, NFL, NHL, and the Premiere League have reached out on social media asking him to create their logos or players like the Giants Saquon Barkley.

“This obviously is my favorite one here, that you’ve done all-time.” Says Sadiq.

But his larger-than-life portraits take a lot longer than what you see in the time-lapse videos he shares on social media.

Each one is made up of 560 cubes… weighs almost 200 pounds… and takes about 4 hours to create.

“So I have a long cue waiting and I’m working every single day.” Says Sadiq.

The College Cuber, as he’s known on social media, started just because he loved making portraits of some of his favorite athletes… but teams have been cutting to the front of the line by hooking him up with some swag. The Knicks sent him a jersey signed by Julius Randle.

“Just seeing the jersey, you open the box, it’s just a jersey first, I’m like ‘Wow, this is crazy.’ But then it’s signed, has an authenticity card, it’s really insane.” Says Sadiq.

The Detroit Pistons recently became the first team to pay for his artwork… and while he’d love to sell more… it’s not his top priority.

“I want to get a piece in every single stadium, that’s my goal.” Says Sadiq.

The craziest part about each portrait might be that it only stays up for a few minutes once it’s finished.
You see the cost of cubes adds up quick, so he reuses his media for each portrait.

Fortunately, the image is a lot easier to take down than the real Saquon Barkley.

The non-profit, Life360 Community Service, will soon take over a former Southwest Missouri hospital

MONETT, MO – A former Southwest Missouri hospital will soon be in the hands of a non-profit.

Life360 Community Services, a non-profit out of Springfield, will soon be taking over the former Cox Health Hospital in Monett.

Here, they’ll have facilities for mental health, foster care, crisis pregnancy and more.

“The resources they have, behind, to make this project successful really made us feel good about the whole project and that it would come to fruition.” Says Darren Bass, President of Cox Monett Hospital.

The non-profit has 4 initiatives: To house, empower, educate, and feed.

In fact, Life360 Community Service Executive Vice President, Jeremy Hahn, says the building will better help them feed over 25,000 kids in Southern Missouri.

“Here in the Cox Monett building, we would move some of those food processing, food packing programs into the building and then be served into the local school systems.” Says Hahn.

Hahn adds, while they’re excited to better the community, they’re even more excited for the support.

“We want to bring together those non-profits, those leaders in the community who are already doing great things to one roof. And, almost create a one-stop shop for residents who might need a service, or multiple services.” Says Hahn.

And Bass couldn’t agree more.

“To continue to be able to serve the community for those people that may not have the resources to manage a lot of the problems that they’re facing, and to really have a one-stop shop come in here and either free, or at a affordable cost be able to get the services they need, it just made us feel very good.” Says Bass.

Bass adds that Life360 will completely take over the property on August 13th.

A local animal shelter is helping families keep their pets safe.

JOPLIN, Mo. — A local animal shelter is helping families keep their pets safe.

Sunday afternoon the Joplin Humane Society held a low cost vaccination clinic.

They offered Bordetella, distemper and rabies shots for pets along with microchipping for $10.

They were also testing pets for heartworm, feline FIV, and flea and ticks.

Lex Evelhaoch, Volunteer Coordinator, says, “If your pet doesn’t keep up on their vaccinations they are able to get that distemper, they are able to pick up Bordetella. Any type of daycare or if you take your dog to the dog park if they’re not vaccinated for Bordetella its a lot easier for them to pick that up.”

They will host another low cost vaccination clinic in September.
