MSSU Zumbathon to benefit scholarship; annual assistance goes to cancer-affected students

There was a time once when Charlotte Hopper’s life was dictated by pain, diagnoses and treatments. But not now. Hopper, a technical writer for Leggett & Platt Inc. and an English instructor at Missouri Southern State University, will participate today in the second MSSU Zumbathon, which is a fundraising event for the Charlotte Olinger Hopper Scholarship.

Carthage holds groundbreaking for new early childhood center

Carthage School District officials and supporters gathered Thursday for a ceremonial groundbreaking for a new early childhood center to be constructed on Fairview Avenue. The building will combine early childhood service education, early childhood special services and the Parents as Teachers program, which currently are scattered in different parts of the district.

Webb City official: Future looks bright

In a “state of the city address” on Thursday, interim City Administrator Carl Francis said Webb City residents have a lot to look forward to in the coming years. “On the economic standpoint, we have a lot of big things coming,” he said during a Webb City Chamber of Commerce luncheon. “We have some developments that will be very beneficial to the city of Webb City.”

Joplin Redevelopment Corp. says work on senior living complex, library on track

Members of the Joplin Redevelopment Corp., which is handling land transactions for Joplin’s master developer projects, said they believe the efforts for redevelopment have turned a corner that will make the projects more visible to the public. The JRC on Tuesday approved the final amendments to site development agreements separating a senior transitional living project to be built west of 26th Street and McClelland Boulevard.

Restaurant owners join list of smoke-free establishments

A few years ago, Joplin restaurant owner Mike Pawlus was on the fence. “We wanted to go to no-smoking, but wanted the city to make the call,” said Pawlus, referring to an issue before the Joplin City Council in 2010. The ban ultimately did not fly. Likewise, the Webb City council rejected a similar effort at about the same time, as did the Carthage council.
