Wilma Lee Douffet

Wilma Lee (Messer) Douffet, age 90 passed away at 7:16 pm, Monday, November 21, 2022 at Quaker Hill Manor, Lowell, KS.

Wilma was born November 2, 1932 in Cherokee County, Kansas. Her parents were James and Leatha (Riley) Messer. She had returned to Galena in 1991 after living several years in Donaldsonville. LA.

She graduated from Galena High School with the class of 1951. While in Louisiana, she worked as an administrative assistant for an insurance company. She was an active member of St Mary’s Episcopal Church in Galena and a lifetime member of the Galena Mining and Historical Museum. She had also been a member of the Galena Library Board. She enjoyed volunteering for SEK-CAP and spent countless hours working with her husband at the museum where she had served as Secretary.

Wilma was married to Joseph M Douffet on November 10, 1951 in Columbus, KS. He preceded her in death July 21, 2015.

Surviving are her sisters-in-law Shirley Messer, Colleen Ray, Loretta Grube, Jeanie Nash, Becky Schurman, brother-in-law Denny Douffet, and several nieces and nephews, including one niece, Faith Holt (Gary), Galena, who served as Wilma’s caregiver.

Also preceding her in death were her brothers Joe Smittle, Eugene Smittle, Calvin Smittle, Aurthur Smittle, William Messer, Jerry Messer, and Earl Dean Messer; and sisters Ada Carlisle, (infant) Birdie Messer.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM December 11, 2022 at St Mary’s Episcopal Church, Galena, KS with burial of ashes at Lowell Cemetery, Lowell, KS.
