News To Know: second-degree murder, Cyber Monday

COFFEYVILLE, Kan. – A judge sentences a Coffeyville, Kansas man for second-degree murder. Donald Collins gets 18 years in prison for the death of 50-year-old Nina Lee of Coffeyville back in February 2020. That’s when Lee was found dead at a Parsons Kansas motel. Authorities were called there for a report of a potential overdose, but an autopsy indicated there was foul play.

ONLINE – Cyber Monday is here. It is always good to watch for red flags when shopping online. The better business bureau wants to remind people to stay safe and avoid getting scammed while shopping online. Since the covid pandemic started, more and more people are shopping online. Pamela Hernandez, regional director for the Better Business Bureau says, a recent study found online shopping fraud is up 87 percent, and about 36 % of online shopping fraud based on what customers have told them originates from fake websites. She advises people to look for any red flags before purchasing so their information doesn’t get in the wrong hands.

FRONTENAC, Kan. – The city of Frontenac celebrated the beginning of the holiday season with a Christmas light ceremony. The city lit up downtown Frontenac with a special ceremony. Citizens were able to listen to the elementary, junior high, and high school choirs as they lit up the downtown lights. Following the choir and Frontenac raider band’s performance, citizens were able to meet Santa Claus himself, with Mrs. Claus. Residents were also offered hot cocoa and cookies. Seth Nutt, the Frontenac Library director, says it takes a couple of months to plan the yearly event.

PITTSBURG, Kan. – And the Pittsburg Wrestling Club is raising funds as the sport is booming in the city. The non-profit launched the fundraiser for the high school and youth wrestling club. This year the club is selling popcorn online for Christmas. The president of the club says the fundraiser is a way for the club to raise money to take care of the athletes.
