Larry C. Platt, age 82, Joplin, passed away on Tuesday, November 22, 2022 at St. Luke’s Nursing Center.
Larry was born February 4, 1940 in Havana, Illinois, son of the late Clarence Platt and Mary (Sears) Platt. He grew up in Illinois and Iowa where he attended school before moving to Joplin in 1958 where he attended Ozark Bible College while being part of the Evangalairs Quartet. He moved to Waverly, IA where he began his career in the newspaper business. He worked for Waverly, IA paper, then Ft. Madison, IA paper, before moving to Decatur, IL, and finally working for the Houston Chronicle in Houston, Texas. After retirement he moved to Joplin to be closer to his wife’s hometown, and for a simpler life. He was passionate about photography, and loved spending time with his family, especially his wife and grandchildren. He was very involved with church activities, and was a volunteer with the We Care of the Four States food pantry. One of his favorite activities was teaching Sunday school classes, particularly children. He was also a fill in pastor for several churches over the years which he enjoyed very much.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Dorothy (Lee) Platt; sons, Randy Platt (Kim) of Decatur, IL, Steven Platt of Joplin, and David Platt (Dawn Nolt) of Portland, OR; grandchildren, Jonathan Platt (Aimee) of Carl Junction, Rachel Newberry (Mike) of Columbus, KS, Joshua Platt (Michelle) of Webb City, Mae Platt of Portland, OR; great-grandchildren, Emilia Platt and Peyton Newberry; sisters, Sondra Martin of Atlanta, GA, Brenda Johnson (Steve) of Waverly, IA; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be Tuesday, November 29, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. in Parker Mortuary Chapel with Pastor Gene Bebee and Pastor Adam Jones officiating. Interment will follow in Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery with Tom Harlin, James Billings, Ralph Shed, Gerry Pirtle, Mickel Clark, and John Barnette serving as pallbearers.
