Peggy M. Maxwell, 91, of Parsons, passed away at 3:35 p.m., Friday, November 11, 2022 at Parsons Presbyterian Manor.
Peggy Marie Blackburn was born on June 26, 1931, to Thomas “Jess” and Elsie Marie (Fox) Blackburn in McCune. As a young girl, she grew up and attended school in rural McCune, graduating from McCune Rural High School in 1949. Following high school, Peggy attended Pittsburg State University.
On December 2, 1950, Peggy and James L. “Jim” Maxwell were united in marriage at Washington Avenue Methodist Church in Parsons. After staying home with her daughters, Peggy began her working career as a keypunch operator for the Agriculture Census Bureau from 1961 to 1963. For 38 years, she was the receptionist at the Parsons Clinic, until her retirement in 2000. In her retirement, she worked part-time at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home for a number of years. Peggy and Jim lived in the McCune area until moving into Parsons, where she had lived since. Jim preceded her in death on June 13, 1997.
Peggy was a member of the McCune Methodist Church. After moving to Parsons, she attended the Parsons Faith United Methodist Church and was active in the Faith Builders group there. Volunteering was an important part of Peggy’s life. For a number of years, she had been a part of the Community Free Clinic and was a Pink Lady at Labette Health.
She enjoyed working outdoors with Mother Nature, cooking, and cleaning house. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Two daughters – Kathy Thomas and her husband, Rick, of Pryor, Oklahoma
Connie McNickle and her husband, Kenneth, of Cherryvale, Kansas
Six grandchildren – Brian Thomas; B.J. Thomas and his wife, Becky; Bre Watkins; Debra McNickle; Paul McNickle and his wife, Kim; and Ken McNickle and his wife, Macey
Twelve great-grandchildren – Caela Foster, Dustin McNickle, Dalton McNickle, Shanler McNickle, Olivia Watkins, Zeke Watkins, Ethan Watkins, Aspen Foster, Faith Foster, Abigail Thomas, Emmerson Thomas, and Kinsley Thomas
Two great-great-grandchildren – Quinton Jay and Kenslie Elaine
Special “sister” – Bonnie Courtney
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Maxwell; her twin sister, Patsy Woodroof; and her sister, Henrietta Wolverton.
The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 19, 2022, at the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons. Burial will follow at the McCune Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday, at the funeral home.
