A new amendment could change how Missouri uses its National Guard

JOPLIN, Mo. – A new amendment on the docket could mean big changes in how Missouri responds to major emergencies.

If passed, Amendment 5 would establish the Missouri Department of the National Guard as an administrative department within the State’s executive branch.

As of now, the MDNG belongs to the Missouri Department of public safety.

The amendment change would give Missouri’s Executive Branch more control over how the State chooses to deploy the reserved troops.

To learn more about the amendment, KOAM’s Segun Bamidele spoke with Missouri State Senator Bill White.

“The Amendment would give the executive branch the ability to exercise direct control of the National Guard, which is what it’s supposed to be right now,” White said.
