Elva June Sharp

Elva June (Estes) Sharp passed away peacefully on October 19, 2022, after a brief illness. She was 89 years old and still making plans the day before she left us. Born in Dodge City, Kansas, on May 13, 1933, Elva June always considered the month of May her very own domain.

Elva June Sharp was a doted-upon daughter, a pesky sister, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and aunt; she was a friend to many and a dedicated teacher to all who entered her classrooms. Elva June Estes and Robert Eugene Sharp were married in Dodge City on April 11, 1953, and they celebrated 69 years of marriage last spring. They moved to the Monett area in 1965 and have called it home ever since.

Elva June is survived by her husband, her son Kevin Sharp and daughter-in-law Erin Riordan of Memphis, Tennessee, her daughter Susan Thomas and son-in-law Clay Thomas of Schertz, Texas, and two granddaughters, Samantha Thomas of Kansas City, Missouri and Casey Thomas of Ames, Iowa. Elva June’s granddaughters are and will always be the apples of her eyes. She also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews, who called her Aunt June, and many friends and acquaintances, who appreciated her wit and unique sparkle.

Elva June held an MA degree in Education from Missouri State University. She was an elementary school teacher for much of her professional life, working in the Purdy School system until her retirement in the mid-1990s. She had many interests and possessed a healthy curiosity about the world, she was an avid reader, a committed crossword and jigsaw puzzler, and a constant seeker of fun. Elva June will be greatly missed by many, especially her family.

A visitation for Elva June Sharp will be held at Buchanan Funeral Home (301 Euclid) in Monett at 1:00 PM, Monday, October 24, with a service to follow at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Monett Public Library or the charity of your choice. Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of Buchanan Funeral Home.
